Action Action anime usually involve a fairly straightforward story of good guys versus bad guys, where most disputes are resolved by using physical force. It often contains a lot of shooting, explosions and fighting. Airforce Anime with this category, like anime with Military as category concerns an organised armed force, but with the difference that they should primarily conduct aerial warfare.
Note: Just because the anime contains a bunch of planes or similar, unless the anime is actually about a fighting airforce, you might not want to add this genre. Fantasy Imaginative or fanciful work, especially one dealing with supernatural elements and themes. Fantasy World A fantasy world is a type of imaginary world, part of a fictional universe. Typical worlds involve, but are not limited to magic or magical abilities and a medieval theme. Some worlds may be a parallel world tenuously connected to Earth via magical portals or items; a fictional Earth set in the remote past or future; or an entirely independent world set in another universe. Many fantasy worlds draw heavily on real world history, geography and sociology, and also on folklore. Gunfights Fights where two or more parties are firing guns at one another. Military The anime concerns an organised armed force, and its members. Said body should have both the equipment and hierarchy found in military groups, and should ideally be actively utilising their power against an opponent. Characters are either employed as professional soldiers or enlisted on a volunteer basis, for ideological reasons. Original Work: New Not based on anything, the story is a new work, usually made up by the people involved in creating the anime. Generally if an original work (原作) credit is given, it will be to the studio, or director, or other members of the production team. Plot Continuity Consistency of the characteristics of persons, plot, objects, places and events seen by the viewer.
A single linear focused plot is highly continuous.
A truly random plot is highly discontinuous. Romance Romance describes a story that deals with love between two or more characters typically also having an optimistic ending. Romance is also a difficulty encountered when creating a harem. Sci-Fi Science fiction stories usually focus on how situations could be different in the future when we are more technologically advanced; due to either our own achievements or having met with other civilizations whom we have learned from. Seinen A subset of anime or manga that is generally targeted at a 18 - 25 year old male audience, but the audience can be much older with some manga aimed at businessmen well into their 40s. Tragedy Tragedy is a form of drama characterized by seriousness and dignity, usually involving a conflict between a character and some higher power, such as the law, the gods, fate, or society.

airships no description set yet aviation "These magnificant men in their flying machines" awesome fantasy world no description set yet CG In Anime, usually hand-animation-like rendered 3D graphics. Like machines (buses, cars etc.) that are easy to hide the fact that it`s in fact computer generated. It can also be procedural water, (oceans/lakes etc) and other VFX.
Many particle-effects (water sprinkles from hair, star effects, kaleidoscopes) are also CG. Some things are virtually impossible to animate without computers in the small budgets of TV anime, namely complex mechas (examples: Basquash mechas, Tachikoma from GitS: SAC). dogfight Not the sort of ‘bark-bark’ or ‘woof-woof’ sort of dogfight.
Dogfight refers to combat engagement between aircraft (or space craft), often one on one. So in short: jets, planes, missiles, machine guns and maybe a kamikaze or two. emotionally engaging style The style in this anime "touches the heart" by using nice sunny settings, beautiful nature views, e.g. sakura trees, and the camera shots are all slightly misted, giving the scenes a level of softness. To complete the picture the story is heart-wrenching and tear-jerking. epic Epic is all about scale. Whether it is the vastness of the anime’s universe, the grandeur of the protagonist’s heroic journey, or the anime’s over-the-top, pulse-pounding visual style — when the anime becomes larger than life and draws the viewer in with an overwhelming sense of awe, it can be described simply as Epic. European stylized The anime is set in a fictional Europe. Imagine an architectural mix of London, Paris, Rome, Berlin, Prague, and other cities in the 19th century. flashback The characters remember things from their past triggering a flashback. The anime either repeats scenes from previous episodes (danger of too many "fillers"), or actually shows new footage from very old memories. funky German Someone or something speaks German in a hilarious way, e.g. the voice feedback of a magical weapon. good OP ED no description set yet great soundtrack The anime soundtrack is noteworthy. improbable physics The physics in this anime have little to do with real-world physics, and are actually very much exaggerated.
Examples: Cars hitting a tiny obstacle, but then flying through the air for no apparent reason, or flimsy bullets slamming heavy characters clear across the room. lovable loli This anime contains at least one young female character who is endeared by all who meet her, including you. You may be tempted to touch the loli, perhaps even kidnap and take home this character with you, but you can not. Only look. no facial distortion Anime frequently use funny facial distortions to project a character`s reaction. Normally anime that are funny possess this characteristic. eg: eyes become like dots when embarrassed, eyes become large white circle when surprised, large drop of sweat on the head signifies uneasiness or under tension, heads become extremely large when shouting at someone, etc. orphan One or more characters in the anime have lost their parents. philosophical no description set yet precious water Water is a rare commodity, and thus very valuable in the presented setting. sense of foreboding The anime starts off quietly, everything seems to be fine, but from episode to episode the signs that something ominous is about to happen increase. E.g. a typical mystery setting. sociocultural evolution Describes how cultures and societies develop over time, based on both cultural evolution and social evolution.
A post-apocalyptic or a Utopian setting would show very interesting changes in human behaviour, mental state, or simply daily life. steampunk The world depicted in this anime still widely uses steam power. The large amounts of wood or coal burning smoke pollution, and the affinity to metal constructs like cogs and metal tubing are also noteworthy.
If not set in Victorian times, can exemplify everything that is bad about unrestrained technological progress (dead matter), when compared to life and nature. The anime usually makes a point to propound the latter. strong female lead The lead female character has a strong personality and plays a part that is not the typical damsel-in-distress role.
This is the exact opposite of the “damsel in distress” tag. subtle CG There`s CG in this show -- but can you spot it?
I`m not lying, there`s (subtle) CG in it! Really!
In this case, CG refers to graphics made on the computer instead of hand-drawn. visually stunning The visuals — i.e. settings, backgrounds, characters — are absolutely breathtakingly beautiful.
This may come as all the more surprising, when a TV series or OVA sports the quality usually only associated with expensive anime movies. war setting An armed conflict is the main theme or plays a large role in this anime.
