The story, which occurs in Chiba Prefecture and Maihama, follows a highschool boy who participates in extracurricular activities (swimming) and suddenly finds out that he is able to see things that others cannot. Not long after that, he suddenly gets drawn into the middle of a battle between giant robots, where he ends up piloting one of them.
But the question is... is any of it real?

Action Action anime usually involve a fairly straightforward story of good guys versus bad guys, where most disputes are resolved by using physical force. It often contains a lot of shooting, explosions and fighting. Aliens An extraterrestrial life-form, possibly intelligent and/or extremely threatening. Aliens come in all shapes and sizes: They may be ethereal beings as in "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within", quite humanoid as most of the female space-faring cast in "Tenchi Muyou! GXP", or totally incomprehensible as in "Gantz". Not the sky is the limit, but the anime author`s imagination. Angst A feeling of general discomfort and uneasiness is present due to either trivial or more serious reasons, often accompanied by depression.
Warning: may contain copious amounts of brooding and sighing. Asia Asia is the world`s largest and most populous continent. Delinquents Every school has them, but not all anime with school setting make delinquents a central topic. There are several versions of these delinquents, though some are grounded on a misunderstanding:
* The student with a really bad image and attitude, based on his real criminal actions outside of the school and is even feared by teachers.
* The primitive "class bully" that pushes around ("clobbers") his classmates for no apparent reason, possibly extorting lunch money.
* The student with an sinister complexion or "evil eye", but is actually a "good" student (unfoundedly feared character).
* The rebellious student, who does not care for studying, but is otherwise docile. Called a "delinquent" as a joke. Earth That big mud ball that most of us live on. High School The upper-secondary education (not compulsory in Japan) covers the grades ten, eleven, and twelve. The students are typically fifteen to eighteen years old.
Anime centre on High School settings predominately: Plot/story-wise the coming of age is of interest - the students are almost adults (their bodies have matured, see ecchi anime) with more earnest, real-life problems. Japan Last stronghold for humanity, if Tokyo falls, it`s all over. Tokyo tower will undoubtedly fall anyway. Mecha Mecha in Japanese basically means mechanical things; everything from an electric whisk or a car to a spaceship or a robot. Here however we limit it to the more exotic things usually referred to as mecha anime: robots, whether controlled by a human or not, and their ilk. Original Work: New Not based on anything, the story is a new work, usually made up by the people involved in creating the anime. Generally if an original work (原作) credit is given, it will be to the studio, or director, or other members of the production team. Piloted Robots Piloted Robots are, as the name suggests, robots that cannot control themselves; they need to be steered from somewhere, this can be from a human sitting inside or a remote controlled option. Plot Continuity Consistency of the characteristics of persons, plot, objects, places and events seen by the viewer.
A single linear focused plot is highly continuous.
A truly random plot is highly discontinuous. Post-apocalyptic An anime that takes place on future Earth (or it could be an alternative universe) after a major cataclysm has occurred. World War III, an alien invasion, plague, global warming or some other general disaster are common themes to build a post-apocalyptic world upon, where the effects were severe enough that mankind barely survived. Romance Romance describes a story that deals with love between two or more characters typically also having an optimistic ending. Romance is also a difficulty encountered when creating a harem. School Life Since a large part of the anime audience still takes part in school life or is visiting college, it is only natural to choose a setting the audience can identify with, be it elementary, middle, or high school. For the older viewers a college setting with more mature real-life problems is appropriate. And since clubs take up so much time in the lives of students, these are obviously also important. SciFi Science fiction stories usually focus on how situations could be different in the future when we are more technologically advanced; due to either our own achievements or having met with other civilizations whom we have learned from. Shounen A style of anime and manga intended for boys, characterized by high-action, often humorous plots featuring male protagonists. The camaraderie between boys or men on sports teams, fighting squads, etc. is often emphasized. Unrealistically attractive female characters are also common (see fanservice), but are not a requirement. The art style of shounen also tends to be less flowery than that of shoujo. Space The final frontier. Stereotypes Then there is the question of the character set presentation. Is it completely original, or is it your usual stereotypical character cast. Both choices have their merit, for example it would not really make much sense to reinvent the wheel for a harem anime. Fans of that genre come to expect their favourite stereotype protagonists. Time: Future Anime that fall under the future category are the ones that have a society that could have originated from ours. In most cases it should go hand to hand with sci-fi since we expect the future to consist of advanced technology, however, in the case where it`s explicitly stated in the story that the anime takes place "x years into the future", the state of technology doesn`t matter as long as it`s long into the future. The anime can be set in an alternative universe not tied with our own, as long as it has a futuristic feel to it.
This category sports quite a lot of anime, mostly stemming from SciFi, but not necessarily only from there. Tragedy Tragedy is a form of drama characterized by seriousness and dignity, usually involving a conflict between a character and some higher power, such as the law, the gods, fate, or society. Virtual Reality A virtual reality is a place where the character interacts with a computer (or some other device)-simulated environment, be it real or imagined. The condition for a virtual reality to exist is the existence of real world for the character. In some cases, a virtual reality where characters can get harmed physically is depicted.

amnesia Loss of memory.
Used as story element, gradually revealing a protagonist`s past that had been forgotten. Usually revealing a terribly gruesome happening. artificial intelligence Differing for organic based life forms and their "natural" intelligence, AI is created / programmed by artificial means.
Robots, androids, or advanced computers (think "HAL 9000") will have artificial intelligence. awesome storyline The storyline is intriguingly crafted: The suspense will keep you at the edge of your seat, the plot twists will very much surprise, the character development is both convincing, and entertaining.
This is how anime should be! CG In Anime, usually hand-animation-like rendered 3D graphics. Like machines (buses, cars etc.) that are easy to hide the fact that it`s in fact computer generated. It can also be procedural water, (oceans/lakes etc) and other VFX.
Many particle-effects (water sprinkles from hair, star effects, kaleidoscopes) are also CG. Some things are virtually impossible to animate without computers in the small budgets of TV anime, namely complex mechas (examples: Basquash mechas, Tachikoma from GitS: SAC). Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? The title of Philip K. Dick’s SF novel (movie: Blade Runner).
The phrase implies a set of existential questions: Do artificial beings (e.g. Replicants or Bioroids) dream, feel, or have a soul? If memories can be implanted, what makes real memories real? By contrast — what makes humans human? What is reality?
These are central themes e.g. in all of the Ghost in the Shell and Appleseed series / movies. dumbed down villains no description set yet existentialism Most commonly defines the rejection of a god and any transcendent will that dictates how humans should live. It rejects any "created" meaning of life and the world, stating a leap of faith is required to live an authentic life. In this existentialism, belief in a god is often considered a form of Bad Faith.
In length, the Absurd contains ideas that there is no meaning in the world beyond what meaning it`s given. Meaninglessness also encompasses amorality or "unfairness" of the world. This contrasts with "karmic" ways of thinking in which "bad things don`t happen to good people"; there is no such thing as a good person or a bad thing; what happens happens, and it may just as well happen to a good person as to a bad person. This contrasts daily experience where most things appear meaningful, and where good people receive a "reward" for goodness. fighting For some reason or other one faction has to take it out on some opponent via fight or battle. Typical examples of this are all the anime with "endless pointless fighting" tag. great directing no description set yet great OP and ED The OP (opening) and ED (ending) sequences contain a strong sense of effort toward impressively utilizing visuals, instrumentals and vocals to captivate an audience.
This has nothing to do with any karaoke effects and styling individual subbers may have added. manipulation no description set yet multiple personality At first she may want to smell the pretty flowers, but then all of a sudden, she will kick the puppy. What is the explanation for this? She has multiple personalities, all fighting for control over one body.
Male characters can have such a multiple personality just as well. nonsensical philosophy no description set yet praises status quo no description set yet protection complex A main character will be practically obsessed with the protection of one or more other characters. This desire to protect may be so strong, it could unconsciously subject and influence the character`s attitude and behavior towards situations or other people in general. The obsessive protector will feel it`s their mission in life to protect the other character, possibly viewing themselves as worthless or a failure if that single duty is to be slightly off from perfection. quantum mechanics Quantum mechanics (or physics) is a set of principles that describe the physical world (everything that is material) in terms of atoms and subatomic particles (e.g. electrons, photons, neutrons, quarks) and the relations between them. (See wikipedia for detailed info).
The story or plot used in this anime is directly related with one or more of this principles; mainly the simultaneous wave-like and particle-like behavior of all matter and radiation, or the "Heisenberg uncertainty principle" (one can never know both the location and the speed of a particle with all certainty).
Sometimes just some terms of quantum mechanics are used in the anime, like "Schrödinger`s cat" or "synchrotron radiation", to make the story more "real". real-world location Places seen in the show exist in reality. slow when it comes to love The main protagonists in this anime have a very hard time trying to express their feelings to each other. They simply will not finally confess their love.
In some cases this romance element is based on unrequited love, or an absurd amount of shyness. slow-paced The story - including its characters and events - develop slowly.
May contain a weak continuity of plot and/or character development. summer festival The summer festival is used to show off the female protagonists in traditional Japanese clothing — the yukata — a casual form of kimono.
The festivities include food stalls (cotton candy, candy apples, choco bananas, taiyaki), various games (scoop goldfishes), and a fireworks display. surprisingly good Contrary to previous speculations or in spite of reviews, some would say the anime isn`t as bad as one might have originally thought it would be. time loop A time loop is a common plot device in science fiction (especially in universes where time travel is commonplace). Events in the story repeat themselves a number of times with or without some variation with each pass. Most characters either do not realise this is occurring or are attempting to break the cycle in some way.
One well-known example of this is in the 1993 film Groundhog Day, in which the main character is the only one aware of the time loop, although time loops had appeared in many fictional works prior to that. Stories with time loops commonly center on correcting past mistakes or on getting a character to recognise some key truth; escape from the loop may then follow. transhumanism no description set yet vilifies technology no description set yet wasted potential This anime excels in some areas while being bad at some other. For example a good story is combined with poor animation or a good animation and music is combined with a bad story.
