Action Action anime usually involve a fairly straightforward story of good guys versus bad guys, where most disputes are resolved by using physical force. It often contains a lot of shooting, explosions and fighting. Alternative Present Anime that fit in the alternative present category usually have technology and society that is very similar to ours, but with differences in both, history and culture, which sometimes are blatantly obvious, but sometimes harder to place; this one can at times be very subjective. Comedy Anime whose central struggle causes hilarious results. These stories are built upon funny characters, situations and events. A comedy anime is laced with humour and sets out to provoke laughter from the audience.
Japanese humour can be a bit strange to westerners, so if you`re new to this type of humour, just bear with it; it`ll most likely grow on you if you`re a fan of other kinds of comedy. Ecchi Ecchi, or etchi (エッチ), is a common Japanese word meaning “indecent”, “lewd”, “frisky” or “sexy”, while its usage can be compared to the word “naughty”. The term is used when vague sexual content, such as skimpy clothing or nudity, is prominent. Fantasy Magic and other supernatural forms are primary elements of plot, theme and/or setting. Distinguished from science fiction and horror by not involving scientific or macabre themes respectively, though the three genres can often overlap each other to some extent. Fantasy World A fantasy world is a type of imaginary world, part of a fictional universe. Typical worlds involve, but are not limited to magic or magical abilities and a medieval theme. Some worlds may be a parallel world tenuously connected to Earth via magical portals or items; a fictional Earth set in the remote past or future; or an entirely independent world set in another universe. Many fantasy worlds draw heavily on real world history, geography and sociology, and also on folklore. Harem Harem anime is when three or more females that for some reason are in the presence of one male as a central plot element. Generally, both the girls` looks and personalities vary a lot, and most of them are interested in the one guy. Sometimes, none of the girls are really interested at first, so the protagonist has to build relationships with them. Ecchi pretty much can`t be avoided, and it`s typical to see the protagonist stamped as a pervert by some of the girls, whether he is one or not. A lot of harem anime were originally Visual Novels, since most Visual Novels revolve around controlling this one guy, trying to build a relationship with several girls.
In a story where there is one female and several good looking males it`s a "reverse harem" or "male harem". High School The upper-secondary education (not compulsory in Japan) covers the grades ten, eleven, and twelve. The students are typically fifteen to eighteen years old.
Anime centre on High School settings predominately: Plot/story-wise the coming of age is of interest - the students are almost adults (their bodies have matured, see ecchi anime) with more earnest, real-life problems. Humanoid Humanoids are aliens, intelligent beings who do not originate from Earth, but have a striking similarity to humans or at least show the basic body layout, i.e. two arms and legs, head with two eyes and ears, one nose and mouth. Though the latter - head-related features - may vary. As "DearS" shows some aliens actually exhibit super-human beauty, or as in the case of "Onegai Teacher" they are genetically compatible to humans for some strange reason. Japan Last stronghold for humanity, if Tokyo falls, it`s all over. Tokyo tower will undoubtedly fall anyway. Juujin Juujin are characters that are otherwise human, but have some animal characteristics, like animal ears and/or a tail. The most well known type is a cat girl, but there are also cat boys, dog girls/boys, fox girls/boys etc. This category should not be confused with furry fandom or with anthropomorphic character types in general, as those are animals with human characteristics.
This category isn`t restricted to ecchi and hentai shows. Nudity Nudity is the state of wearing no clothing and exposing the bare skin or intimate parts.
Especially gratuitous fanservice shows tend to show their characters frequently without any clothes, though often hiding genitals through the means of additions like steam. Plot Continuity Consistency of the characteristics of persons, plot, objects, places and events seen by the viewer.
A single linear focused plot is highly continuous.
A truly random plot is highly discontinuous. SciFi Science fiction stories usually focus on how situations could be different in the future when we are more technologically advanced; due to either our own achievements or having met with other civilizations whom we have learned from. Shipboard Beam me up, Scotty! Space stations (think Death Star) also count. Basically, this category is to tell if the setting takes place onboard a spaceship in space. This category is not applicable if the spaceship lies on a planet and never actually gets into space. Slapstick Slapstick humour is generally recognized by lots of physical abuse, horseplay and practical jokes. Also often seen are impossible situations, using sounds to illustrate impossible stunts that aren`t shown on-screen and to create tension for audience anticipation. Stereotypes Then there is the question of the character set presentation. Is it completely original, or is it your usual stereotypical character cast. Both choices have their merit, for example it would not really make much sense to reinvent the wheel for a harem anime. Fans of that genre come to expect their favourite stereotype protagonists.
