It was the year 1939 when the Neuroi appeared. Nobody knows where they came from or what their ultimate agenda is, but the fact remains that their attacks drove people out of their towns and cities. In order to take arms against them, humanity develops a new anti-Neuroi weapon called the Striker Unit. Using the power of magic to fight against the monsters, this new device enhances and amplifies the power of female magic-wielders. To use this device, young witches from all over the world have been brought together to form an elite task force unit called the 501st Joint Fighter Wing, commonly known as the Strike Witches.

Categories

Action Action anime usually involve a fairly straightforward story of good guys versus bad guys, where most disputes are resolved by using physical force. It often contains a lot of shooting, explosions and fighting. Airforce Anime with this category, like anime with Military as category concerns an organised armed force, but with the difference that they should primarily conduct aerial warfare.

Note: Just because the anime contains a bunch of planes or similar, unless the anime is actually about a fighting airforce, you might not want to add this genre. Aliens An extraterrestrial life-form, possibly intelligent and/or extremely threatening. Aliens come in all shapes and sizes: They may be ethereal beings as in "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within", quite humanoid as most of the female space-faring cast in "Tenchi Muyou! GXP", or totally incomprehensible as in "Gantz". Not the sky is the limit, but the anime author`s imagination. Alternative History An anime that takes place in an alternative past is an anime that clearly does not belong to the future or the present, and isn`t tied particularly closely to our history, or has ties to our history but only as a premise: there are too many things that don`t make sense for the time-period. In some cases there is futuristic technology present, but the overall setting still feels that of the past. However the setting must still take place on Earth, since we can not know if the history of a fantasy world is an alternate one or not. Boing The sound breasts make when they bounce. Size may vary, but mainly involves larger breasts in tight or otherwise sexy clothing. Partial or complete exposure may occur, usually emphasizing the boing-effect as they come out. Not capable of bouncing means no boing. Earth That big mud ball that most of us live on. Ecchi Ecchi, or etchi (エッチ), is a common Japanese word meaning "indecent", "lewd", "frisky" or "sexy", while its usage can be compared to the word "naughty". The term is used when vague sexual content, such as skimpy clothing or nudity, is prominent. Gunfights Fights where two or more parties are firing guns at one another. Juujin Juujin are characters that are otherwise human, but have some animal characteristics, like animal ears and/or a tail. The most well known type is a cat girl, but there are also cat boys, dog girls/boys, fox girls/boys etc. This category should not be confused with furry fandom or with anthropomorphic character types in general, as those are animals with human characteristics.

This category isn`t restricted to ecchi and hentai shows. Large Breasts Focus on larger than average breasts. Pretty common in anime. Usually involves adolescent girls or fully grown women. Lolicon Loli is a short form of the word Lolita, describing sexually precocious young girls. The related fetish for this is called Lolicon (Lolita Complex). Mecha Mecha in Japanese basically means mechanical things; everything from an electric whisk or a car to a spaceship or a robot. Here however we limit it to the more exotic things usually referred to as mecha anime: robots, whether controlled by a human or not, and their ilk. Military The anime concerns an organised armed force, and its members. Said body should have both the equipment and hierarchy found in military groups, and should ideally be actively utilising their power against an opponent. Characters are either employed as professional soldiers or enlisted on a volunteer basis, for ideological reasons. Navy As with Airforce and Military, this category is for anime that concerns an organised armed force, but it conduct naval or space warfare.

Note: Just because the anime contains warships, submarines or spaceships, unless it is actually about those armed forces, you might not want to add this genre. Original Work: New Not based on anything, the story is a new work, usually made up by the people involved in creating the anime. Generally if an original work (原作) credit is given, it will be to the studio, or director, or other members of the production team. Pantsu "Panties" in Japanese. Upskirt views in various positions are typical, however all forms of partial or fully exposed panties are accepted. Exposure is usually accidental, but may also be deliberate. Pantsu views may be exclusive to the viewer without impacting any characters. Bikinis are not pantsu. Power Suits Power Suits are similar to Piloted Robots which are controlled from inside the robot except that Power Suits tend to be more directly tied to how the character moves and they are usually not as big as Piloted Robots can be. They are still mechanical and shouldn`t be confused with plug suits. SciFi Science fiction stories usually focus on how situations could be different in the future when we are more technologically advanced; due to either our own achievements or having met with other civilizations whom we have learned from. Seinen A subset of anime or manga that is generally targeted at a 18 - 25 year old male audience, but the audience can be much older with some manga aimed at businessmen well into their 40s. Shoujo Ai Shoujo Ai means girls love, and as such it explores what happens when two girls (or women) fall in love. This is not to be mistaken for Yuri which is a hentai genre. This is not. Meaning no graphical sex. Small Breasts Focus on flat-chested (pettanko) to slightly protruding breasts, often so mockingly or humorously. Usually involves children or adolescent girls. Swordplay The act or art of using a sword or similar weapon skillfully. Time: Past Anime that takes place in the past or clearly seems to take place in the past in case of an alternative universe. This category should almost always go together with one of its sub-categories, because the past can either be a depiction of a historical event(s) or not, in which case it would be alternative past.

animal ears Human or humanoid characters have ears of animals as their natural set of ears or as a part of their costume. beach episode Also known as umi episode. Every anime has to have them, episodes in which the characters for whatever reason end up going to the sea, ocean, random island or the local pond.

Usually used for fanservice purpose as it gives the staff the opportunity to draw the characters in swimsuits and raise the DVD sales.

The cheap version is the pool episode.

Other marginally less used variants of this are the onsen episode and the sentou episode, used when it is too cold for a beach/pool episode. boobs in your face The protagonists face is pressed into a female`s cleavage. This may be accidental, or actually intended by the female character. breast fondling Part of the slapstick comedy in ecchi anime between female characters. E.g. a girl envious of another girl`s bust size may tease the latter via fondling. Usually playful and mischievous, not sexual.

Alas, now the tag can also imply "boob grabbing", where a male character will either accidentally or intentionally touch the breasts of a female. The former is a comedy element, as in "accidental infringement", the latter can be interpreted as a form of harassment. excessive fanservice Content that may be suggestive yet generally pleasing will be found in abundance. Usually this is the premise of something borderline-hentai with a large amount of strong sexual themes but without any actual sex-acts taking place.

As the -Fanservice tag- states:
`Fan Service` typically consists of a variety of racy or sexual content - usually female but sometimes male - aimed to catch the viewer`s attention, with something suggestive and generally `pleasing to the eyes`. More often than not this involves nudity, yet can simply have to do with panty shots / flashing of undergarments, bathing suits, the jiggling of breasts, or other such eye candy.
While the term is used primarily with respect to Japanese animation, any gratuitous content within entertainment may be considered to be `fan service`. faceless alien invasion Uncommunicative, faceless aliens suddenly invade Earth from outer space or a parallel world thus causing a war with humans. girls with guns From pistols and sniper rifles to fully automatic machine guns and grenade launchers - some or many of the female characters have selected guns as their weapon of choice, and they`re not afraid to prove it. growing up sucks Sweet childhood. When you are a child, everything is coloured into black and white. You do not have to have a care in the world nor any worries. There is not a lot you have to think about. A child`s imagination is limitless and everything becomes possible. You can have super powers or Mons that protect you for friends.

But once you grow up the world suddenly gets coloured in grey shades, you start worrying about the smallest things, you lose the ability to talk with your Mons and/or lose your super powers.

Yeah, growing up really sucks. I can fly One of the characters has wings, natural or artificial, which enable the character to take flight. loli with boobs `Loli` or `Lolita` usually refers to a female juvenile, frequently one who has only recently reached the age of consent, or appears to be `barely legal` in physical appearance and/or apparel.
In the anime sense, `lolis` are typically associated with being `flat chested`. In the case of `loli with boobs`, the Lolita-esque character has an unusually and atypically superior bust-size, compared to what is usually expected with the character type. magic circles A circle used to contain magical energy and/or to provide magical protection. It can be drawn (with chalk etc.) or it can just spontaneously appear as part of the spell/ritual. mecha musume no description set yet nekomimi Japanese for "cat ears". Usually refers to characters that have cat ears, i.e. cat girls. onsen episode An onsen is a term for hot springs in the Japanese language, though the term is often used to describe the bathing facilities and inns around the hot springs. Often the cast of a show somehow ends up going to an onsen because of various reasons, such as winning a lottery ticket.

Another cheap variant is the sentou episode. panty-less lolis Young flat-chested girls wearing no panties appear in the show. sentou episode A sentou is a type of Japanese communal bath house where customers pay for entrance. Traditionally it is gender-segregated - men usually bathe only with men, and women with women.

That calls for preferably scantily clad young ladies. Spies will dress in sexy outfits, even when the mission explicitly calls for them to not to be noticed. Female warriors will charge into battle wearing armour that does not protect the vital organs. Bridge officers on a military starship will be issued go-go boots with their uniforms. Examples are the women in VanDread, AIKa or the most famous incarnation of that tag, the Strike Witches and their precursor the Sky Girls. TV censoring The TV version is censored and later DVD/BD releases are uncensored, so the money-grubbing capitalists can make a couple more bucks at our expense. war setting An armed conflict is the main theme or plays a large role in this anime.
