Angst A feeling of general discomfort and uneasiness is present due to either trivial or more serious reasons, often accompanied by depression.
Warning: may contain copious amounts of brooding and sighing. Art Art plays an important part in the story and has central meaning to the characters (e.g. valuable paintings, or sculptures). Alternately the protagonists show a degree of artistic skill, e.g. as painters, sculptors, dress-makers, potters, musicians, composers, designers, etc.
The anime will then centre on the development of those skills, from the unrecognized dilettante stages, right up to the moment of (commercial) breakthrough. Asia Asia is the world`s largest and most populous continent. Boing The sound breasts make when they bounce. Size may vary, but mainly involves larger breasts in tight or otherwise sexy clothing. Partial or complete exposure may occur, usually emphasizing the boing-effect as they come out. Not capable of bouncing means no boing. Comedy Anime whose central struggle causes hilarious results. These stories are built upon funny characters, situations and events. A comedy anime is laced with humour and sets out to provoke laughter from the audience.
Japanese humour can be a bit strange to westerners, so if you`re new to this type of humour, just bear with it; it`ll most likely grow on you if you`re a fan of other kinds of comedy. Coming of Age In the strict sense the Coming of age describes a young person`s transition from adolescence to adulthood. In anime the term is used in a more general sense where the protagonists have to face a challenge, make an important decision in their life, take on responsibility, or learn a lesson, and by overcoming these obstacles they reach a higher level of maturity. Cyberpunk Cyberpunk focuses on computers or information technology, usually coupled with some degree of breakdown in social order. The plot often centres on a conflict among hackers, artificial intelligences, and mega corporations, tending to be set within a near-future dystopian Earth. Earth That big mud ball that most of us live on. Ecchi Ecchi, or etchi (エッチ), is a common Japanese word meaning "indecent", "lewd", "frisky" or "sexy", while its usage can be compared to the word "naughty". The term is used when vague sexual content, such as skimpy clothing or nudity, is prominent. Harem Harem anime is when three or more female characters that for some reason are in the presence of one male character as a central plot element. Generally, both the girls` looks and personalities vary a lot, and most of them are interested in the one guy. Sometimes, none of the girls are really interested at first, so the protagonist has to build relationships with them. Ecchi pretty much can`t be avoided, and it`s typical to see the protagonist stamped as a pervert by some of the girls, regardless of whether he is one. Many harem anime were originally visual novels, which may or may not feature erotic content, since it is quite common for visual novels to revolve around controlling the male lead and have him build relationships with either as many girls as possible or with one of them, the latter being more common for visual novels with branched story paths.
A story in which there is one female character and several good looking male characters is normally called a "reverse harem", or sometimes also "male harem". Aside from the swapping of the characters` genders, the trope`s details are mostly the same. Idol Idols are young media personalities who are considered particularly cute and cuddly and who will, for a period ranging from several months to a few years, regularly appear in the mass media, e.g. as singers for J-pop groups, bit-part actors, TV personalities, models in photo spreads published in magazines, advertisements, etc. Japan Last stronghold for humanity, if Tokyo falls, it`s all over. Tokyo Tower will undoubtedly fall anyway. Large Breasts Focus on larger than average breasts. Pretty common in anime. Usually involves adolescent girls or fully grown women. Love Polygon A love polygon refers to a romantic relationship involving n people. Although a love triangle is not limited to just heterosexual relationships, in anime, it usually deals with two females liking one male and vice versa. Music Music anime generally revolves around people concerned with music in their everyday lives. In addition they often adhere to certain genre conventions, the emphasis on training and practice in preparation for competitions, characters desire for self improvement, and pursuit of a specific goal. This is not unlike the Sports category. Nudity Nudity is the state of wearing no clothing and exposing the bare skin or intimate parts.
Especially gratuitous fanservice shows tend to show their characters frequently without any clothes, though often hiding genitals through the means of additions like steam. Original Work: Novel Note that novel means book with words in paper, so no comics and no "visual novels", which should go under manga and dating-sim - visual Novel/erotic game respectively.
Note that it can be applied to novels as we know them but also the typical light novels for teens and young adults, which are common in Japan and aside from being short include a number of illustrations. Pantsu "Panties" in Japanese. Upskirt views in various positions are typical, however all forms of partial or fully exposed panties are accepted. Exposure is usually accidental, but may also be deliberate. Pantsu views may be exclusive to the viewer without impacting any characters. Bikinis are not pantsu. Performance The song performance on stage or acting in a theatre is a central part of the character`s life in this anime type. Romance Romance describes a story that deals with love between two or more characters typically also having an optimistic ending. Romance is also a difficulty encountered when creating a harem. School Life Since a large part of the anime audience still takes part in school life or is visiting college, it is only natural to choose a setting the audience can identify with, be it elementary, middle, or high school. For the older viewers a college setting with more mature real-life problems is appropriate. And since clubs take up so much time in the lives of students, these are obviously also important. Seinen A subset of anime or manga that is generally targeted at a 18 - 25 year old male audience, but the audience can be much older with some manga aimed at businessmen well into their 40s. Stereotypes This show presents stereotypes, which are generalizations about a group of people. Examples would be saying that people from a certain country or with a certain hair color are stupid. If the show deals with comedy, the stereotypes are likely to be played on for laughs; if the show is a parody, the stereotypes will be exaggerated to have their flaws exposed and may be used as a form of social commentary. Time: Present Somewhere between past and future Twisted Twisted indicates more than one abrupt change in plot or story. This derivation from strict linear storytelling usually makes these anime hard to follow, and at times even very confusing when several parallel plots intertwine.

anything can be awesome Sometimes normal just doesn`t cut it, you need to make it awesome, no matter how mundane it is.
Let`s throw in some gripping orchestral music, lighting changes, different camera angles, something! Don`t write like a man, write like an Evil Overlord! Exaggerate your expressions and gestures, speak with excessive intonation, and if all else fails, throw in some close-ups, slow motion, and Ominous Latin Chanting! With practice, even you can turn something like eating chips into an epic battle of light and dark. boobs in your face The protagonists face is pressed into a female`s cleavage. This may be accidental, or actually intended by the female character. borderline hentai Breaks the bounds of "excessive fanservice".
While the physical interactions and dialogue between characters may be extremely sexual, the most sexual situations do *not* have sex itself take place.
Specifically descriptive of containing all the plentiful features of (excessive) fanservice in addition to the interactions between characters being quite sexual — at most, sexual in NATURE only. This means physical touching such as groping, molesting, or bondage will focus primarily on the revealed (i.e. nude) upper portion of the body or through/over clothing on the lower half of the body. This is all WITHOUT actual sex acts (penetration, etc.) taking place. breast fondling Part of the slapstick comedy in ecchi anime between female characters. E.g. a girl envious of another girl`s bust size may tease the latter via fondling. Usually playful and mischievous, not sexual.
Alas, now the tag can also imply "boob grabbing", where a male character will either accidentally or intentionally touch the breasts of a female. The former is a comedy element, as in "accidental infringement", the latter can be interpreted as a form of harassment. catastrophic gadgets Comedy element: One of the characters in the anime tends to "invent", "create", or "call into existence" all sorts of wacky gadgets. The intent is to help the other protagonists in some way. Only that this fails every single time, ending in a catastrophe. competition Some sort of confrontation occurs in this show. The protagonists "duke it out" via various competitions. excessive censoring This show (at least TV version) is censored to such an extent that it`s almost impossible or meaningless to watch. Recommended to wait until BD\Director`s version is out. fanservice `Fan Service` typically consists of a variety of racy or sexual content — usually female but sometimes male — aimed to catch the viewer`s attention, with something suggestive and generally `pleasing to the eyes`. More often than not this involves nudity, yet can simply have to do with panty shots / flashing of undergarments, bathing suits, the jiggling of breasts, or other such eye candy.
While the term is used primarily with respect to Japanese animation, any gratuitous content within entertainment may be considered to be `fan service`. Gainax bounce A term that has come to describe often exaggerated, very jiggly, fluid, and painstakingly detailed animation of female characters’ bouncing breasts. The term has its roots in Top wo Nerae! — Gunbuster, Gainax’s first OVA (1988), in which the Gainax bounce is found unabated in the three female characters of Noriko, Kazumi, and Jung. genius A gifted and very intelligent character appears in the anime. Usually way smarter than any fellow student of that age. hacking no description set yet indirect kiss Comedy element: Especially in a school setting the character who has fallen for a fellow student, but has not yet confessed his/her love, will be desperate for any sign of "closeness".
The indirect kiss: Anything the adored person touches with his/her lips — e.g. a used glass of lemonade, some half-eaten food, a half-emptied can of soda — the love struck will want to touch with her/his own lips. klutz As part of the slapstick comedy in anime there often is a character (usually female), who is particularly clumsy, i.e. tripping, bumping into objects, or dropping things. This lack of physical coordination is thought of as endearing. nopan Not wearing underwear (panties) under one`s outer clothing. nosebleed A comedy element: It is said that Asians, Japanese in this case, are more prone to nose bleeding when stressed or emotionally excited. As that may be, this physical display of excitement / emotions is used extensively in anime comedy.
Typically a male character will over-react to the presence of a bishoujo (beautiful girl), usually embarrassing himself and her. In rare cases there are also female characters who nosebleed, e.g. in the presence of a bishounen (handsome youth). The latter is actually funnier, because the female char suddenly loses her composure and poise.
Increasing the visual impact, "explosive nosebleeds" have become very popular in slapstick comedy. onsen episode An onsen is a term for hot springs in the Japanese language, though the term is often used to describe the bathing facilities and inns around the hot springs. Often the cast of a show somehow ends up going to an onsen because of various reasons, such as winning a lottery ticket.
Usually used for fanservice purpose as it gives the staff the opportunity to draw the characters nude and raise the DVD sales.
Another cheap variant is the sentou episode. ridiculous premise The principal ideas used to set up the overall story are questionable at best, and are difficult to accept as rational.
It seems that the writers involved in this anime were desperate to find a new idea, creating an outlandish story background. Such an irrational plot can become quite irritating. sexual fantasies One or more characters in this anime let their imaginations run wild thinking about another character.
Yes, they are thinking about sex, and in an ecchi anime these thoughts are often perverted, leading to a nosebleed. But it may also be romanticising simply being husband and wife, and everything that implies. sexual innuendo References to actions and/or situations of an intimate or sexual nature. skimpy clothing The characters are wearing skimpy clothing (short dresses, underwear, or otherwise revealing clothing) for no apparent reason.
This is *not* job related, like a superhero outfit, differing from the Tag: "skimpy clothing most fit for the job". spacing out A comedy element: The character starts to daydream or fantasize about some topic. The typical complete lack of reality makes the spacing out funny. Especially when the protagonist mumbles to himself / herself and friends hear this. Promptly teasing the possibly lovestruck and very embarrassed protagonist. tsundere A character type (usually female), who is often easily agitated or combative, but other times is quite kind and caring, especially in situations involving a person they are (knowingly or unknowingly) attracted to. TV censoring The TV version is censored and later DVD/BD releases are uncensored, so the money-grubbing capitalists can make a couple more bucks at our expense. violent retribution for ecchi behaviour One of the central vehicles of slapstick comedy with ecchi elements.
When one char misbehaves, or at least is perceived to do so, he/she gets reprimanded or whacked by another char — typically a tsundere — for ecchi (slightly perverted) behaviour. In this case it is *not* a reaction to *accidental* infringement, like tripping into cleavage.
As Asu no Yoichi! shows, the supposed "ecchi behaviour" of the male protagonist can also be over-interpreted by a tsundere. E.g. getting whacked for a nosebleed, when looking at a cute girl. yuri subtext Actions between two female characters that could be taken as or misinterpreted as being amorous in nature.
