Categories
Action
Action anime usually involve a fairly straightforward story of good guys versus bad guys, where most disputes are resolved by using physical force. It often contains a lot of shooting, explosions and fighting.
Angels
A supernatural being, said to be the messenger of God. They are often depicted as human beings with a pair of white feathered wings and sometimes with a halo.
Boing
The sound breasts make when they bounce. Size may vary, but mainly involves larger breasts in tight or otherwise sexy clothing. Partial or complete exposure may occur, usually emphasizing the boing-effect as they come out. Not capable of bouncing means no boing.
Demons
Often described as minions from Hell. Generally known to attack humans and feast on their flesh or possess the bodies of those with weak souls.
Ecchi
Ecchi, or etchi (エッチ), is a common Japanese word meaning "indecent", "lewd", "frisky" or "sexy", while its usage can be compared to the word "naughty". The term is used when vague sexual content, such as skimpy clothing or nudity, is prominent.
Elves
An elf (plural elves) is a being of Germanic mythology. The elves were originally thought of as a race of divine or semi-divine beings (wights, vættir) endowed with magical powers, which they use both for the benefit and the injury of mankind. In pre-Christian mythology, they appear to have been divided into light elves and dark elves, difficult to delineate from the Æsir (gods) on one hand and the dvergar (dwarves) on the other.
Fantasy
Magic and other supernatural forms are primary elements of plot, theme and/or setting. Distinguished from science fiction and horror by not involving scientific or macabre themes respectively, though the three genres can often overlap each other to some extent.
Fantasy World
A fantasy world is a type of imaginary world, part of a fictional universe. Typical worlds involve, but are not limited to magic or magical abilities and a medieval theme. Some worlds may be a parallel world tenuously connected to Earth via magical portals or items; a fictional Earth set in the remote past or future; or an entirely independent world set in another universe. Many fantasy worlds draw heavily on real world history, geography and sociology, and also on folklore.
Gigantic Breasts
Focus on unnaturally large breasts. Usually involves early developed adolescent girls or older women.
High Fantasy
Generally a serious and epic story set in an invented world. The world may be more or less based on real world environments or history. Typical fantastical elements are usually dominating, such as elves, dwarves, magicians, invented languages, quests; just to name a few.
Large Breasts
Focus on larger than average breasts. Pretty common in anime. Usually involves adolescent girls or fully grown women.
Magic
In a traditional Fantasy anime with medieval setting, the lack of technology is "compensated" by the introduction of the supernatural, i.e. spell-casting, magic wands, and magic circles.
In another setting long-lost technology may be so advanced that it is mistaken for magic (Arthur C. Clarke: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic"). See also related tag: science and magic coexist.
Martial Arts
Characterized by extensive fighting scenes employing various types of martial arts, meaning systems of codified practices and traditions of training for combat.
Nudity
Nudity is the state of wearing no clothing. Based on scientific research it is estimated that humans have been wearing clothing for 650,000 years. It is related to the concept of modesty and is sometimes used to refer to wearing significantly less clothing than expected by the conventions of a particular culture and situation, and in particular exposing the bare skin or intimate parts.
Especially gratuitous fanservice shows tend to show their, mostly female, characters, most often without any clothes, only hiding genitals through the means of additions like steam.

Based on an interactive (even if minimally so) form of entertainment software, generally available for PCs, consoles or arcade machines.
Pantsu
"Panties" in Japanese. Upskirt views in various positions are typical, however all forms of partial or fully exposed panties are accepted. Exposure is usually accidental, but may also be deliberate. Pantsu views may be exclusive to the viewer without impacting any characters. Bikinis are not pantsu.
Seinen
A subset of anime or manga that is generally targeted at a 18 - 25 year old male audience, but the audience can be much older with some manga aimed at businessmen well into their 40s.
Small Breasts
Focus on flat-chested (pettanko) to slightly protruding breasts, often so mockingly or humorously. Usually involves children or adolescent girls.
Swordplay
The act or art of using a sword or similar weapon skillfully.
Time: Past
Anime that takes place in the past or clearly seems to take place in the past in case of an alternative universe. This category should almost always go together with one of its sub-categories, because the past can either be a depiction of a historical event(s) or not, in which case it would be alternative past.
Violence
Physical force against self or other, compelling action against one`s will on pain of being hurt.
Tags
acid milk
A tag exclusive (at the time of its addition) to the demonic character Melona (Merona) of the Queen`s Blade franchise. She is well known for one of her primary methods of assault, which involve hair that extends downward from her head cupping under her breasts in appearance of hands, which then squeeze... an extremely acidic lactation of sorts is the disturbing result.
all-female cast
All primary characters are female. Male characters, if any, will only have minor roles or be entirely absent from the story`s focus.
ass-kicking girls
The female characters in the anime are very proficient in some form of martial arts, swordplay, or gunfights. They may also have super powers.
borderline hentai
Breaks the bounds of "excessive fanservice".
While the physical interactions and dialogue between characters may be extremely sexual, the most sexual situations do NOT have sex itself take place.
Specifically descriptive of containing all the plentiful features of (excessive) fanservice in addition to the interactions between characters being quite sexual - at most, sexual in NATURE only. This means physical touching such as groping, molesting, or bondage will focus primarily on the revealed (i.e. nude) upper portion of the body or through/over clothing on the lower half of the body. This is all WITHOUT actual sex acts (penetration, etc) taking place.
excessive fanservice
Content that may be suggestive yet generally pleasing will be found in abundance. Usually this is the premise of something borderline-hentai with a large amount of strong sexual themes but without any actual sex-acts taking place.
As the -Fanservice tag- states:
`Fan Service` typically consists of a variety of racy or sexual content - usually female but sometimes male - aimed to catch the viewer`s attention, with something suggestive and generally `pleasing to the eyes`. More often than not this involves nudity, yet can simply have to do with panty shots / flashing of undergarments, bathing suits, the jiggling of breasts, or other such eye candy.
While the term is used primarily with respect to Japanese animation, any gratuitous content within entertainment may be considered to be `fan service`.
female warriors
Females who are portrayed as particularly experienced in warfare or combative settings. They have well toned vigor and aggressiveness in battle, often with personalities valuing honour, faith, loyalty and courage.
Weapons of choice are usually of the hand-to-hand-combat or melee variety (such as the sword and shield combination).
Their attire is commonly comprised of suits of armor - although depending on genre, may seem to be more for display purposes while lacking in concealment of certain vital portions of the body.
In most high fantasies, there stands no bounds of limitation between the size and attributes of the warrior in comparison to that of the nature of weapons and equipment they wield. Some may even use long range weaponry (such as bows/crossbows) or magic.
girls with swords
Female characters with various swords as their main weapon of choice. Although the size and shape of the blade is often unique and even drastically over-sized, the wielder is almost always free from extra restraint it would be thought to inflict upon them.
miko
A Japanese shrine maiden, usually depicted wearing a white kimono shirt and a red hakama (a cross between pants and a long skirt). They are often priestesses at Shinto shrines.
paper clothes
Usually a fanservice tag. Worn clothing appears paper-thin and takes little abuse to be shredded or torn from the body. This is common in ecchi anime where the main storyline involves some type of fighting but consists primarily of dialogue and fanservice (Ikkitousen and Platonic Heart). Various girls’ clothing exploding as if made of rice paper is a very enticing prospect.
polearms
A close-combat weapon consisting of a sharp, pointed and/or bladed end attached to a long, wooden (or metallic) shaft - thereby extending the user`s effective range.
In anime, the extensive length and weight of the weapon may seem too large for the user to wield. In spite of that, attacks will be executed with unprecedented ease, suggesting the wielder to be stronger than they might first appear.
Spears, glaives, poleaxes, halberds, and bardiches are all varieties of polearm.
Purposes of using pole weapons include extending of reach or to increase angular momentum — and thus striking power — when the weapon is swung.
skimpy clothing most fit for the job
When a job needs to get done you need the appropriate clothing on the appropriate persons. That calls for preferably scantily clad young ladies. Spies will dress in sexy outfits, even when the mission explicitly calls for them to not to be noticed. Female warriors will charge into battle wearing armour that does not protect the vital organs. Bridge officers on a military starship will be issued go-go boots with their uniforms. Examples are the women in VanDread, AIKa or the most famous incarnation of that tag, the Strike Witches and their precursor the Sky Girls.
tournament
A competition involving a large number or participants. Such competitions may range from friendly, moderated sporting events to anything-goes, all-out fights to the death.
All participants take part in the tournament in want or need of the final goal and possible prizes; which depending on genre, may range from a boastful record at school to great riches and/or the granting of a wish.
Depending on the type of tournament, contestants will either act alone, be permitted a team, or construct a team of chance throughout the ongoing competition.
