| Thursday, 10 December 2009 | | Watch Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu: Purezza English subbed anime
The series consists of adaptations of six modern classics of Japanese literature: Osamu Dazai’s No Longer Human (Ningen Shikkaku) & Run, Melos! (Hashire, Melos!), Natsume Soseki’s Kokoro, Ryunosuke Akutagawa’s Hell Screen (Jigoku Hen) & The Spider's Thread (Kumo no Ito), and Ango Sakaguchi's In the Forest, Under Cherries in Full Bloom (Sakura no Mori no Mankai no Shita).
No Longer Human (Ningen Shikkaku) - A high school student becomes lost and alienated. Despondent and aimless, he falls into a cycle of self abuse, depression and drugs that taints his life for years. Told in three chapters, each chapter deals with a different point in his life and the final chapter leaves him standing alone - an empty and hollow charicature of his former self.
In the Forest, Under Cherries in Full Bloom(Sakura no Mori no Mankai no Shita) - A love story between a 12th-century woman and a mountain bandit who abducts her.
Run, Melos! (Hashire, Melos!) - An updated retelling of a classic Greek tale of the story of Damon and Pythias. The most prominent theme of "Run, Melos!" is unwavering friendship. Despite facing hardships, the protagonist Melos does his best to save his friend's life, and in the end his efforts are rewarded.
Hell Screen (Jigoku Hen) - A famous artist is commissioned by a great lord to create a series of paintings depicting scenes of the 'Buddhist Hell'. The artist is unable to paint scenes that he has not seen himself, prompting him to torture and torment the Lord's staff to create his imagined images of hell. His creative efforts taint the household, as the story descends into madness and destruction.
Kokoro - A 1914 tale of a young man's life journey during the Meiji era. The work deals with the transition from the Japanese Meiji society to the modern era, by exploring the friendship between a young man and an older man he calls "Sensei". It continues the theme of isolation developed in Soseki's previous works, here in the context of interwoven strands of egoism and guilt, as opposed to shame
The Spider's Thread (Kumo no Ito) - The Buddha Shakyamuni chances to notice a cold-hearted criminal suffering in Hell. But this criminal did perform one single act of kindness in not stepping on a spider in a forest. Moved by this selfless act, Shakyamuni takes the silvery thread of a spider in Paradise and lowers it down into Hell, but it falls upon the criminal to seize the opportunity and pull himself out - if he can.
Categories
Asia
Asia is the world`s largest and most populous continent.
Boing
The sound breasts make when they bounce. Size may vary, but mainly involves larger breasts in tight or otherwise sexy clothing. Partial or complete exposure may occur, usually emphasizing the boing-effect as they come out. Not capable of bouncing means no boing.
Comedy
Anime whose central struggle causes hilarious results. These stories are built upon funny characters, situations and events. A comedy anime is laced with humour and sets out to provoke laughter from the audience.
Japanese humour can be a bit strange to westerners, so if you`re new to this type of humour, just bear with it; it`ll most likely grow on you if you`re a fan of other kinds of comedy.
Earth
That big mud ball that most of us live on.
Ecchi
Ecchi, or etchi (エッチ), is a common Japanese word meaning "indecent", "lewd", "frisky" or "sexy", while its usage can be compared to the word "naughty". The term is used when vague sexual content, such as skimpy clothing or nudity, is prominent.
Female Students
Pretty much exclusive to hentai shows only unless an ecchi show has implied sex and/or a strong indicator of nudity. A character is considered a student if she goes to school, doesn`t matter if it`s high school, college or homeschooling, but she should be of appropriate age for a student; a housewife going to college should not get this category.
Female Teachers
Any kind of female teacher will do, even if she only does home visits. Female teachers imply mature women (even if they sometimes look like schoolgirls) dressed in what women would typically wear when doing official business (like a blouse, pinstripe dress with side front slit), but of course, not limited to that. Furthermore, school nurses also count as female teachers unless they`re actually wearing a nurse outfit, which they almost never are.
Almost completely exclusive to hentai animations.
Harem
Harem anime is when three or more females that for some reason are in the presence of one male as a central plot element. Generally, both the girls` looks and personalities vary a lot, and most of them are interested in the one guy. Sometimes, none of the girls are really interested at first, so the protagonist has to build relationships with them. Ecchi pretty much can`t be avoided, and it`s typical to see the protagonist stamped as a pervert by some of the girls, whether he is one or not. A lot of harem anime were originally Visual Novels, since most Visual Novels revolve around controlling this one guy, trying to build a relationship with several girls.
In a story where there is one female and several good looking males it`s a "reverse harem" or "male harem".
Idol
The anime revolves around people who are working towards a solo career.
Japan
Last stronghold for humanity, if Tokyo falls, it`s all over. Tokyo tower will undoubtedly fall anyway.
Large Breasts
Focus on larger than average breasts. Pretty common in anime. Usually involves adolescent girls or fully grown women.
Maids
A maid is a female employed in domestic service. They usually wear uniforms. Maids perform typical domestic chores such as cooking, ironing, washing, cleaning the house, grocery shopping, walking the family dog, and taking care of children.
Nudity
Nudity is the state of wearing no clothing. Based on scientific research it is estimated that humans have been wearing clothing for 650,000 years. It is related to the concept of modesty and is sometimes used to refer to wearing significantly less clothing than expected by the conventions of a particular culture and situation, and in particular exposing the bare skin or intimate parts.
Especially gracious fanservice shows tend to show their, mostly female, characters, most often without any clothes, only hiding genitals through the means of additions like steam.
Original Work: Novel
Note that novel means book with words in paper, so no comics and no "visual novels", which should go under manga and dating-sim - visual Novel/erotic game respectively.
Note that it can be applied to novels as we know them but also the typical light novels for teens and young adults, which are common in Japan and aside from being short include a number of illustrations.
Pantsu
"Panties" in Japanese. Upskirt views in various positions are typical, however all forms of partial or fully exposed panties are accepted. Exposure is usually accidental, but may also be deliberate. Pantsu views may be exclusive to the viewer without impacting any characters. Bikinis are not pantsu.
Parody
Anime that imitate other stories (can be from TV, film, books, historical events, ...) for comic effect by exaggerating the style and changing the content of the original. Also known as spoofs. It can also refer to when whole elements of one work are lifted out of their context and reused.
Performance
The song performance on stage or acting in a theatre is a central part of the character`s life in this anime type.
Romance
Romance describes a story that deals with love between two or more characters typically also having an optimistic ending.
School Life
Since a large part of the anime audience still takes part in school life or is visiting college, it is only natural to choose a setting the audience can identify with, be it elementary, middle, or high school. For the older viewers a college setting with more mature real-life problems is appropriate. And since clubs take up so much time in the lives of students, these are obviously also important.
Seinen
A subset of anime or manga that is generally targeted at a 18 - 25 year old male audience, but the audience can be much older with some manga aimed at businessmen well into their 40s.
Sexual Abuse
Sexual abuse (also referred to as molestation) is defined as the forcing of undesired sexual acts by one person to another. Different types of sexual abuse involve:
Non-consensual, forced physical sexual behaviour such as rape or sexual assault;
Psychological forms of abuse, such as verbal sexual behaviour or stalking;
The use of a position of trust for sexual purposes;
Incest, when it is coerced by force or emotional manipulation.
The font size (category weight) for this category is meant to show the "worst" scene in given anime, on-screen rape or sexual assault would be the biggest font size (weight of ***), verbal sexual abuse or stalking (non-comedy scenario) would be the smallest font size (weight of ).
This category is only meant for non-hentai animations, hentai animations have the Rape category.
Small Breasts
Focus on flat-chested (pettanko) to slightly protruding breasts, often so mockingly or humorously. Usually involves children or adolescent girls.
Sports
Sports anime revolves around a recreational physical activity or skill. In addition they often adhere to certain genre conventions, the emphasis on training and practice in preparation for competition, characters desire for self improvement, and pursuit of a specific goal.
Stereotypes
Then there is the question of the character set presentation. Is it completely original, or is it your usual stereotypical character cast. Both choices have their merit, for example it would not really make much sense to reinvent the wheel for a harem anime. Fans of that genre come to expect their favourite stereotype protagonists.
Time: Present
Somewhere between past and future
Tags
alcohol
The presumably over-age characters in the anime tend to drink their fill. Usually used as a comedy element.
For example a female protagonist shows inappropriate, mildly ecchi behaviour when drunk from beer, or more commonly sake.
breast fondling
Part of the slapstick comedy in ecchi anime between female characters. E.g. a girl envious of another girl`s bust size may tease the latter via fondling. Usually playful and mischievous, not sexual.
Alas, now the tag can also imply "boob grabbing", where a male character will either accidentally or intentionally touch the breasts of a female. The former is a comedy element, as in "accidental infringement", the latter can be interpreted as a form of harassment.
Christmas
This anime is about Christmas or has an episode relating to Christmas.
cosplay
The act of dressing or disguising oneself as (but not limited to) a character, occupation, animal, or a combination of such things that are non relative to what would be considered natural characteristics of them.
Well known feminine cosplay examples consist of (but not nearly limited to) rare yet honorary or well respected occupations such as nurses, maids or shrine-priestesses. with the most portrayed animal crossover being the infamous cat-girl. Character cosplays consist primarily of characters from anime, manga, or video-games.
desu
A Japanese polite linking word, often added to the end of a sentence.
Comedy element: Overly cute / polite (female) characters may use "desu" inappropriately often when saying something.
fanservice
`Fan Service` typically consists of a variety of racy or sexual content - usually female but sometimes male - aimed to catch the viewer`s attention, with something suggestive and generally `pleasing to the eyes`. More often than not this involves nudity, yet can simply have to do with panty shots / flashing of undergarments, bathing suits, the jiggling of breasts, or other such eye candy.
While the term is used primarily with respect to Japanese animation, any gratuitous content within entertainment may be considered to be `fan service`.
fog of war
This is why you need map hack for TV airings of fan service episodes.
Gainax bounce
A term that has come to describe often exaggerated, very jiggly, fluid, and painstakingly detailed animation of female characters` bouncing breasts. The term has its roots in Top wo Nerae! - Gunbuster, Gainax`s first OVA (1988), in which the Gainax bounce is found unabated in the three female characters of Noriko, Kazumi, and Jung.
immature teacher
Contains one or more teachers who are more childish and irresponsible than the kids they teach.
moe
Moe refers to characters (most often female) whose cute, innocent mannerisms and flaws, such as clumsiness or insecurity, result in a strong response of adoration and protectiveness from the viewer. Moe characters may be considered sexy by viewers, though that is not a requirement per se.
New Year`s Day
It is tradition in Japan to celebrate the new year at a Shinto shrine (hatsumode). The protagonists will offer some money, ring a bell at the end of a thick rope, and then pray for good fortune.
This usually goes along with gorging yourself at the many temporary food stalls, playing various games, and drawing a fortune.
The female characters in the anime will usually dress up in a kimono, to show off their traditional Japanese clothing, while watching the fireworks.
not as good as the first
This series is perceived as worse or rated lower than its predecessor -- the first original series/universe that it is based on.
onsen episode
An onsen is a term for hot springs in the Japanese language, though the term is often used to describe the bathing facilities and inns around the hot springs. Often the cast of a show somehow ends up going to an onsen because of various reasons, such as winning a lottery ticket.
Usually used for fanservice purpose as it gives the staff the opportunity to draw the characters nude and raise the DVD sales.
Another cheap variant is the sentou episode.
otaku culture
Otaku (おたく/オタク?) is a Japanese term used to refer to people with obsessive interests, particularly anime, manga, and video games. A female otaku is occasionally referred to as a fujoshi. (Source: Wikipedia)
Here certain aspects of this "fandom" are presented in more detail, e.g. the creation of doujinshi (self-published amateur manga).
overly cute catchphrase
Mostly a sound or neologism used by characters to make them look cute or `moe` to the viewer. Examples would be Misuzu`s `gao` in AIR, Sakura`s `hoe` in Card Captor Sakura, Suiseiseki`s `desu` in Rozen Maiden or Ayu`s `uguu` in Kanon (as well as several other characters in the same show).
parental abandonment
In Japan it is a common custom for parents to leave their children alone at home and embark on a lifelong trip around the world once they hit the tender age of 14, sometimes even earlier.
perverted teacher
Supposedly added as a comedy element: A teacher exhibits slightly perverted tendencies.
Like a male teacher with a high school girl fetish or a female teacher who likes to pose in class wearing frilly underwear.
show within a show
A fictional TV (or radio, or stage) show that takes place within an actual TV show; or, occasionally, a fictional instalment or incarnation of an actual show. Many comedies have short one-off gags where they parody existing shows.
Example: A large part of Martian Successor Nadesico is centred around the fictional popular anime Gekigangar III, which is being watched by several characters of the Nadesico crew.
showbiz
The anime depicts how the show business works. Usually in a non-flattering way.
slow when it comes to love
The main protagonists in this anime have a very hard time trying to express their feelings to each other. They simply will not finally confess their love.
In some cases this romance element is based on unrequited love, or an absurd amount of shyness.
snow

theme park episode
The protagonists have a day off and visit a theme park for some fun and games. This can actually be a "date" setting, but can just as well simply be the setting for a group outing.
too shy-shy girl
no description set yet
TV censoring
The TV version is censored and later DVD/BD releases are uncensored, so the money-grubbing capitalists can make a couple more bucks at our expense.
zettai ryouiki
Japanese for "absolute area", and refers to an area of bare skin on the legs between a skirt and knee- or thigh high stockings.
