Asia Asia is the world`s largest and most populous continent. Comedy Anime whose central struggle causes hilarious results. These stories are built upon funny characters, situations and events. A comedy anime is laced with humour and sets out to provoke laughter from the audience.
Japanese humour can be a bit strange to westerners, so if you`re new to this type of humour, just bear with it; it`ll most likely grow on you if you`re a fan of other kinds of comedy. Earth That big mud ball that most of us live on. Ecchi Ecchi, or etchi (エッチ), is a common Japanese word meaning “indecent”, “lewd”, “frisky” or “sexy”, while its usage can be compared to the word “naughty”. The term is used when vague sexual content, such as skimpy clothing or nudity, is prominent. High School The upper-secondary education (not compulsory in Japan) covers the grades ten, eleven, and twelve. The students are typically fifteen to eighteen years old.
Anime centre on High School settings predominately: Plot/story-wise the coming of age is of interest - the students are almost adults (their bodies have matured, see ecchi anime) with more earnest, real-life problems. Japan Last stronghold for humanity, if Tokyo falls, it`s all over. Tokyo tower will undoubtedly fall anyway. Original Work: Manga Manga is the lifeblood that drives the anime industry. Everything and its mother is based on manga. However! There are exceptions where the manga was not the basis for the anime.
It`s common practice to make manga adaptations of many popular anime, there`s a manga based on Evangelion, and two (one shounen and one shoujo) based on each of Escaflowne and Mahou Tsukai Tai. Also it`s quite common to release manga and anime versions of a story in parallel, for instance Nadesico and Shoujo Kakumei Utena. There are also cases where an anime continues in a manga, or reverse, as in the case of Angel Beats! and Angel Beats: Heaven`s Door. Parody Anime that imitate other stories (can be from TV, film, books, historical events, ...) for comic effect by exaggerating the style and changing the content of the original. Also known as spoofs. It can also refer to when whole elements of one work are lifted out of their context and reused. Romance Romance describes a story that deals with love between two or more characters typically also having an optimistic ending. Romance is also a difficulty encountered when creating a harem. School Life Since a large part of the anime audience still takes part in school life or is visiting college, it is only natural to choose a setting the audience can identify with, be it elementary, middle, or high school. For the older viewers a college setting with more mature real-life problems is appropriate. And since clubs take up so much time in the lives of students, these are obviously also important. Seinen A subset of anime or manga that is generally targeted at a 18 - 25 year old male audience, but the audience can be much older with some manga aimed at businessmen well into their 40s. Shoujo Ai Shoujo Ai means girls love, and as such it explores what happens when two girls (or women) fall in love. This is not to be mistaken for Yuri which is a hentai genre. This is not. Meaning no graphical sex. Super Deformed A caricature style often seen in anime when the character shows extreme emotions, like fear, anger, happiness, surprise, or shame. Seen as cute, as part of humorous comedy. The character`s face suddenly turns into a simplified version, the body will usually also deform into that of a small child (oversized head, short limbs, extra-large tears). Time: Present Somewhere between past and future Traps A male character often mistaken as a female by other characters and/or the viewer due to his feminine appearance, behaviour, and/or language (regardless of his intention).

all-girls school This school is only for female students. There may be a few male teachers though. animated manga elements The animation portrays manga-like features; such as on-screen thoughts, word bubbles, super-deformed appearing with non-deformed, uniquely-styled freeze frames with animation otherwise not used, etc. awesome animation Describes the style of an animation production that deems itself respectfully noteworthy for its impressive uniqueness of appearance and attention, emphasis, or exaggeration to all or specific characteristics, constructions and details that make it so recognizable. awesome characters One or more cast members are considered awesome for one reason or more. awesome nosebleed Just when you had thought
"Duh, again this typical nosebleed trope in the very same way...",
you are surprisingly entertained with unusually great / stylistic nosebleed — that is `perhaps` breaking the boundaries of all the known physics laws. catholic school A setting for this anime is a school run by the nuns and/or priests of the Church Of Rome.
Religious instruction may be an integral part of the plot. Religious icons - particulary crosses and crucifixes are usually prominent. comic relief animal sidekick Every mahou shoujo anime needs them, the cute little critters that are supposed to help the protagonists but in reality are nothing but useless bystanders most often abused for gags. Kids love them but they can also often turn into an annoyance. cross-dressing Describes a person who takes on the role of their opposite gender, physically involving appearance and clothing only. The cross-dressing person, usually intending to keep their true identity secret for a long duration of time, tends to become well adapt in portraying their disguise, for example in voice, action/reaction, likes/dislikes, movements, etc. dear mother in heaven no description set yet dubious allergy to boys only attracts more boys A character will be found responding to boys as if allergic to them. While the actual reason behind it can be left to unique character-development, the unfortunate victim will suffer as if it were a real allergy. Examples are anything from an exaggerated yet unexplained fear to hives and fainting spells.
Of course with this type of character reaction present, it can only mean that the allergic will be presented with situations to suffer by on more occasions than logically reasonable.
The opposite, "dubious allergy to girls only attracts more girls" also exists. extreme wackiness The anime is not just a bit on the hysterical side, it is totally whacked out and over the top. A large amount of quick dialogues and much slapstick violence move the plot forward at a reckless pace.
All this can be hilarious, but may also make the anime hard to follow and potentially annoying after some time. funny as hell no description set yet gender bender Term used to refer to a person who takes on the role of their opposite gender. This often only reaches to the extent of cross-dressing (involving physical appearance and clothing only), but in rarer cases, involves a total gender swap (which seems to be more common in anime) - where the willing or unwilling victim receives a body opposite of their original gender (either permanently or temporarily), with all natural parts per their new body fully (or just all-out amply) included.
Example of cross-dressing gender bender: "Maria Holic"
Examples of body-swap gender bender: "Kashimashi: Girl meets Girl", "Birdy the Mighty Decode" great voice acting The seiyū (voice actors) have done a great job with their talented voices. They breathe life into the character they represent as though expressing their very selves through their animated counter-part. guy shorter than girl He is short, she is tall, it`s destiny. hilarious The anime is outrageously funny. lots of blood This anime contains a fair amount of bloody scenes. maid abuse no description set yet master-servant relationship To some genres, this would suggest a genuine pairing where one person exists to serve another person, such as in some action/dramas where the pair becomes united by destiny as partners - fighting or battles between different pairs/partners will usually be a dominant part of the story.
In other genres, this suggests a relationship where one person may be occupied as or even forcefully treated as a servant or slave to the other who designates themself the master - these services usually apply anywhere from tsundere/romantic-comedies to ecchi or to the more extreme in hentai. nekomimi Japanese for “cat ears”. Usually refers to characters that have cat ears, i.e. cat girls. nosebleed A comedy element: It is said that Asians, Japanese in this case, are more prone to nose bleeding when stressed or emotionally excited. As that may be, this physical display of excitement / emotions is used extensively in anime comedy.
Typically a male character will over-react to the presence of a bishoujo (beautiful girl), usually embarrassing himself and her. In rare cases there are also female characters who nosebleed, e.g. in the presence of a bishounen (handsome youth). The latter is actually funnier, because the female char suddenly loses her composure and poise.
Increasing the visual impact, "explosive nosebleeds" have become very popular in slapstick comedy. nosebleed girl Comedy element: One of the female characters — often in a school setting — will show an excessive emotional reaction to something. This form of "excitement" will make her nose bleed.
Examples: Girl sees a bishounen, or when it comes to shoujo ai, sees another girl (bishoujo) in a daring pose.
Usually, boys will show such a reaction when e.g. seeing a pretty girl. In this case the reverse situation is quite rare by comparison. pause it! The animation is often interrupted by images or text panels that flash by so quickly that the viewer can not recognize the image or read the text fast enough while playing at regular speed. Given the short span of time the images/text are shown on screen they are usually not integral to the plot. perverted lesbian lead character no description set yet popularity fetish no description set yet
