Based on a shoujo manga by Nakahara Aya, serialised in Margaret.
Risa and Otani are always being laughed at as the comedy duo. Risa, a girl, is taller than the average girl, and Otani, a boy, is shorter than the average boy. The two are always bickering and even their teacher sees them as a comedy act. But as their friendship develops, so do Risa's feelings toward Otani.
Categories
Angst
A feeling of general discomfort and uneasiness is present due to either trivial or more serious reasons, often accompanied by depression.
Asia
Asia is the world`s largest and most populous continent.
Basketball
Basketball is Netball for men, the real game that encourages dribbling and other such uncouth behaviour that was sanitised out of the ladies` version. However, it is itself woozy compared to Ulama, as the losing side are seldom publicly sacrificed.
Bishounen
Young man whose beauty (and sexual appeal) transcends the boundary of gender or sexual orientation.
Clubs
Even though school clubs in Japan are not mandatory, there is some pressure from the social grid (e.g. fellow students, teachers) to participate in some kind of after-school activity, be it in sports or arts. Colleges also have clubs.
As a comedy element in anime, some students have joined too many clubs, and are thus constantly stressed out. There is also the element of social commentary, making it clear that you have to join a club, if you want to be part of the class. Since self-founded clubs need at least 3 members, the desperate search and advertising for new members can be cause for hilarity in anime.
Comedy
Anime whose central struggle causes hilarious results. These stories are built upon funny characters, situations and events. A comedy anime is laced with humour and sets out to provoke laughter from the audience.
Japanese humour can be a bit strange to westerners, so if you`re new to this type of humour, just bear with it; it`ll most likely grow on you if you`re a fan of other kinds of comedy.
Coming of Age
In the strict sense the Coming of age describes a young person`s transition from adolescence to adulthood. In anime the term is used in a more general sense where the protagonists have to face a challenge, make an important decision in their life, take on responsibility, or learn a lesson, and by overcoming these obstacles they reach a higher level of maturity.
Daily Life
The antics of the protagonists do not take place in some exotic setting or time, but in everyday life. When not "at the job" this means getting up in the morning, making meals, house cleaning, going shopping or out to eat, visiting the bath house or spa, leisure activities in the spare time, etc. The time "on the job" for students is School Life, for others working in their profession. Daily Life is basically a synonym for everything normal, repetitive, and trivial happening to your average person.
Earth
That big mud ball that most of us live on.
High School
The upper-secondary education (not compulsory in Japan) covers the grades ten, eleven, and twelve. The students are typically fifteen to eighteen years old.
Anime centre on High School settings predominately: Plot/story-wise the coming of age is of interest - the students are almost adults (their bodies have matured, see ecchi anime) with more earnest, real-life problems.
Japan
Last stronghold for humanity, if Tokyo falls, it`s all over. Tokyo tower will undoubtedly fall anyway.
Love Polygon
A love polygon refers to a romantic relationship involving n people. Although a love triangle is not limited to just heterosexual relationships, in anime, it usually deals with two females liking one male and vice versa.
Original Work: Manga
Manga is the lifeblood that drives the anime industry. Everything and its mother is based on manga. However! There are exceptions where the manga was not the basis for the anime.
It`s common practice to make manga adaptations of many popular anime, there`s a manga based on Evangelion, and two (one shounen and one shoujo) based on each of Escaflowne and Mahou Tsukai Tai. Also it`s quite common to release manga and anime versions of a story in parallel, for instance Nadesico and Shoujo Kakumei Utena. There are also cases where an anime continues in a manga, or reverse, as in the case of Angel Beats! and Angel Beats: Heaven`s Door.
Plot Continuity
Consistency of the characteristics of persons, plot, objects, places and events seen by the viewer.
A single linear focused plot is highly continuous.
A truly random plot is highly discontinuous.
Romance
Romance describes a story that deals with love between two or more characters typically also having an optimistic ending.
School Life
Since a large part of the anime audience still takes part in school life or is visiting college, it is only natural to choose a setting the audience can identify with, be it elementary, middle, or high school. For the older viewers a college setting with more mature real-life problems is appropriate. And since clubs take up so much time in the lives of students, these are obviously also important.
Shoujo
A style of anime and manga intended for girls which may have some crossover appeal to boys as well.
Shounen Ai
Shounen Ai means boys love, and thus explores what happens when two boys (or men) fall in love. This is not to be mistaken for Yaoi which is a hentai genre. This is not. Meaning no graphical sex.
Slapstick
Slapstick humour is generally recognized by lots of physical abuse, horseplay and practical jokes. Also often seen are impossible situations, using sounds to illustrate impossible stunts that aren`t shown on-screen and to create tension for audience anticipation.
Sports
Sports anime revolves around a recreational physical activity or skill. In addition they often adhere to certain genre conventions, the emphasis on training and practice in preparation for competition, characters desire for self improvement, and pursuit of a specific goal.
Stereotypes
Then there is the question of the character set presentation. Is it completely original, or is it your usual stereotypical character cast. Both choices have their merit, for example it would not really make much sense to reinvent the wheel for a harem anime. Fans of that genre come to expect their favourite stereotype protagonists.
Super Deformed
A caricature style often seen in anime when the character shows extreme emotions, like fear, anger, happiness, surprise, or shame. Seen as cute, as part of humorous comedy. The character`s face suddenly turns into a simplified version, the body will usually also deform into that of a small child (oversized head, short limbs, extra-large tears).
Time: Present
Somewhere between past and future
Traps
A male character often mistaken as a female by other characters and/or the viewer due to his feminine appearance, behaviour, and/or language (regardless of his intention).
Twisted
Twisted indicates more than one abrupt change in plot or story. This derivation from strict linear storytelling usually makes these anime hard to follow, and at times even very confusing when several parallel plots intertwine.
Tags
awesome comedy duo
A pair of strongly contrasting characters with incredibly quick and witty dialogues bring about much hilarity.
Classic comedy duos include Laurel and Hardy, or R2-D2 and C-3PO.
awesome romance
Amazing romance story with depth, very heart-wrenching.
beach episode
Also known as umi episode. Every anime has to have them, episodes in which the characters for whatever reason end up going to the sea, ocean, random island or the local pond.
Usually used for fanservice purpose as it gives the staff the opportunity to draw the characters in swimsuits and raise the DVD sales.
The cheap version is the pool episode.
Other marginally less used variants of this are the onsen episode and the sentou episode, used when it is too cold for a beach/pool episode.
Christmas
This anime is about Christmas or has an episode relating to Christmas.
confession
Someone confesses his/her love to someone else.
In a school setting it will usually be a boy confessing his love to a girl, though the more modern Japanese girls in anime will do quite a bit of confessing as well.
Since this is anime, girl/girl (shoujo ai) or boy/boy (shounen ai) confessions also happen.
dialogue driven
The plot of the anime is advanced by interesting and intriguing dialogues. Action is clearly of very much lower priority.
emotionally moving
Story, setting, and character development / interaction will move the viewer emotionally. Also see "tear jerker".
facial distortion
The characters face are exaggerated into a misshape, deformed, and almost warped. Used as comedy element to express extreme mood swings.
Differing from "Super Deformed", here only the face changes to an extreme degree, not the whole body of the protagonist.
first kiss
The first kiss plays a role in this anime. Especially for the female cast this can be quite an important moment, so that stealing ones first kiss is serious for them.
funny expressions
The facial expressions of the characters may change so quickly or unexpectedly distorted that hilarity will ensue.
guy shorter than girl
He is short, she is tall, it`s destiny.
hilarious
The anime is outrageously funny.
Kansai-ben
The Kansai-ben is a distinct group of related Japanese dialects found in the Kansai region of Japan. They are typified by the speech of Osaka, which is referred to specifically as Osaka-ben. It is characterized as being both more melodic and harsher by speakers of the standard language.
Note: Accent from the Kansai region of Japan, treated similarly to a southern accent in the US.
karaoke
Obligatory national pastime for students in any anime with school setting. Amateur singing to subtitled music videos.
misunderstanding
Suggests that a large portion of storyline revolves around a rather large misunderstanding between two or more characters, usually forming long lasting situations of separation or hostility between all those involved.
A large portion of the story may be dedicated to gradually working all parties into a mutual understanding to true intentions or changes of heart.
New Year`s Day
It is tradition in Japan to celebrate the new year at a Shinto shrine (hatsumode). The protagonists will offer some money, ring a bell at the end of a thick rope, and then pray for good fortune.
This usually goes along with gorging yourself at the many temporary food stalls, playing various games, and drawing a fortune.
The female characters in the anime will usually dress up in a kimono, to show off their traditional Japanese clothing, while watching the fireworks.
odd couple
The protagonist pair (any gender combination) is so different in character traits and looks/size that they make an odd couple, quite noticeable in any crowd.
over the top
Both the characters and the story in this anime are completely over the top.
romantic comedy
The usually quite subtle and subdued development of the romance between the main characters is much more direct, humorous, and slapstick-based. Thus comedy meets romance.
sarcastic central character
At least one of central characters (or the even the lead) can not resist commenting on the state of the world with insightful, intelligent, and snide remarks (in a "good" way).
summer
At least one of the episodes takes place in summer. Think summer vacation, summer school, summer festival, or a visit to the beach.
summer festival
The summer festival is used to show off the female protagonists in traditional Japanese clothing - the yukata - a casual form of kimono.
The festivities include food stalls (cotton candy, candy apples, choco bananas, taiyaki), various games (scoop goldfishes), and a fireworks display.
surprisingly good
Contrary to previous speculations or in spite of reviews, some would say the anime isn`t as bad as one might have originally thought it would be.
Valentine`s Day
The day Japanese girls/women give their "loved ones" chocolate presents.
In a school setting there is quite a difference between receiving honmei-chocolate, and giri-chocolate. The former is a sign of "love" or affection, the latter is simply a "mandatory" sign of compassion towards a friend or college.
wordplay
The chars play with words. E.g. purposely or accidentally use similar-sounding but wrongly applied words in the Japanese original, leading to supposedly funny misunderstandings and confusion.
