Hyakka Ryouran: Samurai Girls is Hobby Japan's 40th anniversary mediamix project. The franchise includes a light novel series by Suzuki Akira and Niθ, published by HJ Bunko (a publishing label aimed at young adult males); a manga series by Shinano Yura published in shounen/seinen magazine Dengeki Daioh; a 4-koma web comic by Kazahana Chiruo; this anime adaption by ARMS; figurines and so forth.
The era is Heisei 20+ in the reign of the 25th Tokugawa Shogun, Keikou. In the Christian calendar, it’s a bit past 2000 in the Empire of Japan.
In the skirts of the Sacred Mount Fuji, there’s an enormous school built in a vast area. Its name is Buou Private Academy. All students are children of samurai and while encouraged to study, they spend their days preparing themselves in battles that sometimes put their life in risk.
A peaceful school at first glance, but even there a shadow of turbulence draws near: the rebellious underground activities of discontents that oppose the Tokugawa clan that rules the school. Against the dissident students, the student council executive committee formed the Toyotomi Faction and began their suppression. Now with the Toyotomi Hunting as it became known, the tyranny of the student council escalated further.
The high school student Yagyuu Muneakira who attends the Buou Private Academy and is also the assistant instructor of fencing at the Yagyuu Dojo, while a servant to the Tokunaga family, he was opposed to the excessive oppression of the Toyotomi Hunting. And before Muneakira appeared several girls carrying the names of the ancient swordsmen and generals. Is that the beginning of a commotion that will shake the History or is it—?

Categories Action Action anime usually involve a fairly straightforward story of good guys versus bad guys, where most disputes are resolved by using physical force. It often contains a lot of shooting, explosions and fighting. Alternative Present Anime that fit in the alternative present category usually have technology and society that is very similar to ours, but with differences in both, history and culture, which sometimes are blatantly obvious, but sometimes harder to place; this one can at times be very subjective. Angst A feeling of general discomfort and uneasiness is present due to either trivial or more serious reasons, often accompanied by depression.
Warning: may contain copious amounts of brooding and sighing. Asia Asia is the world`s largest and most populous continent. Boing The sound breasts make when they bounce. Size may vary, but mainly involves larger breasts in tight or otherwise sexy clothing. Partial or complete exposure may occur, usually emphasizing the boing-effect as they come out. Not capable of bouncing means no boing. Comedy Anime whose central struggle causes hilarious results. These stories are built upon funny characters, situations and events. A comedy anime is laced with humour and sets out to provoke laughter from the audience.
Japanese humour can be a bit strange to westerners, so if you`re new to this type of humour, just bear with it; it`ll most likely grow on you if you`re a fan of other kinds of comedy. Coming of Age In the strict sense the Coming of age describes a young person`s transition from adolescence to adulthood. In anime the term is used in a more general sense where the protagonists have to face a challenge, make an important decision in their life, take on responsibility, or learn a lesson, and by overcoming these obstacles they reach a higher level of maturity. Earth That big mud ball that most of us live on. Ecchi Ecchi, or etchi (エッチ), is a common Japanese word meaning "indecent", "lewd", "frisky" or "sexy", while its usage can be compared to the word "naughty". The term is used when vague sexual content, such as skimpy clothing or nudity, is prominent. Japan Last stronghold for humanity, if Tokyo falls, it`s all over. Tokyo tower will undoubtedly fall anyway. Large Breasts Focus on larger than average breasts. Pretty common in anime. Usually involves adolescent girls or fully grown women. Love Polygon A love polygon refers to a romantic relationship involving n people. Although a love triangle is not limited to just heterosexual relationships, in anime, it usually deals with two females liking one male and vice versa. Martial Arts Characterized by extensive fighting scenes employing various types of martial arts, meaning systems of codified practices and traditions of training for combat. Nudity Nudity is the state of wearing no clothing. Based on scientific research it is estimated that humans have been wearing clothing for 650,000 years. It is related to the concept of modesty and is sometimes used to refer to wearing significantly less clothing than expected by the conventions of a particular culture and situation, and in particular exposing the bare skin or intimate parts.
Especially gratuitous fanservice shows tend to show their, mostly female, characters, most often without any clothes, only hiding genitals through the means of additions like steam. Original Work: Novel Note that novel means book with words in paper, so no comics and no "visual novels", which should go under manga and dating-sim - visual Novel/erotic game respectively.
Note that it can be applied to novels as we know them but also the typical light novels for teens and young adults, which are common in Japan and aside from being short include a number of illustrations. Romance Romance describes a story that deals with love between two or more characters typically also having an optimistic ending. Romance is also a difficulty encountered when creating a harem. School Life Since a large part of the anime audience still takes part in school life or is visiting college, it is only natural to choose a setting the audience can identify with, be it elementary, middle, or high school. For the older viewers a college setting with more mature real-life problems is appropriate. And since clubs take up so much time in the lives of students, these are obviously also important. Seinen A subset of anime or manga that is generally targeted at a 18 - 25 year old male audience, but the audience can be much older with some manga aimed at businessmen well into their 40s. Slapstick Slapstick humour is generally recognized by lots of physical abuse, horseplay and practical jokes. Also often seen are impossible situations, using sounds to illustrate impossible stunts that aren`t shown on-screen and to create tension for audience anticipation. Small Breasts Focus on flat-chested (pettanko) to slightly protruding breasts, often so mockingly or humorously. Usually involves children or adolescent girls. Stereotypes Then there is the question of the character set presentation. Is it completely original, or is it your usual stereotypical character cast. Both choices have their merit, for example it would not really make much sense to reinvent the wheel for a harem anime. Fans of that genre come to expect their favourite stereotype protagonists. Sudden Girlfriend Appearance Sudden Girlfriend Appearance anime involve a sudden change in the main character`s life where (s)he suddenly gets confronted with an individual (s)he`s sexually attracted to, the two of them inevitable becoming a couple. Swordplay The act or art of using a sword or similar weapon skillfully. Tags absurdly powerful student council The student council, an ‘institution’ no one normally takes that seriously in anime, has executive powers that border on the ludicrous. ass-kicking girls The female characters in the anime are very proficient in some form of martial arts, swordplay, or gunfights. They may also have super powers. boy meets girl A classical type of plot in story writing, where the story begins with a boy meeting a girl leading to romantic development between the two. More often than not the boy loses the girl later on and has to find her again. creative censorship The TV station airing the anime does its best to remove most ecchi parts from the show, using various and original methods. Usually, an uncensored DVD is released later. However, sometimes the censorship is used intentionally to make a scene look more obscene than it actually is. excessive fanservice Content that may be suggestive yet generally pleasing will be found in abundance. Usually this is the premise of something borderline-hentai with a large amount of strong sexual themes but without any actual sex-acts taking place.

Some may even use long range weaponry (such as bows/crossbows) or magic. fighting For some reason or other one faction has to take it out on some opponent via fight or battle. Typical examples of this are all the anime with "endless pointless fighting" tag. first kiss The first kiss plays a role in this anime. Especially for the female cast this can be quite an important moment, so that stealing ones first kiss is serious for them. girl with katana At least one female protagonist is armed with a katana (Japanese sword), and uses this weapon proficiently. girls with swords Female characters with various swords as their main weapon of choice. Although the size and shape of the blade is often unique and even drastically over-sized, the wielder is almost always free from extra restraint it would be thought to inflict upon them. ink effects Visual ink effects are used, i.e. splatters on the screen. This does not refer to the use of ink by the characters themselves or something similar.
Actually `cheap` visual effects added in post processing, these become quite old and very annoying quickly. ninja maid no description set yet nopan At least one of the characters appears in the anime bereft of panties. not wimpy male lead no description set yet panty fighter Girl vs. girl combat with gratuitous up-skirt / panty shots, and clothing damage. predominantly female cast The anime features a mostly female cast, i.e. male characters are rare.
Example: A Catholic all-girls school setting. samurai girl no description set yet skimpy clothing most fit for the job When a job needs to get done you need the appropriate clothing on the appropriate persons. That calls for preferably scantily clad young ladies. Spies will dress in sexy outfits, even when the mission explicitly calls for them to not to be noticed. Female warriors will charge into battle wearing armour that does not protect the vital organs. Bridge officers on a military starship will be issued go-go boots with their uniforms. Examples are the women in VanDread, AIKa or the most famous incarnation of that tag, the Strike Witches and their precursor the Sky Girls. sudden naked girl appearance A character or group of characters are simply minding their own business, when suddenly, a naked girl appears. It does not matter how or why, but a naked someone is there. Sometimes the naked girl is not happy about this.
Usually this is a fanservice element, but not always. tsundere A character type (usually female), who is often easily agitated or combative, but other times is quite kind and caring, especially in situations involving a person they are (knowingly or unknowingly) attracted to. TV censoring The TV version is censored and later DVD/BD releases are uncensored, so the money-grubbing capitalists can make a couple more bucks at our expense. wafuku People in the series are wearing Japanese-style clothes, such as kimonos, yukatas, furisodes, hakamas etc. This will most likely apply to series that take place in Japan of the past. yuri subtext Actions between two female characters that could be taken as or misinterpreted as being amorous in nature. zettai ryouiki Japanese for "absolute area", and refers to an area of bare skin on the legs between a skirt and knee- or thigh high stockings.
