Shindou Hikaru, a 6th grader, finds an old go table in the attic of his grandfather's house. He sees some blood stains on the go table, and tries to wipe it off... when a ghost dressed in Heian period clothes pops out, and takes over his body.
The ghost happens to be Fujiwara no Sai, a member of the court during the Heian period. Sai was one of the two men who was assigned as the go tutor to the emperor. The other tutor was envious of Sai, and challenged him to a go match -- whoever wins gets to stay as the court's go master. Sai's opponent cheats during the match, and before Sai could say anything about it, the opponent accused Sai of cheating. Sai was banished from the court, and because of regret and anger, he committed suicide. But as with all unrepented souls, Sai was unable to leave the material world... until he is able to master go, and get one step closer to "kami no itte," or god's hand.

Clubs
Even though school clubs in Japan are not mandatory, there is some pressure from the social grid (e.g. fellow students, teachers) to participate in some kind of after-school activity, be it in sports or arts. Colleges also have clubs.
As a comedy element in anime, some students have joined too many clubs, and are thus constantly stressed out. There is also the element of social commentary, making it clear that you have to join a club, if you want to be part of the class. Since self-founded clubs need at least 3 members, the desperate search and advertising for new members can be cause for hilarity in anime.
Comedy
Anime whose central struggle causes hilarious results. These stories are built upon funny characters, situations and events. A comedy anime is laced with humour and sets out to provoke laughter from the audience.
Japanese humour can be a bit strange to westerners, so if you`re new to this type of humour, just bear with it; it`ll most likely grow on you if you`re a fan of other kinds of comedy.
Contemporary Fantasy
Magic and supernatural beings exist secretly in what is generally regarded as the real world. Such elements may have originated from another world. Stories where a modern-day character travels to an alternate fantasy world are not considered contemporary fantasy.
Fantasy
Magic and other supernatural forms are primary elements of plot, theme and/or setting. Distinguished from science fiction and horror by not involving scientific or macabre themes respectively, though the three genres can often overlap each other to some extent.
Historical
Historical anime have clear ties to our history and usually occur in a particular epoch.
Japan
Last stronghold for humanity, if Tokyo falls, it`s all over. Tokyo tower will undoubtedly fall anyway.
Original Work: Manga
Manga is the lifeblood that drives the anime industry. Everything and its mother is based on manga. However! There are exceptions where the manga was not the basis for the anime.
It`s common practice to make manga adaptations of many popular anime, there`s a manga based on Evangelion, and two (one shounen and one shoujo) based on each of Escaflowne and Mahou Tsukai Tai. Also it`s quite common to release manga and anime versions of a story in parallel, for instance Nadesico and Shoujo Kakumei Utena. There are also cases where an anime continues in a manga, or reverse, as in the case of Angel Beats! and Angel Beats: Heaven`s Door.
Plot Continuity
Consistency of the characteristics of persons, plot, objects, places and events seen by the viewer.
A single linear focused plot is highly continuous.
A truly random plot is highly discontinuous.
School Life
Since a large part of the anime audience still takes part in school life or is visiting college, it is only natural to choose a setting the audience can identify with, be it elementary, middle, or high school. For the older viewers a college setting with more mature real-life problems is appropriate. And since clubs take up so much time in the lives of students, these are obviously also important.
Shounen
A style of anime and manga intended for boys, characterized by high-action, often humorous plots featuring male protagonists. The camaraderie between boys or men on sports teams, fighting squads, etc. is often emphasized. Unrealistically attractive female characters are also common (see fanservice), but are not a requirement. The art style of shounen also tends to be less flowery than that of shoujo.
Sports
Sports anime revolves around a recreational physical activity or skill. In addition they often adhere to certain genre conventions, the emphasis on training and practice in preparation for competition, characters desire for self improvement, and pursuit of a specific goal.
Time: Past
Anime that takes place in the past or clearly seems to take place in the past in case of an alternative universe. This category should almost always go together with one of its sub-categories, because the past can either be a depiction of a historical event(s) or not, in which case it would be alternative past.
Time: Present
Somewhere between past and future

anything can be awesome
Sometimes normal just doesn`t cut it, you need to make it awesome, no matter how mundane it is.
Let`s throw in some gripping orchestral music, lighting changes, different camera angles, something! Don`t write like a man, write like an Evil Overlord! Exaggerate your expressions and gestures, speak with excessive intonation, and if all else fails, throw in some close-ups, slow motion, and Ominous Latin Chanting! With practice, even you can turn something like eating chips into an epic battle of light and dark.
battle of wits
There is some intellectual battle between the characters. They each might attempt to discern what the other knows and/or could be planning. Then, rather than simply relying on the use of raw power, try to deduce an effective strategy to foil their opponent(s). The battle of wits can be in the center of the intrigue or just a side story. Examples: Death Note, Code Geass, Valkyria Chronicles
career anime
The kind of anime which shows the career of a character, usually from the beginning.

competition
Some sort of confrontation occurs in this show. The protagonists "duke it out" via various competitions.
epic
Epic is all about scale. Whether it is the vastness of the anime`s universe, the grandeur of the protagonist`s heroic journey, or the anime`s over-the-top, pulse-pounding visual style--when the anime becomes larger than life and draws the viewer in with an overwhelming sense of awe, it can be described simply as EPIC.
ghost
Ethereal being, mostly transparent, usually does not interact with matter (e.g. can pass through walls). Remnant "essence" of a human being that cannot pass to the spirit world for some reason, e.g. a traumatic death traps the ghost to a certain place on Earth.
go board game
Deceptively simple (rule-wise), yet quite complex strategic board game for two players. Called "igo" in Japanese.

It`s a classic, YOU MUST SEE IT!
overlapping ED music
Part of the ending theme music plays during the show, rather than being entirely contained in the repetitive ending video.
predominantly male cast
The anime features a mostly male cast, i.e. female characters are rare.
Example: Reverse harem setting with a plethora of bishounen.

rivalry
Quite broadly used term describing a conflict, contest, struggle, or opposition of some sort.
Typical examples: The mostly comedic rivalry for the love of a protagonist in a harem anime (love polygon), the more "mindless" battles between wannabe delinquents in a school fighting anime, or the struggle between good & evil in an epic conflict for world domination.
serious business
For some people it`s just a card- or boardgame. For others it is not just a matter of life and death - it`s much more important than that.
Serious business basically describes a situation, when a show revolves around an activity where a sizable portion of the in-series population takes it far more seriously than it should. If something`s popularity rivals that of Elvis, or if there are mainstream schools ded to it instead of teaching reading, writing, and arithmetic; it`s serious business.
surprisingly good
Contrary to previous speculations or in spite of reviews, some would say the anime isn`t as bad as one might have originally thought it would be.
Weekly Shounen Jump
Weekly Shounen Jump is a Japanese manga magazine, released on weekly basis, features various mangas and targets a young male audience.
Add this tag when the anime bases on a manga and that manga was serialized in this magazine.
zero to hero
With his first appearance, this character is getting his ass kicked by nearly everyone, but as the plot continues, through training (mental or physical) or instant power-up, he changes into a killing/fighting/winning machine.
The best example: Makunouchi Ippo from Hajime no Ippo series.
