Hirose Takuma is a blind young male high school student, though the cause for his blindness is undetermined. After his mother died an unexpected death, it left a deep emotional scar on him, which caused him to become very lonely and reserved. Due to this, Takuma moves from the city out into a rural area to live with his uncle, and enrolled into a the village high school. At his new school, he meets several new girls, though three of whom he gets to know the most out of anyone else. They are Kohinata Hayami, a girl dislike by all her class, who pushes Takuma's attempts at friendship away, the excessively obliging Kagura Hinata, who seems to have a hidden agenda, and the cheerful and mysterious Otoha, who wears a school uniform, but never seems to attend. As Takuma interacts with these girls, his medical condition gradually begins to heal.
Categories
Angst
A feeling of general discomfort and uneasiness is present due to either trivial or more serious reasons, often accompanied by depression.
Asia
Asia is the world`s largest and most populous continent.
Comedy
Anime whose central struggle causes hilarious results. These stories are built upon funny characters, situations and events. A comedy anime is laced with humour and sets out to provoke laughter from the audience.
Japanese humour can be a bit strange to westerners, so if you`re new to this type of humour, just bear with it; it`ll most likely grow on you if you`re a fan of other kinds of comedy.
Coming of Age
In the strict sense the Coming of age describes a young person`s transition from adolescence to adulthood. In anime the term is used in a more general sense where the protagonists have to face a challenge, make an important decision in their life, take on responsibility, or learn a lesson, and by overcoming these obstacles they reach a higher level of maturity.
Daily Life
The antics of the protagonists do not take place in some exotic setting or time, but in everyday life. When not "at the job" this means getting up in the morning, making meals, house cleaning, going shopping or out to eat, visiting the bath house or spa, leisure activities in the spare time, etc. The time "on the job" for students is School Life, for others working in their profession. Daily Life is basically a synonym for everything normal, repetitive, and trivial happening to your average person.
Earth
That big mud ball that most of us live on.
Ecchi
Ecchi, or etchi (エッチ), is a common Japanese word meaning "indecent", "lewd", "frisky" or "sexy", while its usage can be compared to the word "naughty". The term is used when vague sexual content, such as skimpy clothing or nudity, is prominent.
Fantasy
Magic and other supernatural forms are primary elements of plot, theme and/or setting. Distinguished from science fiction and horror by not involving scientific or macabre themes respectively, though the three genres can often overlap each other to some extent.
Harem
Harem anime is when three or more females that for some reason are in the presence of one male as a central plot element. Generally, both the girls` looks and personalities vary a lot, and most of them are interested in the one guy. Sometimes, none of the girls are really interested at first, so the protagonist has to build relationships with them. Ecchi pretty much can`t be avoided, and it`s typical to see the protagonist stamped as a pervert by some of the girls, whether he is one or not. A lot of harem anime were originally Visual Novels, since most Visual Novels revolve around controlling this one guy, trying to build a relationship with several girls.
In a story where there is one female and several good looking males it`s a "reverse harem" or "male harem".
Japan
Last stronghold for humanity, if Tokyo falls, it`s all over. Tokyo tower will undoubtedly fall anyway.
Middle School
Also referred to as junior high school (or lower-secondary education; compulsory in Japan) covers the grades seven, eight, and nine. The students are typically twelve to fifteen years old.
Anime with school setting centre on Middle School students when younger, possibly more naive and `innocent` (less worldly wise) characters are required.
Original Work: Dating Sim - Visual Novel
The two terms are similar yet different, however, the fact that they look and `feel` the same outweighs the technical differences. For clarification, visual novels are considered a sub-genre of adventure games and the term does not cover simulations. While the two genres often share a common visual presentation, dating sims are sometimes considered to be more statistically based than the "choose your own adventure" style of visual novels; basically, the choices you make might change something else than just the story arc (or your next porn pic). Dating sims can involve several technical elements such as a time limit, several statistics such as looks and charm which can be boosted through exercise, or an "attraction meter" which can increase or decrease depending on one`s decisions.
Original Work: Erotic Game
An erotic game (eroge) is a Japanese video or computer game that features erotic content, usually in the form of anime-style artwork. In English, eroge are often called hentai games in keeping with the English slang definition of hentai. This is sometimes shortened to H games. In Japan, eroge are also referred to as 18 games. Most erotic games are visual novels or dating sims but are not limited to them.
Any anime adaptation of a game that contains (or had a version than contains) adult content (generally sex scenes), regardless of how some fanboys blabber on how "the story in that visual novel was too good to be labelled as porn!", should definitely get this category added under them. This should make it pretty clear as to what is an erotic game and what is not.
Original Work: Game
Based on an interactive (even if minimally so) form of entertainment software, generally available for PCs, consoles or arcade machines.
Plot Continuity
Consistency of the characteristics of persons, plot, objects, places and events seen by the viewer.
A single linear focused plot is highly continuous.
A truly random plot is highly discontinuous.
Romance
Romance describes a story that deals with love between two or more characters typically also having an optimistic ending.
School Life
Since a large part of the anime audience still takes part in school life or is visiting college, it is only natural to choose a setting the audience can identify with, be it elementary, middle, or high school. For the older viewers a college setting with more mature real-life problems is appropriate. And since clubs take up so much time in the lives of students, these are obviously also important.
Seinen
A subset of anime or manga that is generally targeted at a 18 - 25 year old male audience, but the audience can be much older with some manga aimed at businessmen well into their 40s.
Slapstick
Slapstick humour is generally recognized by lots of physical abuse, horseplay and practical jokes. Also often seen are impossible situations, using sounds to illustrate impossible stunts that aren`t shown on-screen and to create tension for audience anticipation.
Stereotypes
Then there is the question of the character set presentation. Is it completely original, or is it your usual stereotypical character cast. Both choices have their merit, for example it would not really make much sense to reinvent the wheel for a harem anime. Fans of that genre come to expect their favourite stereotype protagonists.
Sudden Girlfriend Appearance
Sudden Girlfriend Appearance anime involve a sudden change in the main character`s life where (s)he suddenly gets confronted with an individual (s)he`s sexually attracted to, the two of them inevitable becoming a couple.
Time: Present
Somewhere between past and future
Tragedy
Tragedy is a form of drama characterized by seriousness and dignity, usually involving a conflict between a character and some higher power, such as the law, the gods, fate, or society.
Traps
A male character often mistaken as a female by other characters and/or the viewer due to his feminine appearance, behaviour, and/or language (regardless of his intention).
Violence
Physical force against self or other, compelling action against one`s will on pain of being hurt.
Tags
amnesia
Loss of memory.
Used as story element, gradually revealing a protagonist`s past that had been forgotten. Usually revealing a terribly gruesome happening.
beach episode
Also known as umi episode. Every anime has to have them, episodes in which the characters for whatever reason end up going to the sea, ocean, random island or the local pond.
Usually used for fanservice purpose as it gives the staff the opportunity to draw the characters in swimsuits and raise the DVD sales.
The cheap version is the pool episode.
Other marginally less used variants of this are the onsen episode and the sentou episode, used when it is too cold for a beach/pool episode.
beautiful places
The anime features many awe-inspiring, beautiful locations. The background artists put special effort in creating wondrously detailed anime backgrounds.
befriend attack
One character practically "pounces a hug" on another character.
Used as comedy element (slapstick) to demonstrate the exuberant affection of the (usually female) "pouncing" protagonist.
blindness
One of the protagonists in the anime is blind, and thus has to cope with the resulting everyday problems.
breast fondling
Part of the slapstick comedy in ecchi anime between female characters. E.g. a girl envious of another girl`s bust size may tease the latter via fondling. Usually playful and mischievous, not sexual.
Alas, now the tag can also imply "boob grabbing", where a male character will either accidentally or intentionally touch the breasts of a female. The former is a comedy element, as in "accidental infringement", the latter can be interpreted as a form of harassment.
breathtaking vistas
An amazing view of nature, of artificially sculpted landscapes (i.e. gardens), or of a cityscape.
countryside
The anime takes place far from the any densely populated areas like cities, i.e. out in the suburbs, in the countryside with many fields and forests.
creepy laugh
At least one character in the show inexplicably and repetitively seems to have the urgent need to laugh in a creepy, loud and usually very annoying way.
For male bad guys this seems to be a must, but some of the uppity (rich) female characters use the laugh as part of their condescending attitude as well.
dodge the hug
The more exuberant (usually female) characters will perform a pounce when trying to hug the person they adore. The "victim" learns to side-step these "attacks" though after a while.
drama
Any situation or series of events having vivid, emotional and conflicting results.
great opening
This anime contains a wonderful use of animation and/or vocals during the opening theme.
klutz
As part of the slapstick comedy in anime there often is a character (usually female), who is particularly clumsy, i.e. tripping, bumping into objects, or dropping things. This lack of physical coordination is thought of as endearing.
lingerie
The exposure of frilly (female) underwear plays a part in this anime. This could either be an ecchi element (think "paper clothes"), or may well be "job" clothing (e.g. a kinky super-heroine outfit).
This often also goes along with the shopping for lingerie, i.e. additional ecchi potential.
nosebleed
A comedy element: It is said that Asians, Japanese in this case, are more prone to nose bleeding when stressed or emotionally excited. As that may be, this physical display of excitement / emotions is used extensively in anime comedy.
Typically a male character will over-react to the presence of a bishoujo (beautiful girl), usually embarrassing himself and her. In rare cases there are also female characters who nosebleed, e.g. in the presence of a bishounen (handsome youth). The latter is actually funnier, because the female char suddenly loses her composure and poise.
Increasing the visual impact, "explosive nosebleeds" have become very popular in slapstick comedy.
school swimsuit
At least one female character (or the luckily rare male) wears this type of swimsuit, usually one or several times. It can also be part of their standard (battle) clothing (Makai Tenshi Jibril).
A more specific type of swimsuit.
Normally worn at schools though sometimes also worn at beaches when the characters feels this to be easier, forgot to buy a normal swimsuit of their own or wants to give some fan service to those that like school swimsuits better than regular swimsuits.
In ecchi or hentai anime, a swimsuit of this type sometimes serves censoring purposes when characters take a bath.
sense of foreboding
The anime starts off quietly, everything seems to be fine, but from episode to episode the signs that something ominous is about to happen increase. E.g. a typical mystery setting.
spineless protagonist
Supposedly the (male) protagonist is lacking backbone, and does not stand up for himself, always evading the tough decisions that should be made.
summer festival
The summer festival is used to show off the female protagonists in traditional Japanese clothing - the yukata - a casual form of kimono.
The festivities include food stalls (cotton candy, candy apples, choco bananas, taiyaki), various games (scoop goldfishes), and a fireworks display.
tear jerker
Parts of the anime are so emotionally moving or sad that they bring tears to your eyes.
train
The rail-road bound means of transportation plays a part in this anime (plot device). Either simply as a vehicle to get from place to place, or possibly as trigger for an important memory from the past.
tsundere
A character type (usually female), who is often easily agitated or combative, but other times is quite kind and caring, especially in situations involving a person they are (knowingly or unknowingly) attracted to.
Note: There is a "male tsundere" tag for males.
unconventional fanservice
A type of fanservice that appears out of innocence or ordinary situations- such as body movements (or the movement of bodily parts), showing of undergarments, or brief nudity relative to non-sexual intentions. While most likely reoccurring and attracting attention, such may not intended to do so to the extreme extent as normal fanservice.
very emotional
The anime takes the viewer on an emotional roller-coaster ride, with joyful but also very sad moments.
violent retribution for ecchi behaviour
One of the central vehicles of slapstick comedy with ecchi elements.
When one char misbehaves, or at least is perceived to do so, he/she gets reprimanded or whacked by another char - typically a tsundere - for ecchi (slightly perverted) behaviour. In this case it is *not* a reaction to *accidental* infringement, like tripping into cleavage.
As Asu no Yoichi! shows, the supposed "ecchi behaviour" of the male protagonist can also be over-interpreted by a tsundere. E.g. getting whacked for a nosebleed, when looking at a cute girl.
