Action
Action anime usually involve a fairly straightforward story of good guys versus bad guys, where most disputes are resolved by using physical force. It often contains a lot of shooting, explosions and fighting.
Dystopia
A dystopia is a fictional society that is the antithesis of utopia. A dystopic society is characterised by negative traits the author chooses to illustrate, such as poverty, dictatorship, violence, and/or pollution. The only trait common to all dystopias is that they are negative and undesirable societies, but many commonalities are found across dystopian societies. In general, dystopias are seen as visions of "dangerous and alienating future societies," often criticizing current trends in culture. It is a culture where the condition of life is "extremely bad," as from deprivation, oppression, or terror.
Most dystopias impose severe social restrictions on the characters` lives.
Fantasy World
A fantasy world is a type of imaginary world, part of a fictional universe. Typical worlds involve, but are not limited to magic or magical abilities and a medieval theme. Some worlds may be a parallel world tenuously connected to Earth via magical portals or items; a fictional Earth set in the remote past or future; or an entirely independent world set in another universe. Many fantasy worlds draw heavily on real world history, geography and sociology, and also on folklore.
Gunfights
Fights where two or more parties are firing guns at one another.
Horror
The horror cinematic genre is characterized by the attempt to make the viewer experience dread, fear, terror, or horror. Often their plots involve the intrusion of an evil force, event or personage, sometimes of supernatural origin, on the mundane world and the consequences thereof.
Human Enhancement
The enhancement of humans can take various forms: It can be something comparatively non-intrusive as a power-up drug, a form of machine implantation or cyberization ("SAC Solid State Society"), or outright - possibly atrocious - genetic manipulation ("Ao no 6-gou"). Plot-wise enhanced protagonists in anime usually have to pay a price for their enhancements, be it physical or mental.
Mafia
The Mafia is a secret crime group working in many parts of the world that was created in Italy more than 200 years ago. The mafia make money from crime. They make billions of dollars a year from such crimes as making and selling illegal drugs, money laundering, from stealing, gambling and prostitution.

Plot Continuity
Consistency of the characteristics of persons, plot, objects, places and events seen by the viewer.
A single linear focused plot is highly continuous.
A truly random plot is highly discontinuous.

SciFi
Science fiction stories usually focus on how situations could be different in the future when we are more technologically advanced; due to either our own achievements or having met with other civilizations whom we have learned from.

Tragedy
Tragedy is a form of drama characterized by seriousness and dignity, usually involving a conflict between a character and some higher power, such as the law, the gods, fate, or society.
Underworld
The underworld we talk about here is not to be confused with the place where people are believed to go after they die, but the general term for organized crime. It is a shady world, unknown to most people, where illegal things like murder, smuggling, drug dealing and similar are happening daily. Groups known to be acting in this world are for example the mafia or the yakuza.
Violence
Physical force against self or other, compelling action against one`s will on pain of being hurt.

anime noir
Following characteristics are typical for noir:
A pessimistic world-view, crime, murder, an anti-hero as protagonist, femme fatale, detective, no escape, questionable moral, corruption, sad, tragic, no happy end.
noir (adj.) french for "black". The definition for genre "film noir" is somewhat blurry. Modern (neo-)noir movie examples: SinCity, L.A. Confidential, Collateral, ... Anime examples: Noir, Gunslinger Girl, ...
assassin
Any variety of highly trained and very stealthy killer with the ability to utilize any object within their surroundings as a deadly weapon. They are often hireable to take out hits (or targets) designated by a client (or temporary employer) for a predetermined fee. Not all assassins work solo and may have a partner or even a team of more than two members.
Not all have motivation for killing, as some may just do so for sport and personal reward as well as the thrill of being evasive and superior to their thought of captors.
awesome storyline
The storyline is intriguingly crafted: The suspense will keep you at the edge of your seat, the plot twists will very much surprise, the character development is both convincing, and entertaining.
This is how anime should be!

Engrish
Engrish is actually a mispronunciation of English, as can be the result of someone who does not have English as their primary language of origin (such as Japanese or Chinese). Occasionally characters in the original Japanese dialogue version of an anime will speak in English... however; this often still requires the assistance of subtitles, for while the words are meant to be said in English, the sentence structure and letter pronunciation may still be strongly relative to the person`s primary language.
flashback
The characters remember things from their past triggering a flashback. The anime either repeats scenes from previous episodes (danger of too many "fillers"), or actually shows new footage from very old memories.
henshin
Japanese for "transformation" (metamorphosis or disguise).
A "henshin anime" is any anime, where the characters or their costumes transform, such as Sailor Moon. The henshin switches on the character`s special powers, and is frequently accompanied by a costume change. Often the change of clothing is the only outward indicator that the character has changed.
Most henshin heroes have a special item which they use to change into their heroic form. These items are usually activated by a command phrase (which is often in Engrish, for some reason), triggering a transformation sequence.

in medias res
In medias res, also medias in res (Latin for "into the midst of affairs (lit. into mid-affairs)"), refers to a literary and artistic technique where the narrative starts in the middle of the story instead of from its beginning. The characters, setting, and conflict are often introduced through a series of flashbacks or through characters relating past events to each other.
Probably originating from an oral tradition, the technique is a convention of epic poetry, one of the earliest and most prominent examples in Western literature being Homer`s Odyssey and Iliad. Virgil`s Aeneid began the tradition in literature of imitating Homer, continued in Torquato Tasso`s Jerusalem Delivered, John Milton`s Paradise Lost and "Inferno" from Dante`s Divine Comedy. George Lucas`s Star Wars saga was told using in medias res.
large ambition
One or more characters have an ultimate goal.
Most episodes portray events that get the character closer to reaching their goal or dream, often resulting in good character development. Alternately, the majority of the episodes may only go into more detail on why the character has that goal.

powerful main character
Characters that are so powerful that they can tear apart their foes with ease. These powers may well start off relativity weak, gaining in power as the anime progresses.
protection complex
A main character will be practically obsessed with the protection of one or more other characters. This desire to protect may be so strong, it could unconsciously subject and influence the character`s attitude and behavior towards situations or other people in general. The obsessive protector will feel it`s their mission in life to protect the other character, possibly viewing themselves as worthless or a failure if that single duty is to be slightly off from perfection.
revenge
A primary factor that drives the plot forward.

supernatural elements
This anime contains aspects that are drawn from a realm beyond the normal. This may be immortality, telekinesis or any other element that cannot be found in a realistic world.
surprisingly good
Contrary to previous speculations or in spite of reviews, some would say the anime isn`t as bad as one might have originally thought it would be.
timeskip
The plot features at least one skip or jump in time.
Example: A skip from the present into the past, or time skips in increments, e.g. every hour there is a timeskip by a day.
undead
Things such as humans or animals that are deceased but reanimate to seemingly "live again".
Although usually viewed as evil-doing beings of darkness, it`s common that not all undead things necessarily be evil, and the protagonist may even turn out to be some type of ghost or breed of vampire. Other examples of the undead include zombies, skeletons, ghouls, wraiths, spectres, liches, ghasts, mummies, wights, draugs (draugr) and Frankenstein monsters.
Zombies, being the most common when referencing "undead", are often found in the horror genre in mass numbers. They usually seek living flesh as sustenance while lacking the intelligence and motor functions they had prior to death. The reanimation commonly occurs when a living person is killed and fed upon by another that is already a zombie. In other cases, a mere bite or scratch by an undead will infect the victim like a disease, thus causing them a painful death and haste reanimation.
