Two brothers lose their mother to an incurable disease. With the power of "alchemy", they use taboo knowledge to resurrect her. The process fails, and as a toll for using this type of alchemy, the older brother, Edward Elric loses his left leg while the younger brother, Alphonse Elric loses his entire body. To save his brother, Edward sacrifices his right arm and is able to affix his brother's soul to a suit of armor. With the help of a family friend, Edward receives metal limbs - "automail" - to replace his lost ones. With that, Edward vows to search for the Philosopher's Stone to return the brothers to their original bodies, even if it means becoming a "State Alchemist", one who uses their alchemy for the military.
Categories Action Action anime usually involve a fairly straightforward story of good guys versus bad guys, where most disputes are resolved by using physical force. It often contains a lot of shooting, explosions and fighting. Adventure Adventures are exciting stories, with new experiences or exotic locales. Adventures are designed to provide an action-filled, energetic experience for the viewer. Rather than the predominant emphasis on violence and fighting that is found in pure action anime, however, the viewer of adventures can live vicariously through the travels, conquests, explorations, creation of empires, struggles and situations that confront the main characters, actual historical figures or protagonists. Under the category of adventures, we can include traditional swashbucklers, serialized films, and historical spectacles, searches or expeditions for lost continents, "jungle" and "desert" epics, treasure hunts and quests, disaster films, and heroic journeys or searches for the unknown. Adventure films are often set in an historical period, and may include adapted stories of historical or literary adventure heroes, kings, battles, rebellion, or piracy. Conspiracy The conspiracy thriller (or paranoid thriller) is a sub-genre of the thriller which flourished in the 1970s in the US (and was echoed in other parts of the world) in the wake of a number of high-profile scandals and controversies (most notably Vietnam, the assassination of President Kennedy, Chappaquiddick and Watergate), and which exposed what many people regarded as the clandestine machinations and conspiracies beneath the orderly fabric of political life. The protagonists of conspiracy thrillers are often journalists or amateur investigators who find themselves (often inadvertently) pulling on a small thread which unravels a vast conspiracy that ultimately goes "all the way to the top". Contemporary Fantasy Magic and supernatural beings exist secretly in what is generally regarded as the real world. Such elements may have originated from another world. Stories where a modern-day character travels to an alternate fantasy world are not considered contemporary fantasy. Fantasy Magic and other supernatural forms are primary elements of plot, theme and/or setting. Distinguished from science fiction and horror by not involving scientific or macabre themes respectively, though the three genres can often overlap each other to some extent. Fantasy World A fantasy world is a type of imaginary world, part of a fictional universe. Typical worlds involve, but are not limited to magic or magical abilities and a medieval theme. Some worlds may be a parallel world tenuously connected to Earth via magical portals or items; a fictional Earth set in the remote past or future; or an entirely independent world set in another universe. Many fantasy worlds draw heavily on real world history, geography and sociology, and also on folklore. Gunfights Fights where two or more parties are firing guns at one another. Magic In a traditional Fantasy anime with medieval setting, the lack of technology is "compensated" by the introduction of the supernatural, i.e. spell-casting, magic wands, and magic circles. In another setting long-lost technology may be so advanced that it is mistaken for magic (Arthur C. Clarke: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic"). See also related tag: science and magic coexist. Martial Arts Characterized by extensive fighting scenes employing various types of martial arts, meaning systems of codified practices and traditions of training for combat. Military The anime concerns an organised armed force, and its members. Said body should have both the equipment and hierarchy found in military groups, and should ideally be actively utilising their power against an opponent. Characters are either employed as professional soldiers or enlisted on a volunteer basis, for ideological reasons. Original Work: Manga Manga is the lifeblood that drives the anime industry. Everything and its mother is based on manga. However! There are exceptions where the manga was not the basis for the anime. It`s common practice to make manga adaptations of many popular anime, there`s a manga based on Evangelion, and two (one shounen and one shoujo) based on each of Escaflowne and Mahou Tsukai Tai. Also it`s quite common to release manga and anime versions of a story in parallel, for instance Nadesico and Shoujo Kakumei Utena. There are also cases where an anime continues in a manga, or reverse, as in the case of Angel Beats! and Angel Beats: Heaven`s Door. Plot Continuity Consistency of the characteristics of persons, plot, objects, places and events seen by the viewer. A single linear focused plot is highly continuous. A truly random plot is highly discontinuous. Shounen A style of anime and manga intended for boys, characterized by high-action, often humorous plots featuring male protagonists. The camaraderie between boys or men on sports teams, fighting squads, etc. is often emphasized. Unrealistically attractive female characters are also common (see fanservice), but are not a requirement. The art style of shounen also tends to be less flowery than that of shoujo. Slapstick Slapstick humour is generally recognized by lots of physical abuse, horseplay and practical jokes. Also often seen are impossible situations, using sounds to illustrate impossible stunts that aren`t shown on-screen and to create tension for audience anticipation. Super Deformed A caricature style often seen in anime when the character shows extreme emotions, like fear, anger, happiness, surprise, or shame. Seen as cute, as part of humorous comedy. The character`s face suddenly turns into a simplified version, the body will usually also deform into that of a small child (oversized head, short limbs, extra-large tears). Super Power Be it an ancient Greek Hercules, a cybernetic muscle-man, or a fourteen year-old girl in a mini-skirted sailor suit. As long as they have super powers, they`re in the show. Tragedy Tragedy is a form of drama characterized by seriousness and dignity, usually involving a conflict between a character and some higher power, such as the law, the gods, fate, or society. Violence Physical force against self or other, compelling action against one`s will on pain of being hurt. Tags a god am I Usually when a character gains powers above that of the rest of the world, or most of it, he starts to believe it is his destiny to lead the human race or at least part of it. This is when the god-complex is kicking in, often drawing him far from his initial (good) intentions.
A device that many anime villains fall prey to. alchemy Alchemy is the "art of transformation" or "transmutation" (the art of sacrificing the matter of certain objects for the creation of something else), and is a historical science of philosophy. awesome animation Describes the style of an animation production that deems itself respectfully noteworthy for its impressive uniqueness of appearance and attention, emphasis, or exaggeration to all or specific characteristics, constructions and details that make it so recognizable. awesome character development no description set yet awesome fight scenes The fighting sequences are really amazing. awesome storyline The storyline is intriguingly crafted: The suspense will keep you at the edge of your seat, the plot twists will very much surprise, the character development is both convincing, and entertaining.
This is how anime should be! bittersweet An anime that is, at the same time, bitter and sweet. In other words, it expresses the conflicting concepts of pain and pleasure through emotions such as melancholy. Said emotions can be either sad or joyful, and oftentimes both sad and joyful at once. brothers Two siblings, both of them of male gender, are present in this anime. deep plot Plot has some surprises for inquiring minds. equivalent exchange The first law of alchemy is equivalent exchange. In order to create something, something of equal value must also be sacrificed. In those days, we really believed that to be the world`s one, and only, truth. European stylized The anime is set in a fictional Europe. Imagine an architectural mix of London, Paris, Rome, Berlin, Prague, and other cities in the 19th century. facial distortion The characters face are exaggerated into a misshape, deformed, and almost warped. Used as comedy element to express extreme mood swings.
Differing from "Super Deformed", here only the face changes to an extreme degree, not the whole body of the protagonist. great soundtrack The anime soundtrack is noteworthy. great supporting character One or more of the supporting cast is quite memorable. guy shorter than girl He is short, she is tall, it`s destiny. height complex The main character is easily irritated and becomes angry when someone calls him short. magic circles A circle used to contain magical energy and/or to provide magical protection. It can be drawn (with chalk etc.) or it can just spontaneously appear as part of the spell/ritual. maturing character One of the character grows mature along the events shown in this anime. The process may be mental and/or physical. mechanical limbs no description set yet philosopher`s stone The philosopher`s stone, reputed to be hard as stone and malleable as wax, is a legendary alchemical tool, supposedly capable of turning base metals into gold; it was also sometimes believed to be an elixir of life, useful for rejuvenation and possibly for achieving immortality. remake This anime is a remake of a previously released story, anime, or movie. seven deadly sins The Seven Deadly Sins, also known as the Capital Vices or Cardinal Sins, are a classification of the most objectionable vices that have been "around" since early Christian times to educate and instruct followers concerning the (immoral) fallen man`s tendency to sin. These sins are: "Lust", "Gluttony", "Greed", "Sloth", "Wrath", "Envy", and "Pride". travelling adventure The main protagonist will usually travel from place to place, accompanied by a group of eccentric, quirky characters, experiencing many adventures — often one per episode. walking armour A seemingly empty armour (usually ones that knights used to wear, such as plate armour) that comes to life.
Most of the time roaming ghosts, spirits or souls overtake and use them as a physical vessel, but in some instances they are embedded into the armour - though not always consensually.
There is also a possibility that an animated armour is powered by a magical spell or just complex mechanical constructs.
Without the need of bodily functions they are often used as guards. who wants to live forever There`s no time for us. There`s no place for us. What is this thing that builds our dreams yet slips away from us.
Immortality, the wish of many, the curse of few.
While initially this seems to be the best prospect ever, eventually the bad outweighs the good and the immortal character outlives his friends, lovers and everybody else he knows. What awaits an immortal is an eternity of wandering, always keen on staying hidden, never resting for too long in one place, trying to avoid new friendships as those new friends will grow old and die as well. And if somebody is really hated by fate, he doesn`t even get to grow up before becoming immortal, staying trapped in a child`s body forever.
Living for centuries and having become disillusioned with the prospect of eternal life, many, if not most immortals wish for nothing else than to end their life.
