In this world, there exist people with special abilities to manipulate objects and transform those objects into other objects. These people are known as alchemist. However, this manipulation process does not come without cost, as the basic alchemy rules stated that something with equivalent cost is needed to perform the manipulation. The main character is a famous alchemist named Edward Elric, who loses his little brother Alphonse in an accident. Edward manages to contain his brother's soul in a large piece of armor suit. But by doing so Edward loses his arm and leg, so now they are on a journey to regain their original bodies.

Action Action anime usually involve a fairly straightforward story of good guys versus bad guys, where most disputes are resolved by using physical force. It often contains a lot of shooting, explosions and fighting. Adventure Adventures are exciting stories, with new experiences or exotic locales. Adventures are designed to provide an action-filled, energetic experience for the viewer. Rather than the predominant emphasis on violence and fighting that is found in pure action anime, however, the viewer of adventures can live vicariously through the travels, conquests, explorations, creation of empires, struggles and situations that confront the main characters, actual historical figures or protagonists. Under the category of adventures, we can include traditional swashbucklers, serialized films, and historical spectacles, searches or expeditions for lost continents, "jungle" and "desert" epics, treasure hunts and quests, disaster films, and heroic journeys or searches for the unknown. Adventure films are often set in an historical period, and may include adapted stories of historical or literary adventure heroes, kings, battles, rebellion, or piracy. Angst A feeling of general discomfort and uneasiness is present due to either trivial or more serious reasons, often accompanied by depression.
Warning: may contain copious amounts of brooding and sighing. Anthropomorphism Anthropomorphism is the attribution of uniquely human characteristics to non-human beings, inanimate objects, or natural or supernatural phenomena. If it`s an animal or an object (AI excluded) and it speaks and/or does other human-like things (dresses up) then we`re dealing with anthropomorphism. Comedy Anime whose central struggle causes hilarious results. These stories are built upon funny characters, situations and events. A comedy anime is laced with humour and sets out to provoke laughter from the audience.
Japanese humour can be a bit strange to westerners, so if you`re new to this type of humour, just bear with it; it`ll most likely grow on you if you`re a fan of other kinds of comedy. Dark Fantasy Focus set on darker themes in a fantasy setting, sometimes leaning towards horror elements. Bleak and pessimistic tones often dominate. Dark supernatural beings like vampires may play a significant role. Earth That big mud ball that most of us live on. Europe Europe is, by convention, one of the world`s seven traditional continents. It`s also home of medieval castles which are quite often featured in anime. Fantasy Imaginative or fanciful work, especially one dealing with supernatural elements and themes. Fantasy World A fantasy world is a type of imaginary world, part of a fictional universe. Typical worlds involve, but are not limited to magic or magical abilities and a medieval theme. Some worlds may be a parallel world tenuously connected to Earth via magical portals or items; a fictional Earth set in the remote past or future; or an entirely independent world set in another universe. Many fantasy worlds draw heavily on real world history, geography and sociology, and also on folklore. Germany Germany is a country in Central Europe. Gunfights Fights where two or more parties are firing guns at one another. Horror The horror cinematic genre is characterized by the attempt to make the viewer experience dread, fear, terror, or horror. Often their plots involve the intrusion of an evil force, event or personage, sometimes of supernatural origin, on the mundane world and the consequences thereof. Magic In a traditional Fantasy anime with medieval setting, the lack of technology is "compensated" by the introduction of the supernatural, i.e. spell-casting, magic wands, and magic circles.
In another setting long-lost technology may be so advanced that it is mistaken for magic (Arthur C. Clarke: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic"). See also related tag: science and magic coexist. Military The anime concerns an organised armed force, and its members. Said body should have both the equipment and hierarchy found in military groups, and should ideally be actively utilising their power against an opponent. Characters are either employed as professional soldiers or enlisted on a volunteer basis, for ideological reasons. Original Work: Manga Manga is the lifeblood that drives the anime industry. Everything and its mother is based on manga. However! There are exceptions where the manga was not the basis for the anime.
It`s common practice to make manga adaptations of many popular anime, there`s a manga based on Evangelion, and two (one shounen and one shoujo) based on each of Escaflowne and Mahou Tsukai Tai. Also it`s quite common to release manga and anime versions of a story in parallel, for instance Nadesico and Shoujo Kakumei Utena. There are also cases where an anime continues in a manga, as in the case of Angel Beats! and Angel Beats: Heaven`s Door, or reverse. Parallel Universe Parallel universe/world or alternative reality is a self-contained separate reality coexisting with our own. Because "alternative reality" sometimes implies that the reality is a variant of our own, like for example a mirror world, we`ll use the term "Parallel Universe" which is more general, without any connotations implying a relationship (or lack thereof) with our own universe (meaning a fantasy world can just as well have an alternative reality, doesn`t need to be our reality). To put it more simply, this category is to show if more than 1 universe/reality/world is present in the anime. Plot Continuity Consistency of the characteristics of persons, plot, objects, places and events seen by the viewer.
A single linear focused plot is highly continuous.
A truly random plot is highly discontinuous. Shounen A style of anime and manga intended for boys, characterized by high-action, often humorous plots featuring male protagonists. The camaraderie between boys or men on sports teams, fighting squads, etc. is often emphasized. Unrealistically attractive female characters are also common (see fanservice), but are not a requirement. The art style of shounen also tends to be less flowery than that of shoujo. Slapstick Slapstick humour is generally recognized by lots of physical abuse, horseplay and practical jokes. Also often seen are impossible situations, using sounds to illustrate impossible stunts that aren`t shown on-screen and to create tension for audience anticipation. Swordplay The act or art of using a sword or similar weapon skillfully. Time: Past Anime that takes place in the past or clearly seems to take place in the past in case of an alternative universe. This category should almost always go together with one of its sub-categories, because the past can either be a depiction of a historical event(s) or not, in which case it would be alternative past. Tragedy Tragedy is a form of drama characterized by seriousness and dignity, usually involving a conflict between a character and some higher power, such as the law, the gods, fate, or society. Violence Physical force against self or other, compelling action against one`s will on pain of being hurt.

alchemy Alchemy is the "art of transformation" or "transmutation" (the art of sacrificing the matter of certain objects for the creation of something else), and is a historical science of philosophy. awesome main character The show`s main characters deserve to be held in awe — this could be for many reasons including but not limited to ability, personality, strength of character.
Which is good. I mean who wants angst ridden brats for main characters these days anyway? bibliophile The main character (or someone around him/her) loves books in such a way, that every waking hour is spent either reading or buying/getting books.
In anime, the extreme cases generally own a house only to fill it with books to the brim, and this characters are prone to the "being buried under a huge pile of books" accident variety. brothers Two siblings, both of them of male gender, are present in this anime. corrupt military no description set yet deus ex machina When the story has been spun so wildly and the plot has been driven so deeply, when all resources are exhausted and the linear truth stands so proudly at the end of the road, ready to bring the never-ending adventure to its epic conclusion...
The writers kick you in the behind and say "Screw that!! Suddenly... UFOs!!! No, wait, Werewolf UFOs!!! Bet you didn`t see that coming!"
It`s the old-Greek form of solving your broken story because it was too much work to do it all over again, or you`ve already shown stuff that compromises what you wanted to do. It`s finding out about a better dragon on a whole different planet because you`ve already been revived 3 times and that`s the cap. It`s breaking a spaceship and "oh wait, there`s an exact copy built in secret by an unknown guy on the other side of the planet, and you can use it free of charge". It`s Doraemon`s pouch, on every single episode. differs from manga The anime content treatment differs (significantly) from the original manga material. European stylized The anime is set in a fictional Europe. Imagine an architectural mix of London, Paris, Rome, Berlin, Prague, and other cities in the 19th century. facial distortion The characters face are exaggerated into a misshape, deformed, and almost warped. Used as comedy element to express extreme mood swings.
Differing from "Super Deformed", here only the face changes to an extreme degree, not the whole body of the protagonist. great soundtrack The anime soundtrack is noteworthy. guy shorter than girl He is short, she is tall, it`s destiny. height complex The main character is easily irritated and becomes angry when someone calls him short. magic circles A circle used to contain magical energy and/or to provide magical protection. It can be drawn (with chalk etc.) or it can just spontaneously appear as part of the spell/ritual. maturing character One of the character grows mature along the events shown in this anime. The process may be mental and/or physical. mechanical limbs no description set yet never forget no description set yet overlapping ED music Part of the ending theme music plays during the show, rather than being entirely contained in the repetitive ending video. philosopher`s stone The philosopher`s stone, reputed to be hard as stone and malleable as wax, is a legendary alchemical tool, supposedly capable of turning base metals into gold; it was also sometimes believed to be an elixir of life, useful for rejuvenation and possibly for achieving immortality. phone booth murder A typical device in detective stories, where an informant is killed in a phone booth. Incidentally, that usually happens right before he is able to deliver important information, most often even killed just before he/she could utter the last few vitally important words, which would reveal everything.
As mobile phones have become common, the number of phone boxes has declined sharply, as did the number of murders in them. plot twists no description set yet post-war setting An armed conflict has ended not too long ago, devastation of the world or society is still evident. prosthetics no description set yet seven deadly sins The Seven Deadly Sins, also known as the Capital Vices or Cardinal Sins, are a classification of the most objectionable vices that have been "around" since early Christian times to educate and instruct followers concerning the (immoral) fallen man`s tendency to sin. These sins are: "Lust", "Gluttony", "Greed", "Sloth", "Wrath", "Envy", and "Pride". travelling adventure The main protagonist will usually travel from place to place, accompanied by a group of eccentric, quirky characters, experiencing many adventures — often one per episode. walking armour A seemingly empty armour (usually ones that knights used to wear, such as plate armour) that comes to life.
Most of the time roaming ghosts, spirits or souls overtake and use them as a physical vessel, but in some instances they are embedded into the armour - though not always consensually.
There is also a possibility that an animated armour is powered by a magical spell or just complex mechanical constructs.
Without the need of bodily functions they are often used as guards.
