Based on the adult visual novel by August.
Fortune Arterial's story revolves around the male protagonist Hasekura Kouhei, who transfers into a prestigious public school in the style of an English six-year school encompassing junior-high and high school students. The school is on an island named Tamatsu Island off-shore from mainland Japan, and the only way to get there is by boat. Soon after transferring, he discovers that one of the student in the class next door to his, Sendou Erika, is in fact a type of vampire.
Categories Angst A feeling of general discomfort and uneasiness is present due to either trivial or more serious reasons, often accompanied by depression. Warning: may contain copious amounts of brooding and sighing. Asia Asia is the world`s largest and most populous continent. Clubs Even though school clubs in Japan are not mandatory, there is some pressure from the social grid (e.g. fellow students, teachers) to participate in some kind of after-school activity, be it in sports or arts. Colleges also have clubs. As a comedy element in anime, some students have joined too many clubs, and are thus constantly stressed out. There is also the element of social commentary, making it clear that you have to join a club, if you want to be part of the class. Since self-founded clubs need at least 3 members, the desperate search and advertising for new members can be cause for hilarity in anime. Comedy Anime whose central struggle causes hilarious results. These stories are built upon funny characters, situations and events. A comedy anime is laced with humour and sets out to provoke laughter from the audience. Japanese humour can be a bit strange to westerners, so if you`re new to this type of humour, just bear with it; it`ll most likely grow on you if you`re a fan of other kinds of comedy. Coming of Age In the strict sense the Coming of age describes a young person`s transition from adolescence to adulthood. In anime the term is used in a more general sense where the protagonists have to face a challenge, make an important decision in their life, take on responsibility, or learn a lesson, and by overcoming these obstacles they reach a higher level of maturity. Contemporary Fantasy Magic and supernatural beings exist secretly in what is generally regarded as the real world. Such elements may have originated from another world. Stories where a modern-day character travels to an alternate fantasy world are not considered contemporary fantasy. Earth That big mud ball that most of us live on. Harem Harem anime is when three or more females that for some reason are in the presence of one male as a central plot element. Generally, both the girls` looks and personalities vary a lot, and most of them are interested in the one guy. Sometimes, none of the girls are really interested at first, so the protagonist has to build relationships with them. Ecchi pretty much can`t be avoided, and it`s typical to see the protagonist stamped as a pervert by some of the girls, whether he is one or not. A lot of harem anime were originally Visual Novels, since most Visual Novels revolve around controlling this one guy, trying to build a relationship with several girls. In a story where there is one female and several good looking males it`s a "reverse harem" or "male harem". High School The upper-secondary education (not compulsory in Japan) covers the grades ten, eleven, and twelve. The students are typically fifteen to eighteen years old. Anime centre on High School settings predominately: Plot/story-wise the coming of age is of interest - the students are almost adults (their bodies have matured, see ecchi anime) with more earnest, real-life problems. Horror The horror cinematic genre is characterized by the attempt to make the viewer experience dread, fear, terror, or horror. Often their plots involve the intrusion of an evil force, event or personage, sometimes of supernatural origin, on the mundane world and the consequences thereof. Japan Last stronghold for humanity, if Tokyo falls, it`s all over. Tokyo tower will undoubtedly fall anyway. Large Breasts Focus on larger than average breasts. Pretty common in anime. Usually involves adolescent girls or fully grown women. Love Polygon A love polygon refers to a romantic relationship involving n people. Although a love triangle is not limited to just heterosexual relationships, in anime, it usually deals with two females liking one male and vice versa. Nudity Nudity is the state of wearing no clothing and exposing the bare skin or intimate parts.
Especially gratuitous fanservice shows tend to show their characters frequently without any clothes, though often hiding genitals through the means of additions like steam. Original Work: Dating Sim - Visual Novel The two terms are similar yet different, however, the fact that they look and `feel` the same outweighs the technical differences. For clarification, visual novels are considered a sub-genre of adventure games and the term does not cover simulations. While the two genres often share a common visual presentation, dating sims are sometimes considered to be more statistically based than the "choose your own adventure" style of visual novels; basically, the choices you make might change something else than just the story arc (or your next porn pic). Dating sims can involve several technical elements such as a time limit, several statistics such as looks and charm which can be boosted through exercise, or an "attraction meter" which can increase or decrease depending on one`s decisions. Original Work: Erotic Game An erotic game (eroge) is a Japanese video or computer game that features erotic content, usually in the form of anime-style artwork. In English, eroge are often called hentai games in keeping with the English slang definition of hentai. This is sometimes shortened to H games. In Japan, eroge are also referred to as 18 games. Most erotic games are visual novels or dating sims but are not limited to them.
Any anime adaptation of a game that contains (or had a version than contains) adult content (generally sex scenes), regardless of how some fanboys blabber on how "the story in that visual novel was too good to be labelled as porn!", should definitely get this category added under them. This should make it pretty clear as to what is an erotic game and what is not. Original Work: Game Based on an interactive (even if minimally so) form of entertainment software, generally available for PCs, consoles or arcade machines. Romance Romance describes a story that deals with love between two or more characters typically also having an optimistic ending. Romance is also a difficulty encountered when creating a harem. School Life Since a large part of the anime audience still takes part in school life or is visiting college, it is only natural to choose a setting the audience can identify with, be it elementary, middle, or high school. For the older viewers a college setting with more mature real-life problems is appropriate. And since clubs take up so much time in the lives of students, these are obviously also important. Seinen A subset of anime or manga that is generally targeted at a 18 - 25 year old male audience, but the audience can be much older with some manga aimed at businessmen well into their 40s. Slapstick Slapstick humour is generally recognized by lots of physical abuse, horseplay and practical jokes. Also often seen are impossible situations, using sounds to illustrate impossible stunts that aren`t shown on-screen and to create tension for audience anticipation. Stereotypes Then there is the question of the character set presentation. Is it completely original, or is it your usual stereotypical character cast. Both choices have their merit, for example it would not really make much sense to reinvent the wheel for a harem anime. Fans of that genre come to expect their favourite stereotype protagonists. Time: Present Somewhere between past and future Vampires A super-human species, with long fangs used to penetrate the tender neck of young females, to drink blood. Violence Physical force against self or other, compelling action against one`s will on pain of being hurt. Tags adorable lolis no description set yet amnesia Loss of memory.
Used as story element, gradually revealing a protagonist`s past that had been forgotten. Usually revealing a terribly gruesome happening. ara ara “Ara ara” is a catchphrase used by a few anime characters, most notably the famous airhead Otohime Mutsumi from Love Hina. It is roughly equivalent to the English expression “My, my”. Basically, it shows the user’s surprise at some event, sometimes also used with a hint of sarcasm.
Examples of usage: “My, my (Ara, ara), where did you get this beautiful dog?” “Are you angry? My, my (Ara, ara), isn’t that rare?” beach episode Also known as umi episode. Every anime has to have them, episodes in which the characters for whatever reason end up going to the sea, ocean, random island or the local pond.
Usually used for fanservice purpose as it gives the staff the opportunity to draw the characters in swimsuits and raise the DVD sales.
The cheap version is the pool episode.
Other marginally less used variants of this are the onsen episode and the sentou episode, used when it is too cold for a beach/pool episode. childhood friend Plot device: The usually main protagonist encounters or “lives with” a friend from childhood times. By default they have a very close relationship that usually interferers with other present-day relations.
Typical scenarios: Male protagonist has been looked after by the female childhood friend ever since they were kids, representing the default “girlfriend” in a harem anime. Or the childhood friend has been away in some other city or foreign country and suddenly returns surprising the main protagonist, who had almost forgotten about this friend (as in “Sudden Girlfriend Appearance”). In the latter case, protagonist and friend may be bound by some unreasonable “childhood promise”. childhood town The protagonist returns to his/her childhood town after a significant period of absence. As one would expect, some things stay the same, and some don`t.
Usually this involves a fair amount of amnesia on the protagonist`s part, and his/her attempts to remember a childhood friend/promise/memory. comic relief animal sidekick Every mahou shoujo anime needs them, the cute little critters that are supposed to help the protagonists but in reality are nothing but useless bystanders most often abused for gags. Kids love them but they can also often turn into an annoyance. dorms no description set yet eternal loli The loli keeps the appearance of a very young girl forever.
Character traits: The loli may be cursed, may have been resurrected, or may be as vicious, evil, and powerful as Nosferatu. The age can vary from 100 years to several millennia. But the typical "girlie" clothes and some of the behavioural patterns are still those of a 5-7 year old girl. fanservice `Fan Service` typically consists of a variety of racy or sexual content — usually female but sometimes male — aimed to catch the viewer`s attention, with something suggestive and generally `pleasing to the eyes`. More often than not this involves nudity, yet can simply have to do with panty shots / flashing of undergarments, bathing suits, the jiggling of breasts, or other such eye candy.
While the term is used primarily with respect to Japanese animation, any gratuitous content within entertainment may be considered to be `fan service`. furo scene Furo (polite: Ofuro) is Japanese for bath, specifically a type of bath which originated as a short, steep-sided wooden bathtub. Baths of this type are found all over Japan in houses, apartments and traditional Japanese inns (Ryokans).
Furo are part of the Japanese ritual of bathing, not used for washing but for relaxing and warming oneself. Washing is carried out separately outside the furo, and only when completely clean does the bather enter the water. Generally Japanese bathrooms are small, so the bathroom is set up much like a walk-in shower area but containing the ofuro.
The cheapest and shortest way to show naked skin on TV, at least as much as allowed. It usually only takes up few minutes at most and as such it gives the staff the opportunity to draw the characters in the nude and raise the DVD sales while still maintaining a "non-filler" episode.
Compare to the big brothers sentou episode and onsen episode. lovable loli no description set yet onee-sama Onee-sama is a Japanese term which literally translates as respected elder sister, but can be used (especially by admirers) to refer to any young female. The onee-sama is always an older character, if only by a year. She is essentially a princess for the other characters with grace, beauty, and poise. An onee-sama usually meets her counterpart at some point in a story in the form of a charmingly imperfect girl who is too sweet, innocent, or clueless to be intimidated by her and merely wishes to make a new friend. Examples include the cast of Maria-sama ga Miteru, where most of the important characters are referred to in this way and Top wo Nerae! 1&2 where the protagonists of the story have the archetypical senpai-kouhai relationship. pool episode An episode playing at the pool, mostly in school, sometimes outside of it when the cast does not have a chance for a beach episode.
Usually used for fanservice purpose as it gives the staff the opportunity to draw the characters in swimsuits and raise the DVD sales.
The cheap version of the beach episode.
Other variants are the onsen episode and the sentou episode. school festival The obligatory school (or culture) festival with cosplay cafe, haunted house, theatre performance, and food booths can not be missing in any school setting.
For good measure there may also be an athletics or sports festival in this anime. school sports festival To show off the students in sports clothing — in ecchi anime the female students in particular — a sports festival is quite popular in your typical anime with school setting. Here the protagonists can show their skills in diverse athletic competitions.
Note: This festival may also, though very rarely, take place at a kindergarten or preschool. school swimsuit A school swimsuit (also known as sukumizu, shorthand for school mizugi) is a standardised navy blue one-piece swimsuit worn by schoolgirls. Typically they also have a name tag on the front. Sukumizu can also be black or white. sense of foreboding The anime starts off quietly, everything seems to be fine, but from episode to episode the signs that something ominous is about to happen increase. E.g. a typical mystery setting. student council One or more of the main characters either occupy seats in their school`s student council or have close friends that take part in the council.
In detail: The student council is a group of students, for the students, elected by the students. This group works in partnership with school management, staff and parents for the benefit of the school and its other students.
There are typically one or two student representatives per classroom and one presiding set of officers (president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, etc.) However, many secondary schools have atleast one set of officers per grade level.
The student council helps share students’ ideas, interests, and concerns with other students, teachers and school principals. They also often organize fund raisers for school-wide activities, including social events, community projects and school reform. sudden naked girl appearance A character or group of characters are simply minding their own business, when suddenly, a naked girl appears. It does not matter how or why, but a naked someone is there. Sometimes the naked girl is not happy about this.
Usually this is a fanservice element, but not always. summer festival The summer festival is used to show off the female protagonists in traditional Japanese clothing — the yukata — a casual form of kimono.
The festivities include food stalls (cotton candy, candy apples, choco bananas, taiyaki), various games (scoop goldfishes), and a fireworks display. swimsuit At least one female character is wearing a swimsuit in this anime. Probably either at the beach or the school`s pool. And if the anime is ecchi the swimsuit will be daring! transfer student If the anime has a school setting, chances are good that a transfer student (male or female) will appear. tsundere A character type (usually female), who is often easily agitated or combative, but other times is quite kind and caring, especially in situations involving a person they are (knowingly or unknowingly) attracted to. zettai ryouiki Japanese for "absolute area", and refers to an area of bare skin on the legs between a skirt and knee- or thigh high stockings.
