Detective Conan is about an elementary school boy named Conan Edogawa. He solves mysteries and crimes through reasoning, logic, the help of his friends and some nifty gadgets provided by Professor Agasa. But Conan is not really an elementary school boy: in reality he's the famous 17-year-old high school detective Shinichi Kudo! While investigating some suspicious men in black, Shinichi was knocked down by one of them. During his semi-conscious state, an experimental drug was forced down his throat that was meant to kill him. Instead of dying, Shinichi shrunk into a little kid. In order to prevent the men in black who did this to him from hurting his friends and family, Shinichi changed his name to Conan Edogawa and lives now with his childhood friend, Ran and her dad, detective Kogoro Mori, without them knowing about his situation.
Categories
Action
Action anime usually involve a fairly straightforward story of good guys versus bad guys, where most disputes are resolved by using physical force. It often contains a lot of shooting, explosions and fighting.
Americas
The Americas are the lands of the Western hemisphere or (generally) the New World, consisting of the continents of North America and South America with their associated islands and regions.
Asia
Asia is the world`s largest and most populous continent.
Baseball
Baseball is like a complicated version of Rounders. It involves hitting a ball with a stick, then running around several bases placed in the form of a diamond on a field. Big in the US, and also in Japan.
Comedy
Anime whose central struggle causes hilarious results. These stories are built upon funny characters, situations and events. A comedy anime is laced with humour and sets out to provoke laughter from the audience.
Japanese humour can be a bit strange to westerners, so if you`re new to this type of humour, just bear with it; it`ll most likely grow on you if you`re a fan of other kinds of comedy.
Cops
The police (civil servants) are the good guys in the battle against crime. Though they try hard, they are usually outclassed by super-criminals or criminal organizations in anime, requiring the help of special units or some lone hero.
Detective
It focuses on the efforts of the Detective, private investigator or amateur sleuth to solve the mysterious circumstances of a crime by means of clues, investigation, and clever deduction. The successful mystery film often conceals the identity of the perpetrator until late in the story, then adds an element of suspense during the apprehension of the suspect.
Earth
That big mud ball that most of us live on.
Elementary School
The primary education (compulsory in Japan) covers the first six grades. The students are typically six to twelve years old.
The small size and energetic / playful attics of the young students make the comedic appeal and cuteness of super deformed "older" characters superfluous. Hilarity ensues when seemingly innocent children comment on the worlds troubles in a sarcastic adult way. Huge potential for heart-warming anime!
High School
The upper-secondary education (not compulsory in Japan) covers the grades ten, eleven, and twelve. The students are typically fifteen to eighteen years old.
Anime centre on High School settings predominately: Plot/story-wise the coming of age is of interest - the students are almost adults (their bodies have matured, see ecchi anime) with more earnest, real-life problems.
Japan
Last stronghold for humanity, if Tokyo falls, it`s all over. Tokyo tower will undoubtedly fall anyway.
Law and Order
Where there is "wealth", there are criminals. It is up to the civil law enforcement, i.e. detectives, Police or Special Squads, to keep the lawless activities in the real world or in cyberspace under control.
Note: Do not confuse this with Military presence.
Original Work: Manga
Manga is the lifeblood that drives the anime industry. Everything and its mother is based on manga. However! There are exceptions where the manga was not the basis for the anime.
It`s common practice to make manga adaptations of many popular anime, there`s a manga based on Evangelion, and two (one shounen and one shoujo) based on each of Escaflowne and Mahou Tsukai Tai. Also it`s quite common to release manga and anime versions of a story in parallel, for instance Nadesico and Shoujo Kakumei Utena. There are also cases where an anime continues in a manga, or reverse, as in the case of Angel Beats! and Angel Beats: Heaven`s Door.
Romance
Romance describes a story that deals with love between two or more characters typically also having an optimistic ending.
Shounen
A style of anime and manga intended for boys, characterized by high-action, often humorous plots featuring male protagonists. The camaraderie between boys or men on sports teams, fighting squads, etc. is often emphasized. Unrealistically attractive female characters are also common (see fanservice), but are not a requirement. The art style of shounen also tends to be less flowery than that of shoujo.
Time: Present
Somewhere between past and future
Underworld
The underworld we talk about here is not to be confused with the place where people are believed to go after they die, but the general term for organized crime. It is a shady world, unknown to most people, where illegal things like murder, smuggling, drug dealing and similar are happening daily. Groups known to be acting in this world are for example the mafia or the yakuza.
United States
The United States of America (commonly referred to as the United States, the U.S., the USA, or America) is a federal constitutional republic comprising fifty states and a federal district.
