Bishounen Young man whose beauty (and sexual appeal) transcends the boundary of gender or sexual orientation. Ninjas A ninja is a kind of spy or assassin who lived in Japan beginning in the 14th century. They are usually clad in black to aid their secret mission and to be able to hide in the dark, although some ninja prefer to wear orange jumpsuits and be noisy. Ninja are also attributed many abilities far above those of the average human. Original Work: Manga Manga is the lifeblood that drives the anime industry. Everything and its mother is based on manga. However! There are exceptions where the manga was not the basis for the anime.
It`s common practice to make manga adaptations of many popular anime, there`s a manga based on Evangelion, and two (one shounen and one shoujo) based on each of Escaflowne and Mahou Tsukai Tai. Also it`s quite common to release manga and anime versions of a story in parallel, for instance Nadesico and Shoujo Kakumei Utena. There are also cases where an anime continues in a manga, as in the case of Angel Beats! and Angel Beats: Heaven`s Door, or reverse. Samurai The samurai were the military nobility in pre-industrial Japan.
By the end of the 12th century, samurai became almost entirely synonymous with bushi (武士).
The samurai followed a set of written rules called the Bushidou.
Samurai teachings can still be found today in modern day society with the martial art Kendou, meaning the way of the sword.
This Anime will include one or more sword-carrying/wielding warriors. Seinen A subset of anime or manga that is generally targeted at a 18 - 25 year old male audience, but the audience can be much older with some manga aimed at businessmen well into their 40s. Shounen A style of anime and manga intended for boys, characterized by high-action, often humorous plots featuring male protagonists. The camaraderie between boys or men on sports teams, fighting squads, etc. is often emphasized. Unrealistically attractive female characters are also common (see fanservice), but are not a requirement. The art style of shounen also tends to be less flowery than that of shoujo. Swordplay The act or art of using a sword or similar weapon skillfully. Time: Past Anime that takes place in the past or clearly seems to take place in the past in case of an alternative universe. This category should almost always go together with one of its sub-categories, because the past can either be a depiction of a historical event(s) or not, in which case it would be alternative past. Violence Physical force against self or other, compelling action against one`s will on pain of being hurt.

annoying female lead no description set yet call my name "TETSUOOOOOO!!" "KANEDAAAAAA!!"
"TAMAHOMEEEE!!" "MIAKAAAA!!"
Feelings of any kind towards other characters are best shown by calling each other`s name, loud, REALLY LOUD. For better effect at least twice or thrice. For lover`s couples and mortal enemies it is a requirement to run towards each other while calling each other`s name, unaware of the surroundings. calling your attacks "GIGAAAAAA DRIIIIIILLL BREAKEEEEEERRR"
Having a special attack is always a must but not impressive enough. Every special attack needs a name. A really awesome and outstanding name which is easy to remember and even easier and impressive to yell. Because it just is not enough to name your attack. No, to unleash the full power of your attack, you have to call its name in your most MANLY and LOUDEST voice.
It does not matter whether it is a martial arts move, a magical spell or flying drills from your mecha, if you can`t call its name, it just isn`t nearly as cool or effective. Not a requirement but wearing shades while calling your attack makes it at least twice as cool, moreover giving your mecha or magical companion shades too results in an immeasurable level of awesomeness, bringing down every enemy just through the POWER OF YOUR VOICE.
A standard feature of practically every mecha, mahou shoujo, high fantasy, or martial arts anime. damsel in distress The damsel in distress is usually a young, nubile woman placed in a dire predicament by a villain or a monster and requires a hero to dash to her rescue. Often used to unite the cast of a show for this one goal, to make them put differences aside and become a band of nakama.
Examples: Sakoshita Yanagi from Rekka no Honoo, Yuuki Miaka from Fushigi Yuugi or Higurashi Kagome from Inuyasha. dango Japanese (sweet) dumplings made from rice flour (often in the form of pink, white, and green spheroids on a stick). freak of the week On a pretty much regular basis — weekly or episodic — the protagonists are confronted by some "strange being", usually in an all-out battle.
This can make the anime quite repetitive. genki girl An energetic, eccentric type of character, usually a schoolgirl, but not always. A character that has an incredible excess of energy (e.g. runs everywhere, speaks quickly, etc.) and always seems to do everything fast (full-throttle).
A genki girl is filled with confidence and determination, regardless of whether she is competent or not. Although usually played exclusively for comedy, sometimes the genki girl slows down for a serious or introspective moment.
Examples of genki girls:
- Suzumiya Haruhi from Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu
- Excel from Excel Saga
- Torako from Hyakko
- Manami from Gakuen Utopia Manabi Straight! glutton Used as comedy element, one of the characters really "digs in" when it comes to food. This can be quite hilarious, when the usually female protagonist loses all inhibitions concerning food. hidden power For some reason or another a character has powers (or potential) he or she can`t access and may not even know about.
In some anime these hidden powers are used quite frequently to overcome an enemy or threat (e.g. Naruto, Bleach). huge sword The protagonist wields a (ridiculously) large sword defying the laws of physics, namely inertia / gravity. magic circles A circle used to contain magical energy and/or to provide magical protection. It can be drawn (with chalk etc.) or it can just spontaneously appear as part of the spell/ritual. miko A Japanese shrine maiden, usually depicted wearing a white kimono shirt and a red hakama (a cross between pants and a long skirt). They are often priestesses at Shinto shrines. one very annoying character For some reason sometimes there is one very annoying (lead) character that will not just die or shut up. poorly directed The direction in this anime, supposedly, leaves something to be desired. predominantly male cast The anime features a mostly male cast, i.e. female characters are rare.
Example: Reverse harem setting with a plethora of bishounen. recruiting teammates no description set yet senseless plot no description set yet shallow storyline There is not much story in the anime, e.g. there is "endless pointless fighting" or there are other banal plot elements that bore the viewer. so bad that it`s funny no description set yet timeout available Even in the middle of battle, lengthy discussions and planning sessions occur, while the opponents presumably stand around and take a coffee break. tsundere A character type (usually female), who is often easily agitated or combative, but other times is quite kind and caring, especially in situations involving a person they are (knowingly or unknowingly) attracted to. unappealing female characters no description set yet weak female lead The female lead is quite weak and seems to have trouble protecting herself physically.
Or she may be lacking in character, i.e. caves in to everything, does not have much of a will of her own. yandere A character trait involving a personality initially loving and gentle that becomes psychotic or deranged, often brutally so. yaoi subtext Actions between two male characters that could be taken as or misinterpreted as being amorous in nature.
