Kurosaki Ichigo is a teenager gifted with the ability to see spirits. His life is drastically changed by the sudden appearance of a Shinigami (literally, Death god) - one who governs the flow of souls between the human world and the afterlife - named Kuchiki Rukia, who arrives in search of a Hollow, a dangerous lost soul. When Rukia is severely wounded while trying to defeat the Hollow, she attempts to transfer half of her Reiatsu (literally, Spiritual pressure) energy to Ichigo so that he can defeat the Hollow. However, Ichigo takes almost all of her energy, transforming into a Shinigami and allowing him to defeat the Hollow with ease. With her powers diminished, Rukia is left stranded in the human world until she can recover her strength. In the meantime, Ichigo must take over Rukia's role as a Shinigami, battling Hollows and guiding souls to the afterlife realm known as the Soul Society.
Categories Action Action anime usually involve a fairly straightforward story of good guys versus bad guys, where most disputes are resolved by using physical force. It often contains a lot of shooting, explosions and fighting. Asia Asia is the world`s largest and most populous continent. Comedy Anime whose central struggle causes hilarious results. These stories are built upon funny characters, situations and events. A comedy anime is laced with humour and sets out to provoke laughter from the audience. Japanese humour can be a bit strange to westerners, so if you`re new to this type of humour, just bear with it; it`ll most likely grow on you if you`re a fan of other kinds of comedy. Demons Often described as minions from Hell. Generally known to attack humans and feast on their flesh or possess the bodies of those with weak souls. Japan Last stronghold for humanity, if Tokyo falls, it`s all over. Tokyo tower will undoubtedly fall anyway. Large Breasts Focus on larger than average breasts. Pretty common in anime. Usually involves adolescent girls or fully grown women. Martial Arts Characterized by extensive fighting scenes employing various types of martial arts, meaning systems of codified practices and traditions of training for combat. Original Work: Manga Manga is the lifeblood that drives the anime industry. Everything and its mother is based on manga. However! There are exceptions where the manga was not the basis for the anime. It`s common practice to make manga adaptations of many popular anime, there`s a manga based on Evangelion, and two (one shounen and one shoujo) based on each of Escaflowne and Mahou Tsukai Tai. Also it`s quite common to release manga and anime versions of a story in parallel, for instance Nadesico and Shoujo Kakumei Utena. There are also cases where an anime continues in a manga, or reverse, as in the case of Angel Beats! and Angel Beats: Heaven`s Door. Parallel Universe Parallel universe/world or alternative reality is a self-contained separate reality coexisting with our own. Because "alternative reality" sometimes implies that the reality is a variant of our own, like for example a mirror world, we`ll use the term "Parallel Universe" which is more general, without any connotations implying a relationship (or lack thereof) with our own universe (meaning a fantasy world can just as well have an alternative reality, doesn`t need to be our reality). To put it more simply, this category is to show if more than 1 universe/reality/world is present in the anime. Plot Continuity Consistency of the characteristics of persons, plot, objects, places and events seen by the viewer. A single linear focused plot is highly continuous. A truly random plot is highly discontinuous. School Life Since a large part of the anime audience still takes part in school life or is visiting college, it is only natural to choose a setting the audience can identify with, be it elementary, middle, or high school. For the older viewers a college setting with more mature real-life problems is appropriate. And since clubs take up so much time in the lives of students, these are obviously also important. Shounen A style of anime and manga intended for boys, characterized by high-action, often humorous plots featuring male protagonists. The camaraderie between boys or men on sports teams, fighting squads, etc. is often emphasized. Unrealistically attractive female characters are also common (see fanservice), but are not a requirement. The art style of shounen also tends to be less flowery than that of shoujo. Slapstick Slapstick humour is generally recognized by lots of physical abuse, horseplay and practical jokes. Also often seen are impossible situations, using sounds to illustrate impossible stunts that aren`t shown on-screen and to create tension for audience anticipation. Special Squads The Special Squads are called in when the police is completely outclassed, e.g. fighting criminal syndicates. These special forces are trained to combat specific forms of crime, e.g. the anti-cyber-crime division. There are several such squads: Whereas Section 9 of Ghost in the Shell is an official government organisation, there are also "benevolent" vigilante groups like the Knight Sabers (Bubblegum Crisis). Criminal syndicates also have their special forces e.g. "death squads". Super Power Be it an ancient Greek Hercules, a cybernetic muscle-man, or a fourteen year-old girl in a mini-skirted sailor suit. As long as they have super powers, they`re in the show. Swordplay The act or art of using a sword or similar weapon skillfully. Time: Present Somewhere between past and future Tags calling your attacks "GIGAAAAAA DRIIIIIILLL BREAKEEEEEERRR"
Having a special attack is always a must but not impressive enough. Every special attack needs a name. A really awesome and outstanding name which is easy to remember and even easier and impressive to yell. Because it just is not enough to name your attack. No, to unleash the full power of your attack, you have to call its name in your most MANLY and LOUDEST voice.
It does not matter whether it is a martial arts move, a magical spell or flying drills from your mecha, if you can`t call its name, it just isn`t nearly as cool or effective. Not a requirement but wearing shades while calling your attack makes it at least twice as cool, moreover giving your mecha or magical companion shades too results in an immeasurable level of awesomeness, bringing down every enemy just through the POWER OF YOUR VOICE.
A standard feature of practically every mecha, mahou shoujo, high fantasy, or martial arts anime. comic relief animal sidekick Every mahou shoujo anime needs them, the cute little critters that are supposed to help the protagonists but in reality are nothing but useless bystanders most often abused for gags. Kids love them but they can also often turn into an annoyance. damsel in distress The damsel in distress is usually a young, nubile woman placed in a dire predicament by a villain or a monster and requires a hero to dash to her rescue. Often used to unite the cast of a show for this one goal, to make them put differences aside and become a band of nakama.
Examples: Sakoshita Yanagi from Rekka no Honoo, Yuuki Miaka from Fushigi Yuugi or Higurashi Kagome from Inuyasha. dark-skinned girl The anime features a girl with a dark skin. deus ex machina When the story has been spun so wildly and the plot has been driven so deeply, when all resources are exhausted and the linear truth stands so proudly at the end of the road, ready to bring the never-ending adventure to its epic conclusion... The writers kick you in the behind and say "Screw that!! Suddenly... UFO`s!!! No, wait, Werewolf UFO`s!!! Bet you didn`t see that coming!"
It`s the old-Greek form of solving your broken story because it was too much work to do it all over again, or you`ve already shown stuff that compromises what you wanted to do. It`s finding out about a better dragon on a whole different planet because you`ve already been revived 3 times and that`s the cap. It`s breaking a spaceship and "oh wait, there`s an exact copy built in secret by an unknown guy on the other side of the planet, and you can use it free of charge". It`s Doraemon`s pouch, on every single episode. drastic change of life One or more characters in this series go through an event that makes them change their way of life drastically and permanently. This change might be voluntary, or against the character`s will.
Some examples might be an accident, the gaining of superpowers, or simply graduating. endless pointless fighting For no plausible reason there are fighting scenes in every episode, nothing more than pointless action fillers. fighting For some reason or other one faction has to take it out on some opponent via fight or battle. Typical examples of this are all the anime with "endless pointless fighting" tag. fillers Describes episodes, usually within a long-running series, that break away from the base story. Primary focus could remain on the main protagonist(s), but may often shift the spotlight to secondary characters. The events and developments usually contain little to no relevance to the main storyline (or absolutely no relevance at all).
Fillers may often coincide with "side stories", which by much disappoint by fans (though occasionally highly dependant on content), may span several episodes. While this is a dreaded fate of the perpetual ongoing, such may also just as disappointingly exist in series that only run one season. funky Spanish Found in anime where there is a funky Latino character involved. Not always but usually a male has a tan and macho clothing so he can show off his manliness in either the form of fighting spirit or brotherly bonds (this can also include different forms of `respect`).
If this tag is found in a fighting anime with the tag `calling your attacks` the funky Latino person can easily be identified by having funky Spanish names for his attacks such as: "El Directo or La Muerte". girls with swords Female characters with various swords as their main weapon of choice. Although the size and shape of the blade is often unique and even drastically over-sized, the wielder is almost always free from extra restraint it would be thought to inflict upon them. henshin Japanese for "transformation" (metamorphosis or disguise).
A "henshin anime" is any anime, where the characters or their costumes transform, such as Sailor Moon. The henshin switches on the character`s special powers, and is frequently accompanied by a costume change. Often the change of clothing is the only outward indicator that the character has changed and yet nobody seems to notice the hero`s true self.
Most henshin heroes have a special item which they use to change into their heroic form. These items are usually activated by a command phrase (which is often in Engrish, for some reason), triggering a transformation sequence. huge sword The protagonist wields a (ridiculously) large sword defying the laws of physics, namely inertia / gravity. instant power-up Just when the protagonist reaches a level of power previously thought unreachable, a new foe/set of foes appear that will put this already invincible hero to their greatest test ever! Fear not though, for the protagonist shall find some new hidden power/secret art to overcome his (current) adversaries! long speeches Usually found in shows where either the main protagonist or the villain feel a need to elaborate every single thing that pops up in their mind, often ending up in an entire episode filled with an unending speech where tension is supposed to build up before a big fight only revealing that after the speech the episode itself is over. parallel world This anime takes place in either a world parallel to ours or features multiple worlds that are parallel to each other. This is often found in `inter-dimensional school girl` anime where the heroine travels to a parallel world to save it from certain destruction (or in some cases both worlds). perpetual ongoing No end in sight! No matter what the genre may be or what the storyline consists of, this series just keeps on going... and going... and going...
Some examples: One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, Detective Conan, Dragon Ball ( Z ), Pocket Monsters (Pokemon). protection complex A main character will be practically obsessed with the protection of one or more other characters. This desire to protect may be so strong, it could unconsciously subject and influence the character`s attitude and behavior towards situations or other people in general. The obsessive protector will feel it`s their mission in life to protect the other character, possibly viewing themselves as worthless or a failure if that single duty is to be slightly off from perfection. shinigami Shinigami or "death god" is a personification of death as seen by the Japanese culture. The "Grim Reaper" would be its Western counterpart. someone always saves the hero The hero in this anime always finds himself in situations that he cannot get himself out of, requiring other characters to save him or to provide him with an instant power-up so that he can get himself out of the situation.
Most often the hero himself is someone with a righteous attitude who believes he has to save everyone while he himself cannot always accomplish this. Thus requiring the other characters to save him and the one he is trying to save. sword One or more weapons that are sharp and pointy, go swoosh and cut things into many pieces are used in this anime.
Not to be confused with "s-words". timeout available Even in the middle of battle, lengthy discussions and planning sessions occur, while the opponents presumably stand around and take a coffee break. transforming weapons This anime features transforming weapons, this can either be cars or household appliances that transform into weapons, such as transformers or weapons that themselves transform into bigger badder shapes to deal more and more damage. useless character Usually a character that has no `use` being in the show, often a damsel in distress or an elderly person who just stands around to get caught time and time again only to have the hero(es) save her/him. Weekly Shounen Jump Weekly Shounen Jump is a Japanese manga magazine, released on weekly basis, features various mangas and targets a young male audience.
Add this tag when the anime bases on a manga and that manga was serialized in this magazine.
