Action
Action anime usually involve a fairly straightforward story of good guys versus bad guys, where most disputes are resolved by using physical force. It often contains a lot of shooting, explosions and fighting.
Asia
Asia is the world`s largest and most populous continent.
Comedy
Anime whose central struggle causes hilarious results. These stories are built upon funny characters, situations and events. A comedy anime is laced with humour and sets out to provoke laughter from the audience.
Japanese humour can be a bit strange to westerners, so if you`re new to this type of humour, just bear with it; it`ll most likely grow on you if you`re a fan of other kinds of comedy.
Coming of Age
In the strict sense the Coming of age describes a young person`s transition from adolescence to adulthood. In anime the term is used in a more general sense where the protagonists have to face a challenge, make an important decision in their life, take on responsibility, or learn a lesson, and by overcoming these obstacles they reach a higher level of maturity.
Contemporary Fantasy
Magic and supernatural beings exist secretly in what is generally regarded as the real world. Such elements may have originated from another world. Stories where a modern-day character travels to an alternate fantasy world are not considered contemporary fantasy.
Cooking
Anime in the cooking genre will centre on the production of different kinds of food, including baking, but also gourmet meals and anything in between.
Detective
It focuses on the efforts of the Detective, private investigator or amateur sleuth to solve the mysterious circumstances of a crime by means of clues, investigation, and clever deduction. The successful mystery film often conceals the identity of the perpetrator until late in the story, then adds an element of suspense during the apprehension of the suspect.
Earth
That big mud ball that most of us live on.
Fantasy
Magic and other supernatural forms are primary elements of plot, theme and/or setting. Distinguished from science fiction and horror by not involving scientific or macabre themes respectively, though the three genres can often overlap each other to some extent.
Football
Football involves kicking a ball in order to score a goal, while the other team tries to stop you by kicking the ball in the other direction to score a goal of their own. Note that this is not American Football.
High School
The upper-secondary education (not compulsory in Japan) covers the grades ten, eleven, and twelve. The students are typically fifteen to eighteen years old.
Anime centre on High School settings predominately: Plot/story-wise the coming of age is of interest - the students are almost adults (their bodies have matured, see ecchi anime) with more earnest, real-life problems.
Idol
The anime revolves around people who are working towards a solo career.
Japan
Last stronghold for humanity, if Tokyo falls, it`s all over. Tokyo tower will undoubtedly fall anyway.
Martial Arts
Characterized by extensive fighting scenes employing various types of martial arts, meaning systems of codified practices and traditions of training for combat.
Ninjas
A ninja is a kind of spy or assassin who lived in Japan beginning in the 14th century. They are usually clad in black to aid their secret mission and to be able to hide in the dark, although some ninja prefer to wear orange jumpsuits and be noisy. Ninja are also attributed many abilities far above those of the average human.
Original Work: New
Not based on anything, the story is a new work, usually made up by the people involved in creating the anime. Generally if an original work (原作) credit is given, it will be to the studio, or director, or other members of the production team.
Performance
The song performance on stage or acting in a theatre is a central part of the character`s life in this anime type.
School Life
Since a large part of the anime audience still takes part in school life or is visiting college, it is only natural to choose a setting the audience can identify with, be it elementary, middle, or high school. For the older viewers a college setting with more mature real-life problems is appropriate. And since clubs take up so much time in the lives of students, these are obviously also important.
Slapstick
Slapstick humour is generally recognized by lots of physical abuse, horseplay and practical jokes. Also often seen are impossible situations, using sounds to illustrate impossible stunts that aren`t shown on-screen and to create tension for audience anticipation.
Special Squads
The Special Squads are called in when the police is completely outclassed, e.g. fighting criminal syndicates. These special forces are trained to combat specific forms of crime, e.g. the anti-cyber-crime division.
There are several such squads: Whereas Section 9 of Ghost in the Shell is an official government organisation, there are also "benevolent" vigilante groups like the Knight Sabers (Bubblegum Crisis).
Criminal syndicates also have their special forces e.g. "death squads".
Sports
Sports anime revolves around a recreational physical activity or skill. In addition they often adhere to certain genre conventions, the emphasis on training and practice in preparation for competition, characters desire for self improvement, and pursuit of a specific goal.
Stereotypes
Then there is the question of the character set presentation. Is it completely original, or is it your usual stereotypical character cast. Both choices have their merit, for example it would not really make much sense to reinvent the wheel for a harem anime. Fans of that genre come to expect their favourite stereotype protagonists.
Super Deformed
A caricature style often seen in anime when the character shows extreme emotions, like fear, anger, happiness, surprise, or shame. Seen as cute, as part of humorous comedy. The character`s face suddenly turns into a simplified version, the body will usually also deform into that of a small child (oversized head, short limbs, extra-large tears).
Swordplay
The act or art of using a sword or similar weapon skillfully.
Time: Present
Somewhere between past and future

curry episode
Japanese curry, usually eaten as curry rice — curry, rice and often pickled vegetables, served on the same plate and eaten with a spoon, is one of the most popular dishes in Japan, where people eat it 125 times a year according to a survey made in 2005.
As such Japanese series will often de a whole episode to the characters cooking and eating curry dishes.

Engrish
Engrish is actually a mispronunciation of English, as can be the result of someone who does not have English as their primary language of origin (such as Japanese or Chinese). Occasionally characters in the original Japanese dialogue version of an anime will speak in English... however; this often still requires the assistance of subtitles, for while the words are meant to be said in English, the sentence structure and letter pronunciation may still be strongly relative to the person`s primary language.
entertainment industry
The show depicts how the entertainment industry works and how the main protagonists strive to cope with the sudden change to fame. At times this can be a very ugly sight indeed.
flashback
The characters remember things from their past triggering a flashback. The anime either repeats scenes from previous episodes (danger of too many "fillers"), or actually shows new footage from very old memories.

head-biting
Comedy element: One character is so "enraged" / "annoyed" that his/her/its suddenly very large mouth ("Super Deformed") allows the biting of another character (the one who did something "stupid") in the head.
hilarious
The anime is outrageously funny.
klutz
As part of the slapstick comedy in anime there often is a character (usually female), who is particularly clumsy, i.e. tripping, bumping into objects, or dropping things. This lack of physical coordination is thought of as endearing.
New Year`s Day
It is tradition in Japan to celebrate the new year at a Shinto shrine (hatsumode). The protagonists will offer some money, ring a bell at the end of a thick rope, and then pray for good fortune.
This usually goes along with gorging yourself at the many temporary food stalls, playing various games, and drawing a fortune.
The female characters in the anime will usually dress up in a kimono, to show off their traditional Japanese clothing, while watching the fireworks.
parental abandonment
In Japan it is a common custom for parents to leave their children alone at home and embark on a lifelong trip around the world once they hit the tender age of 14, sometimes even earlier.
pool episode
An episode playing at the pool, mostly in school, sometimes outside of it when the cast does not have a chance for a beach episode.
Usually used for fanservice purpose as it gives the staff the opportunity to draw the characters in swimsuits and raise the DVD sales.
The cheap version of the beach episode.
Other variants are the onsen episode and the sentou episode.
ridiculous premise
The principal ideas used to set up the overall story are questionable at best, and are difficult to accept as rational.
It seems that the writers involved in this anime were desperate to find a new idea, creating an outlandish story background. Such an irrational plot can become quite irritating.
school sports festival
To show off the students in sports clothing - in ecchi anime the female students in particular - a sports festival is quite popular in your typical anime with school setting. Here the protagonists can show their skills in diverse athletic competitions.
school swimsuit
At least one female character (or the luckily rare male) wears this type of swimsuit, usually one or several times. It can also be part of their standard (battle) clothing (Makai Tenshi Jibril).
A more specific type of swimsuit.
Normally worn at schools though sometimes also worn at beaches when the characters feels this to be easier, forgot to buy a normal swimsuit of their own or wants to give some fan service to those that like school swimsuits better than regular swimsuits.
In ecchi or hentai anime, a swimsuit of this type sometimes serves censoring purposes when characters take a bath.
spacing out
A comedy element: The character starts to daydream or fantasize about some topic. The typical complete lack of reality makes the spacing out funny. Especially when the protagonist mumbles to himself / herself and friends hear this. Promptly teasing the possibly lovestruck and very embarrassed protagonist.
special abilities
It could be just one individual or it could be the entire population; either way, the presence of a special power/ability is an integral part of this anime.
strong female lead
The lead female character has a strong personality and plays a part that isn`t the typical damsel-in-distress role.
This is the exact opposite of the "damsel in distress" tag.
student council
One or more of the main characters either occupy seats in their school`s student council or have close friends that take part in the council.
In detail:
The student council is a group of students, for the students, elected by the students. This group works in partnership with school management, staff and parents for the benefit of the school and its other students.
There are typically one or two student representatives per classroom and one presiding set of officers (president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, etc.) However, many secondary schools have atleast one set of officers per grade level.
The student council helps share students’ ideas, interests, and concerns with other students, teachers and school principals. They also often organize fund raisers for school-wide activities, including social events, community projects and school reform.
swimsuit
At least one female character is wearing a swimsuit in this anime. Probably either at the beach or the school`s pool. And if the anime is ecchi the swimsuit will be daring!
wooden sword
The protagonist uses a wooden ("training") sword (bokutou) instead of a real one, like a katana. This does not reduce its effectiveness though.
