Asia Asia is the world`s largest and most populous continent. Comedy Anime whose central struggle causes hilarious results. These stories are built upon funny characters, situations and events. A comedy anime is laced with humour and sets out to provoke laughter from the audience.
Japanese humour can be a bit strange to westerners, so if you`re new to this type of humour, just bear with it; it`ll most likely grow on you if you`re a fan of other kinds of comedy. Earth That big mud ball that most of us live on. Ecchi Ecchi, or etchi (エッチ), is a common Japanese word meaning “indecent”, “lewd”, “frisky” or “sexy”, while its usage can be compared to the word “naughty”. The term is used when vague sexual content, such as skimpy clothing or nudity, is prominent. High School The upper-secondary education (not compulsory in Japan) covers the grades ten, eleven, and twelve. The students are typically fifteen to eighteen years old.
Anime centre on High School settings predominately: Plot/story-wise the coming of age is of interest - the students are almost adults (their bodies have matured, see ecchi anime) with more earnest, real-life problems. Japan Last stronghold for humanity, if Tokyo falls, it`s all over. Tokyo Tower will undoubtedly fall anyway. Love Polygon A love polygon refers to a romantic relationship involving n people. Although a love triangle is not limited to just heterosexual relationships, in anime, it usually deals with two females liking one male and vice versa. Original Work: Novel Note that novel means book with words in paper, so no comics and no "visual novels", which should go under manga and dating-sim - visual Novel/erotic game respectively.
Note that it can be applied to novels as we know them but also the typical light novels for teens and young adults, which are common in Japan and aside from being short include a number of illustrations. Parody Anime that imitate other stories (can be from TV, film, books, historical events, ...) for comic effect by exaggerating the style and changing the content of the original. Also known as spoofs. It can also refer to when whole elements of one work are lifted out of their context and reused. Proxy Battles In our terms, a proxy battle is a battle where humans use creatures/robots to do the fighting for them, either by commanding those creatures/robots or by simply evolving them/changing them into battle mode. Often the training aspect is also involved, or in some cases the proxies are nothing more than holographic representatives of some other variation of competition (like for example a card game). While many popular shounen anime fit under this category, it`s not limited to shounen anime. Romance Romance describes a story that deals with love between two or more characters typically also having an optimistic ending. Romance is also a difficulty encountered when creating a harem. School Life Since a large part of the anime audience still takes part in school life or is visiting college, it is only natural to choose a setting the audience can identify with, be it elementary, middle, or high school. For the older viewers a college setting with more mature real-life problems is appropriate. And since clubs take up so much time in the lives of students, these are obviously also important. Seinen A subset of anime or manga that is generally targeted at a 18 - 25 year old male audience, but the audience can be much older with some manga aimed at businessmen well into their 40s. Slapstick Slapstick humour is generally recognized by lots of physical abuse, horseplay and practical jokes. Also often seen are impossible situations, using sounds to illustrate impossible stunts that aren`t shown on-screen and to create tension for audience anticipation. Stereotypes Then there is the question of the character set presentation. Is it completely original, or is it your usual stereotypical character cast. Both choices have their merit, for example it would not really make much sense to reinvent the wheel for a harem anime. Fans of that genre come to expect their favourite stereotype protagonists. Time: Present Somewhere between past and future Violent Retribution for Accidental Infringement A comedy / slapstick element often found in Ecchi anime: The hilarity derives from spontaneous embarrassment, overreaction of the "victim" (girl), immediate retribution for a seemingly inappropriate act, and a sense of pity with the supposed "aggressor" (boy).
Typically a boy will - through no fault of his own - stumble into a girl, thus invading her personal space. In the process the boy may e.g. pull down her skirt, grab the girl`s breasts, or accidentally kiss her. Any level-headed girl would see the accident just for what it is. Not so the girl with an overly developed sense of modesty, and a thing for violence. She - often a tsundere - will clobber the boy with excessive brutality.

anything can be awesome Sometimes normal just doesn`t cut it, you need to make it awesome, no matter how mundane it is.
Let`s throw in some gripping orchestral music, lighting changes, different camera angles, something! Don`t write like a man, write like an Evil Overlord! Exaggerate your expressions and gestures, speak with excessive intonation, and if all else fails, throw in some close-ups, slow motion, and Ominous Latin Chanting! With practice, even you can turn something like eating chips into an epic battle of light and dark. battle uniforms The characters in this anime wear battle uniforms. beach episode Also known as umi episode. Every anime has to have them, episodes in which the characters for whatever reason end up going to the sea, ocean, random island or the local pond.
Usually used for fanservice purpose as it gives the staff the opportunity to draw the characters in swimsuits and raise the DVD sales.
The cheap version is the pool episode.
Other marginally less used variants of this are the onsen episode and the sentou episode, used when it is too cold for a beach/pool episode. breaking the fourth wall A situation where the boundary between fictional characters and the audience is broken. A common case where the fourth wall is broken is when a character reveals his or her awareness of the audience. Or when he or she mentions that they have not been in an episode and are now back again. breast fondling Part of the slapstick comedy in ecchi anime between female characters. E.g. a girl envious of another girl`s bust size may tease the latter via fondling. Usually playful and mischievous, not sexual.
Alas, now the tag can also imply "boob grabbing", where a male character will either accidentally or intentionally touch the breasts of a female. The former is a comedy element, as in "accidental infringement", the latter can be interpreted as a form of harassment. brother complex Usually when a sister takes a special interest in her brother. This may include being over-protective, displays of jealousy involving her brother and other girls or the need to make strong sexual advances towards her brother.
Outsiders who become aware of this will usually think of the situation along the lines of “that is just wrong”. As for the obsessive sibling, she most commonly thinks her relationship with her brother is wrong and just can not resist or just plain out wants him to herself without holding back.
In some cases the brother and sister are not actually related by blood, giving the final result of the story a stronger possibility that the sister will indeed end up winning over her brother’s heart. childhood friend Plot device: The usually main protagonist encounters or “lives with” a friend from childhood times. By default they have a very close relationship that usually interferers with other present-day relations.
Typical scenarios: Male protagonist has been looked after by the female childhood friend ever since they were kids, representing the default “girlfriend” in a harem anime. Or the childhood friend has been away in some other city or foreign country and suddenly returns surprising the main protagonist, who had almost forgotten about this friend (as in “Sudden Girlfriend Appearance”). In the latter case, protagonist and friend may be bound by some unreasonable “childhood promise”. cross-dressing Featuring character(s) who sometimes wear clothes traditionally worn by and associated with the opposite sex; typically a male who cross-dresses occasionally by habit or compulsion.
Cross-dressers often hide their cross-dressing identity for a long period of time and thus tend to become adept in accurately portraying the opposite sex in terms of voice, movement, behaviour, temperament, etc. Engrish Engrish is actually a mispronunciation of English, as can be the result of someone, who does not have English as their primary language of origin (such as Japanese or Chinese). Occasionally characters in the original Japanese dialogue version of an anime will speak in English... however; this often still requires the assistance of subtitles, for while the words are meant to be said in English, the sentence structure and letter pronunciation may still be strongly related to the person’s primary language. extreme wackiness The anime is not just a bit on the hysterical side, it is totally whacked out and over the top. A large amount of quick dialogues and much slapstick violence move the plot forward at a reckless pace.
All this can be hilarious, but may also make the anime hard to follow and potentially annoying after some time. fanservice `Fan Service` typically consists of a variety of racy or sexual content — usually female but sometimes male — aimed to catch the viewer`s attention, with something suggestive and generally `pleasing to the eyes`. More often than not this involves nudity, yet can simply have to do with panty shots / flashing of undergarments, bathing suits, the jiggling of breasts, or other such eye candy.
While the term is used primarily with respect to Japanese animation, any gratuitous content within entertainment may be considered to be `fan service`. funky German Someone or something speaks German in a hilarious way, e.g. the voice feedback of a magical weapon. gradient hair The phenomenon of a character`s hair having different colours fading into each other. idiotic yet lovable main character no description set yet nosebleed A comedy element: It is said that Asians, Japanese in this case, are more prone to nose bleeding when stressed or emotionally excited. As that may be, this physical display of excitement / emotions is used extensively in anime comedy.
Typically a male character will over-react to the presence of a bishoujo (beautiful girl), usually embarrassing himself and her. In rare cases there are also female characters who nosebleed, e.g. in the presence of a bishounen (handsome youth). The latter is actually funnier, because the female char suddenly loses her composure and poise.
Increasing the visual impact, "explosive nosebleeds" have become very popular in slapstick comedy. perverted side character no description set yet RPG elements The anime shows elements of a `R`ole `P`layer `G`ame, either as part of a parody or because the anime is actually based on an RPG.
Typical elements: When collecting items, beating opponents, or levelling up a distinct (often childishly sounding) sound cue is played. A HUD (`H`eads `U`p `D`isplay) may also be presenting in combat, showing vital player and "enemy" statistics.
Since this presents a dumbing down of the anime, and demonstrates a lack of ideas, such "inserts" tend to annoy quickly. sibling yin yang In real life, siblings hardly ever act the same. Fiction sometimes takes this to an extreme.
Enter Sibling Yin Yang, the occurrence of siblings that are nearly polar opposites. If he`s cool and reckless, she`s responsible and thoughtful. If she`s a spiky-haired hooligan, he`s the nerdy wimpy one. If he`s an immature brat, she`s... well, you get the picture. summoning Instances when a character calls-forth things of which they command to perform or assist with certain tasks or take place in battles. Most summons respond to the summoner as their master.
Summoning is common in "proxy battle" titles, where various creatures or robots/mechs are the most called upon. tsundere A character type (usually female), who is often easily agitated or combative, but other times is quite kind and caring, especially in situations involving a person they are (knowingly or unknowingly) attracted to. twins Twin siblings featured in the cast. violent female lead The female main character — though possibly quite cute and "nice" at times — is prone to violent behaviour, usually against some male character(s).
Often quite typical of a `tsundere`. violent retribution for ecchi behaviour One of the central vehicles of slapstick comedy with ecchi elements.
When one char misbehaves, or at least is perceived to do so, he/she gets reprimanded or whacked by another char — typically a tsundere — for ecchi (slightly perverted) behaviour. In this case it is *not* a reaction to *accidental* infringement, like tripping into cleavage.
As Asu no Yoichi! shows, the supposed "ecchi behaviour" of the male protagonist can also be over-interpreted by a tsundere. E.g. getting whacked for a nosebleed, when looking at a cute girl. yaoi subtext Actions between two male characters that could be taken as or misinterpreted as being amorous in nature. yuri subtext Actions between two female characters that could be taken as or misinterpreted as being amorous in nature.
