Action Action anime usually involve a fairly straightforward story of good guys versus bad guys, where most disputes are resolved by using physical force. It often contains a lot of shooting, explosions and fighting. Asia Asia is the world`s largest and most populous continent. Boing The sound breasts make when they bounce. Size may vary, but mainly involves larger breasts in tight or otherwise sexy clothing. Partial or complete exposure may occur, usually emphasizing the boing-effect as they come out. Not capable of bouncing means no boing. Comedy Anime whose central struggle causes hilarious results. These stories are built upon funny characters, situations and events. A comedy anime is laced with humour and sets out to provoke laughter from the audience.
Japanese humour can be a bit strange to westerners, so if you`re new to this type of humour, just bear with it; it`ll most likely grow on you if you`re a fan of other kinds of comedy. Contemporary Fantasy Magic and supernatural beings exist secretly in what is generally regarded as the real world. Such elements may have originated from another world. Stories where a modern-day character travels to an alternate fantasy world are not considered contemporary fantasy. Earth That big mud ball that most of us live on. Ecchi Ecchi, or etchi (エッチ), is a common Japanese word meaning “indecent”, “lewd”, “frisky” or “sexy”, while its usage can be compared to the word “naughty”. The term is used when vague sexual content, such as skimpy clothing or nudity, is prominent. Fantasy Imaginative or fanciful work, especially one dealing with supernatural elements and themes. Harem Harem anime is when three or more females that for some reason are in the presence of one male as a central plot element. Generally, both the girls` looks and personalities vary a lot, and most of them are interested in the one guy. Sometimes, none of the girls are really interested at first, so the protagonist has to build relationships with them. Ecchi pretty much can`t be avoided, and it`s typical to see the protagonist stamped as a pervert by some of the girls, whether he is one or not. A lot of harem anime were originally Visual Novels, since most Visual Novels revolve around controlling this one guy, trying to build a relationship with several girls.
In a story where there is one female and several good looking males it`s a "reverse harem" or "male harem". High School The upper-secondary education (not compulsory in Japan) covers the grades ten, eleven, and twelve. The students are typically fifteen to eighteen years old.
Anime centre on High School settings predominately: Plot/story-wise the coming of age is of interest - the students are almost adults (their bodies have matured, see ecchi anime) with more earnest, real-life problems. Japan Last stronghold for humanity, if Tokyo falls, it`s all over. Tokyo Tower will undoubtedly fall anyway. Love Polygon A love polygon refers to a romantic relationship involving n people. Although a love triangle is not limited to just heterosexual relationships, in anime, it usually deals with two females liking one male and vice versa. Original Work: Novel Note that novel means book with words in paper, so no comics and no "visual novels", which should go under manga and dating-sim - visual Novel/erotic game respectively.
Note that it can be applied to novels as we know them but also the typical light novels for teens and young adults, which are common in Japan and aside from being short include a number of illustrations. Parody Anime that imitate other stories (can be from TV, film, books, historical events, ...) for comic effect by exaggerating the style and changing the content of the original. Also known as spoofs. It can also refer to when whole elements of one work are lifted out of their context and reused. Proxy Battles In our terms, a proxy battle is a battle where humans use creatures/robots to do the fighting for them, either by commanding those creatures/robots or by simply evolving them/changing them into battle mode. Often the training aspect is also involved, or in some cases the proxies are nothing more than holographic representatives of some other variation of competition (like for example a card game). While many popular shounen anime fit under this category, it`s not limited to shounen anime. Romance Romance describes a story that deals with love between two or more characters typically also having an optimistic ending. Romance is also a difficulty encountered when creating a harem. School Life Since a large part of the anime audience still takes part in school life or is visiting college, it is only natural to choose a setting the audience can identify with, be it elementary, middle, or high school. For the older viewers a college setting with more mature real-life problems is appropriate. And since clubs take up so much time in the lives of students, these are obviously also important. Seinen A subset of anime or manga that is generally targeted at a 18 - 25 year old male audience, but the audience can be much older with some manga aimed at businessmen well into their 40s. Slapstick Slapstick humour is generally recognized by lots of physical abuse, horseplay and practical jokes. Also often seen are impossible situations, using sounds to illustrate impossible stunts that aren`t shown on-screen and to create tension for audience anticipation. Small Breasts Focus on flat-chested (pettanko) to slightly protruding breasts, often so mockingly or humorously. Usually involves children or adolescent girls. Stereotypes This show presents stereotypes, which are generalizations about a group of people. Examples would be saying that people from a certain country or with a certain hair color are stupid. If the show deals with comedy, the stereotypes are likely to be played on for laughs; if the show is a parody, the stereotypes will be exaggerated to have their flaws exposed and may be used as a form of social commentary. Super Deformed A caricature style often seen in anime when the character shows extreme emotions, like fear, anger, happiness, surprise, or shame. Seen as cute, as part of humorous comedy. The character`s face suddenly turns into a simplified version, the body will usually also deform into that of a small child (oversized head, short limbs, extra-large tears). Swordplay The act or art of using a sword or similar weapon skillfully. Time: Present Somewhere between past and future Violence Physical force against self or other, compelling action against one`s will on pain of being hurt.

befriend attack One character practically "pounces a hug" on another character.
Used as comedy element (slapstick) to demonstrate the exuberant affection of the (usually female) "pouncing" protagonist. childhood friend Plot device: The usually main protagonist encounters or “lives with” a friend from childhood times. By default they have a very close relationship that usually interferers with other present-day relations.
Typical scenarios: Male protagonist has been looked after by the female childhood friend ever since they were kids, representing the default “girlfriend” in a harem anime. Or the childhood friend has been away in some other city or foreign country and suddenly returns surprising the main protagonist, who had almost forgotten about this friend (as in “Sudden Girlfriend Appearance”). In the latter case, protagonist and friend may be bound by some unreasonable “childhood promise”. cross-dressing Featuring character(s) who sometimes wear clothes traditionally worn by and associated with the opposite sex; typically a male who cross-dresses occasionally by habit or compulsion.
Cross-dressers often hide their cross-dressing identity for a long period of time and thus tend to become adept in accurately portraying the opposite sex in terms of voice, movement, behaviour, temperament, etc. extreme wackiness The anime is not just a bit on the hysterical side, it is totally whacked out and over the top. A large amount of quick dialogues and much slapstick violence move the plot forward at a reckless pace.
All this can be hilarious, but may also make the anime hard to follow and potentially annoying after some time. gradient hair The phenomenon of a character`s hair having different colours fading into each other. guy running with toast in mouth For no apparent reason, other than as a comedy element, one of the male characters in the show runs around with a toast in his mouth.
Probably hints at the protagonist`s difficulty to get up on time, thus having to leave the dormitory/house in a haste to get to school. henshin Japanese for "transformation" (metamorphosis or disguise).
A "henshin anime" is any anime, where the characters or their costumes transform, such as Sailor Moon. The henshin switches on the character`s special powers, and is frequently accompanied by a costume change. Often the change of clothing is the only outward indicator that the character has changed and yet nobody seems to notice the hero`s true self.
Most henshin heroes have a special item which they use to change into their heroic form. These items are usually activated by a command phrase (which is often in Engrish, for some reason), triggering a transformation sequence. idiotic yet lovable main character no description set yet lethal cooking Some characters, most often than not the otherwise perfect beauty out of the main character`s harem, simply do not have any skills for cooking. Not only does anything they do turn out dangerously bad for anyone who dares to taste it, they also seem to ignite anything they try to cook, even when there is no fire or heat involved.
A common element in anime which most often comes together with a cooking episode where other characters try to teach said character much needed skills to cook. Needless to say, it usually fails. magic circles A circle used to contain magical energy and/or to provide magical protection. It can be drawn (with chalk etc.) or it can just spontaneously appear as part of the spell/ritual. monomaniacal girl with crush on female lead One of the female characters has a (generally unrequited) crush on the female lead. This crush dominates the characterization of this character. mood expressing hairpin A hairpin worn by a character that displays facial features that imitate its wearer.
Possible reasoning behind such an existence may lie between the need for additional comical elements or to add an extra feel of childishness to the owner. narration The most common example is that of a voice, either that of one of the characters or entirely unrelated, that appears at the beginning of an episode to offer a summary or introduction, and at the end of an episode for closure or for a preview to hint upon what to expect next.
Another use of narration comes in the form of a dominant voice belonging to one of the protagonists, intended only for the viewer and revealing the intimate thoughts to whom it belongs. This type of narration occurs frequently throughout the duration of the episode or movie. nosebleed A comedy element: It is said that Asians, Japanese in this case, are more prone to nose bleeding when stressed or emotionally excited. As that may be, this physical display of excitement / emotions is used extensively in anime comedy.
Typically a male character will over-react to the presence of a bishoujo (beautiful girl), usually embarrassing himself and her. In rare cases there are also female characters who nosebleed, e.g. in the presence of a bishounen (handsome youth). The latter is actually funnier, because the female char suddenly loses her composure and poise.
Increasing the visual impact, "explosive nosebleeds" have become very popular in slapstick comedy. onee-sama Onee-sama is a Japanese term which literally translates as respected elder sister, but can be used (especially by admirers) to refer to any young female. The onee-sama is always an older character, if only by a year. She is essentially a princess for the other characters with grace, beauty, and poise. An onee-sama usually meets her counterpart at some point in a story in the form of a charmingly imperfect girl who is too sweet, innocent, or clueless to be intimidated by her and merely wishes to make a new friend. Examples include the cast of Maria-sama ga Miteru, where most of the important characters are referred to in this way and Top wo Nerae! 1&2 where the protagonists of the story have the archetypical senpai-kouhai relationship. parental abandonment In Japan it is a common custom for parents to leave their children alone at home and embark on a lifelong trip around the world once they hit the tender age of 14, sometimes even earlier. pool episode An episode playing at the pool, mostly in school, sometimes outside of it when the cast does not have a chance for a beach episode.
Usually used for fanservice purpose as it gives the staff the opportunity to draw the characters in swimsuits and raise the DVD sales.
The cheap version of the beach episode.
Other variants are the onsen episode and the sentou episode. RPG elements The anime shows elements of a `R`ole `P`layer `G`ame, either as part of a parody or because the anime is actually based on an RPG.
Typical elements: When collecting items, beating opponents, or levelling up a distinct (often childishly sounding) sound cue is played. A HUD (`H`eads `U`p `D`isplay) may also be presenting in combat, showing vital player and "enemy" statistics.
Since this presents a dumbing down of the anime, and demonstrates a lack of ideas, such "inserts" tend to annoy quickly. summoning Instances when a character calls-forth things of which they command to perform or assist with certain tasks or take place in battles. Most summons respond to the summoner as their master.
Summoning is common in "proxy battle" titles, where various creatures or robots/mechs are the most called upon. surprisingly good Contrary to previous speculations or in spite of reviews, some would say the anime is not as bad as one might have originally thought it would be.
Example: Someone hates horror anime, but watches it anyway. Finds the level of horror bearable and is really surprised how well the backgrounds, story and characters mix to create a really interesting — usually way above average — viewing experience. tsundere A character type (usually female), who is often easily agitated or combative, but other times is quite kind and caring, especially in situations involving a person they are (knowingly or unknowingly) attracted to. twins Twin siblings featured in the cast. unending laughter One joke chases the next in quick succession, leaving the viewer no time for a breather. yaoi subtext Actions between two male characters that could be taken as or misinterpreted as being amorous in nature. yuri subtext Actions between two female characters that could be taken as or misinterpreted as being amorous in nature.
