Azumanga Daioh was originally serialized in the very popular "Electric Shock Daioh" manga. The story revolves around high school girls. Each one of the main character has a colourful and attractive personality for comic fans, such as gifted 10-year-old high school girl, cool high school girl, natural high school girl, high school girl with glasses, and weird older teachers.
Based on a four panel comic, each part - at around five minutes - is rather short. Every episode is split into five parts, making a total of 130 parts over 26 episodes. Azumanga Daioh also appeared as a short online movie, known as Azumanga Web Daioh. Apparently, they were also giving out a free DVD of a short movie in the March and April edition of the Dengeki Daioh magazine.

Asia is the world`s largest and most populous continent.
Comedy
Anime whose central struggle causes hilarious results. These stories are built upon funny characters, situations and events. A comedy anime is laced with humour and sets out to provoke laughter from the audience.
Japanese humour can be a bit strange to westerners, so if you`re new to this type of humour, just bear with it; it`ll most likely grow on you if you`re a fan of other kinds of comedy.
Coming of Age
In the strict sense the Coming of age describes a young person`s transition from adolescence to adulthood. In anime the term is used in a more general sense where the protagonists have to face a challenge, make an important decision in their life, take on responsibility, or learn a lesson, and by overcoming these obstacles they reach a higher level of maturity.
Daily Life
The antics of the protagonists do not take place in some exotic setting or time, but in everyday life. When not "at the job" this means getting up in the morning, making meals, house cleaning, going shopping or out to eat, visiting the bath house or spa, leisure activities in the spare time, etc. The time "on the job" for students is School Life, for others working in their profession. Daily Life is basically a synonym for everything normal, repetitive, and trivial happening to your average person.
Earth
That big mud ball that most of us live on.
High School
The upper-secondary education (not compulsory in Japan) covers the grades ten, eleven, and twelve. The students are typically fifteen to eighteen years old.
Anime centre on High School settings predominately: Plot/story-wise the coming of age is of interest - the students are almost adults (their bodies have matured, see ecchi anime) with more earnest, real-life problems.
Japan
Last stronghold for humanity, if Tokyo falls, it`s all over. Tokyo tower will undoubtedly fall anyway.
Original Work: Manga
Manga is the lifeblood that drives the anime industry. Everything and its mother is based on manga. However! There are exceptions where the manga was not the basis for the anime.
It`s common practice to make manga adaptations of many popular anime, there`s a manga based on Evangelion, and two (one shounen and one shoujo) based on each of Escaflowne and Mahou Tsukai Tai. Also it`s quite common to release manga and anime versions of a story in parallel, for instance Nadesico and Shoujo Kakumei Utena. There are also cases where an anime continues in a manga, or reverse, as in the case of Angel Beats! and Angel Beats: Heaven`s Door.
Plot Continuity
Consistency of the characteristics of persons, plot, objects, places and events seen by the viewer.
A single linear focused plot is highly continuous.
A truly random plot is highly discontinuous.
Romance
Romance describes a story that deals with love between two or more characters typically also having an optimistic ending.
School Life
Since a large part of the anime audience still takes part in school life or is visiting college, it is only natural to choose a setting the audience can identify with, be it elementary, middle, or high school. For the older viewers a college setting with more mature real-life problems is appropriate. And since clubs take up so much time in the lives of students, these are obviously also important.
Seinen
A subset of anime or manga that is generally targeted at a 18 - 25 year old male audience, but the audience can be much older with some manga aimed at businessmen well into their 40s.
Shoujo Ai
Shoujo Ai means girls love, and as such it explores what happens when two girls (or women) fall in love. This is not to be mistaken for Yuri which is a hentai genre. This is not. Meaning no graphical sex.
Slapstick
Slapstick humour is generally recognized by lots of physical abuse, horseplay and practical jokes. Also often seen are impossible situations, using sounds to illustrate impossible stunts that aren`t shown on-screen and to create tension for audience anticipation.
Sports
Sports anime revolves around a recreational physical activity or skill. In addition they often adhere to certain genre conventions, the emphasis on training and practice in preparation for competition, characters desire for self improvement, and pursuit of a specific goal.
Stereotypes
Then there is the question of the character set presentation. Is it completely original, or is it your usual stereotypical character cast. Both choices have their merit, for example it would not really make much sense to reinvent the wheel for a harem anime. Fans of that genre come to expect their favourite stereotype protagonists.
Super Deformed
A caricature style often seen in anime when the character shows extreme emotions, like fear, anger, happiness, surprise, or shame. Seen as cute, as part of humorous comedy. The character`s face suddenly turns into a simplified version, the body will usually also deform into that of a small child (oversized head, short limbs, extra-large tears).

4-koma
Based on a 4 panel manga.
all-female cast
All primary characters are female. Male characters, if any, will only have minor roles or be entirely absent from the story`s focus.
beach episode
Also known as umi episode. Every anime has to have them, episodes in which the characters for whatever reason end up going to the sea, ocean, random island or the local pond.
Usually used for fanservice purpose as it gives the staff the opportunity to draw the characters in swimsuits and raise the DVD sales.
The cheap version is the pool episode.
Other marginally less used variants of this are the onsen episode and the sentou episode, used when it is too cold for a beach/pool episode.
cat
Independent animal of the feline sort. Not to be confused with dogs.
children
The anime also features children.
Cloudcuckoolander
A character with their head in the clouds (most of the time), not completely sane, yet quite intelligent. Usually he or she has a vast knowledge... but on the wrong subject. They question things that everyone else takes for granted. Examples of such characters would be Osaka from Azumanga Daio, Tsukasa from Lucky Star or Kafuka from Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei.
Engrish
Engrish is actually a mispronunciation of English, as can be the result of someone who does not have English as their primary language of origin (such as Japanese or Chinese). Occasionally characters in the original Japanese dialogue version of an anime will speak in English... however; this often still requires the assistance of subtitles, for while the words are meant to be said in English, the sentence structure and letter pronunciation may still be strongly relative to the person`s primary language.
episodic
The episodes do not present a continuous storyline, but an episodic one. The characters and setting stay the same, and each episode (or sub-episodic segment) presents a new short story.
faito!
A comedy element: Japanese pronunciation of the English word "fight" (also spelled "fighto" or "fight-o"). Initially called out to start off some martial arts 1-on-1 battle.
The term now is very popular with the (usually female) high school students in anime. Used as an exclamation of encouragement to a fellow student.
Example: A girl may want to confess her love to a boy, her female friends will then spur her on with a "faito".
This can - at times - be quite amusing, when the encouragement is used in situations where a strong will to persevere will certainly not help.
E.g. a female student comments on a friend`s flat-chestedness, wanting to encourage bust growth: "Faito!"
friendship
The feeling of trust, kindness, and friendship between a group of high school students for example, is a central theme of this anime.
genius
A gifted and very intelligent character. Usually way smarter than any fellow student of that age.
hyperactive friend
A comedy element: A friend - usually of the main protagonist - is very excitable, and sometimes literally bounces all over the place. A real energy bundle, a loose cannon.
immature teacher
Contains one or more teachers who are more childish and irresponsible than the kids they teach.
incredibly stupid but surprisingly funny
Whoever s for this tag, does not think much of the intellectual qualities of this anime, but will tolerate that shortcoming, because the anime is nonetheless a source of amusement.
Kansai-ben
The Kansai-ben is a distinct group of related Japanese dialects found in the Kansai region of Japan. They are typified by the speech of Osaka, which is referred to specifically as Osaka-ben. It is characterized as being both more melodic and harsher by speakers of the standard language.
Note: Accent from the Kansai region of Japan, treated similarly to a southern accent in the US.
karaoke
Obligatory national pastime for students in any anime with school setting. Amateur singing to subtitled music videos.
klutz
As part of the slapstick comedy in anime there often is a character (usually female), who is particularly clumsy, i.e. tripping, bumping into objects, or dropping things. This lack of physical coordination is thought of as endearing.
Osaka
Osaka is a city in Japan (Kansai region, on main island of Honshu).
overly enthusiastic friend
As comic relief, a friend will often show extreme enthusiasm towards anything the lead character does. This can be boundless admiration for physically abilities (e.g. sports), looks (e.g. "nice body"), or other skills, to the point that the lead character is quite often publicly embarrassed by this behaviour.
Note: This friend is not necessarily a sidekick, simply one out a of a group of friends.
perverted teacher
Supposedly added as a comedy element: A teacher exhibits slightly perverted tendencies.
Like a male teacher with a high school girl fetish or a female teacher who likes to pose in class wearing frilly underwear.
pool episode
An episode playing at the pool, mostly in school, sometimes outside of it when the cast does not have a chance for a beach episode.
Usually used for fanservice purpose as it gives the staff the opportunity to draw the characters in swimsuits and raise the DVD sales.
The cheap version of the beach episode.
Other variants are the onsen episode and the sentou episode.
randomness
The anime does not follow a predictable storyline. New, strange, obscure, or otherwise unexpected story elements are introduced at a whim.
school festival
The obligatory school (or culture) festival with cosplay cafe, haunted house, theatre performance, and food booths cannot be missing in any school setting.
For good measure there may also be an athletics or sports festival in this anime.
spacing out
A comedy element: The character starts to daydream or fantasize about some topic. The typical complete lack of reality makes the spacing out funny. Especially when the protagonist mumbles to himself / herself and friends hear this. Promptly teasing the possibly lovestruck and very embarrassed protagonist.
wordplay
The chars play with words. E.g. purposely or accidentally use similar-sounding but wrongly applied words in the Japanese original, leading to supposedly funny misunderstandings and confusion.
