Mecha Mecha in Japanese basically means mechanical things; everything from an electric whisk or a car to a spaceship or a robot. Here however we limit it to the more exotic things usually referred to as mecha anime: robots, whether controlled by a human or not, and their ilk. Piloted Robots Piloted Robots are, as the name suggests, robots that cannot control themselves; they need to be steered from somewhere, this can be from a human sitting inside or a remote controlled option. Shounen A style of anime and manga intended for boys, characterized by high-action, often humorous plots featuring male protagonists. The camaraderie between boys or men on sports teams, fighting squads, etc. is often emphasized. Unrealistically attractive female characters are also common (see fanservice), but are not a requirement. The art style of shounen also tends to be less flowery than that of shoujo. Time: Future Anime that fall under the future category are the ones that have a society that could have originated from ours. In most cases it should go hand to hand with sci-fi since we expect the future to consist of advanced technology, however, in the case where it`s explicitly stated in the story that the anime takes place "x years into the future", the state of technology doesn`t matter as long as it`s long into the future. The anime can be set in an alternative universe not tied with our own, as long as it has a futuristic feel to it.
This category sports quite a lot of anime, mostly stemming from SciFi, but not necessarily only from there. Transforming Robots Transforming Robots includes mecha that change shape from their original either to facilitate better/different functionality or as camouflage.

Feelings of any kind towards other characters are best shown by calling each other`s name, loud, REALLY LOUD. For better effect at least twice or thrice. For lover`s couples and mortal enemies it is a requirement to run towards each other while calling each other`s name, unaware of the surroundings. child soldiers Untrained and as yet immature, children are expediently thrust into the role of warriors to protect god, king, and country. Not having even finished school, they are inexplicably designated to elite status or roles, typically requiring months of training and years of experience. All the more so with "experimental" equipment or weapons of mass destruction. collateral damage The usually action orientated anime does not only show large amounts of combat and weapon use, but also the incidental massive destruction of property, often due to the inability of the protagonists to aim properly.
Example: Mecha duking it out in a densely populated urban area. comic relief animal sidekick Every mahou shoujo anime needs them, the cute little critters that are supposed to help the protagonists but in reality are nothing but useless bystanders most often abused for gags. Kids love them but they can also often turn into an annoyance. contrived melodrama The situations in this drama are blown out of proportion, and to make things worse these are totally unnatural and forced. Hairraisingly irrational situations have been fabricated in a desperate attempt to be original. donuts Donuts play a mildly relevant role in this anime, be it as fattening food in gluttony, or some obscure philosophy.
A deep-fried piece of dough or batter, commonly made in a toroidal or ellipsoidal shape, and mixed with various sweeteners and flavors, sometimes filled with jelly, custard or cream. (AmE, Source: Wiktionary) flashback The characters remember things from their past triggering a flashback. The anime either repeats scenes from previous episodes (danger of too many "fillers"), or actually shows new footage from very old memories. henshin Japanese for "transformation" (metamorphosis or disguise).
A "henshin anime" is any anime, where the characters or their costumes transform, such as Sailor Moon. The henshin switches on the character`s special powers, and is frequently accompanied by a costume change. Often the change of clothing is the only outward indicator that the character has changed and yet nobody seems to notice the hero`s true self.
Most henshin heroes have a special item which they use to change into their heroic form. These items are usually activated by a command phrase (which is often in Engrish, for some reason), triggering a transformation sequence. outstanding backgrounds The backgrounds are breathtakingly detailed, colourful and realistic. Lights and shadows, reflections and surfaces have been crafted to create believable sceneries that are stunningly beautiful. protection complex A main character will be practically obsessed with the protection of one or more other characters. This desire to protect may be so strong, it could unconsciously subject and influence the character`s attitude and behaviour towards situations or other people in general. The obsessive protector will feel it is their mission in life to protect the other character, possibly viewing themselves as worthless or a failure if that single duty is to be slightly off from perfection. random cliche compilation The anime is severely lacking in the originality department: Story, characters, setting, and designs seem to have been "borrowed" from previous anime shows, to some degree.
A little more creativity and original ideas would have helped the anime be less generic. ridiculous premise The principal ideas used to set up the overall story are questionable at best, and are difficult to accept as rational.
It seems that the writers involved in this anime were desperate to find a new idea, creating an outlandish story background. Such an irrational plot can become quite irritating. sexual innuendo References to actions and/or situations of an intimate or sexual nature. skimpy clothing most fit for the job When a job needs to get done you need the appropriate clothing on the appropriate persons. That calls for preferably scantily clad young ladies. Spies will dress in sexy outfits, even when the mission explicitly calls for them to not to be noticed. Female warriors will charge into battle wearing armour that does not protect the vital organs. Bridge officers on a military starship will be issued go-go boots with their uniforms. Examples are the women in VanDread, AIKa or the most famous incarnation of that tag, the Strike Witches and their precursor the Sky Girls. sociocultural evolution Describes how cultures and societies develop over time, based on both cultural evolution and social evolution.
A post-apocalyptic or an Utopian setting would show very interesting changes in human behaviour, mental state, or simply daily life. zettai ryouiki Japanese for "absolute area", and refers to an area of bare skin on the legs between a skirt and knee- or thigh-high stockings.
