As far back as Suzuki Nana could remember, her grandfather wanted to capture the rainbow. After years of fruitless tinkering he finally discovered a crystal that would separate the light from a rainbow into its seven basic colours. The experiment only needed to bake for another few seconds. And that is when Nana accidentally opened the microwave...

Americas The Americas are the lands of the Western hemisphere or (generally) the New World, consisting of the continents of North America and South America with their associated islands and regions. Angst A feeling of general discomfort and uneasiness is present due to either trivial or more serious reasons, often accompanied by depression.
Warning: may contain copious amounts of brooding and sighing. Asia Asia is the world`s largest and most populous continent. Comedy Anime whose central struggle causes hilarious results. These stories are built upon funny characters, situations and events. A comedy anime is laced with humour and sets out to provoke laughter from the audience.
Japanese humour can be a bit strange to westerners, so if you`re new to this type of humour, just bear with it; it`ll most likely grow on you if you`re a fan of other kinds of comedy. Coming of Age In the strict sense the Coming of age describes a young person`s transition from adolescence to adulthood. In anime the term is used in a more general sense where the protagonists have to face a challenge, make an important decision in their life, take on responsibility, or learn a lesson, and by overcoming these obstacles they reach a higher level of maturity. Cooking Anime in the cooking genre will centre on the production of different kinds of food, including baking, but also gourmet meals and anything in between. Daily Life The antics of the protagonists do not take place in some exotic setting or time, but in everyday life. When not "at the job" this means getting up in the morning, making meals, house cleaning, going shopping or out to eat, visiting the bath house or spa, leisure activities in the spare time, etc. The time "on the job" for students is School Life, for others working in their profession. Daily Life is basically a synonym for everything normal, repetitive, and trivial happening to your average person. Earth That big mud ball that most of us live on. Japan Last stronghold for humanity, if Tokyo falls, it`s all over. Tokyo Tower will undoubtedly fall anyway. Love Polygon A love polygon refers to a romantic relationship involving n people. Although a love triangle is not limited to just heterosexual relationships, in anime, it usually deals with two females liking one male and vice versa. Magic In a traditional Fantasy anime with medieval setting, the lack of technology is "compensated" by the introduction of the supernatural, i.e. spell-casting, magic wands, and magic circles.
In another setting long-lost technology may be so advanced that it is mistaken for magic (Arthur C. Clarke: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic"). See also related tag: science and magic coexist. Mahou Shoujo Magical girls (known in Japan as majokko, and in the West as mahou shoujo) refers to young girls with superhuman abilities, usually involving magic and transformations. Martial Arts Characterized by extensive fighting scenes employing various types of martial arts, meaning systems of codified practices and traditions of training for combat. Middle School Also referred to as junior high school (or lower-secondary education; compulsory in Japan) covers the grades seven, eight, and nine. The students are typically twelve to fifteen years old.
Anime with school setting centre on Middle School students when younger, possibly more naive and `innocent` (less worldly wise) characters are required. Parody Anime that imitate other stories (can be from TV, film, books, historical events, ...) for comic effect by exaggerating the style and changing the content of the original. Also known as spoofs. It can also refer to when whole elements of one work are lifted out of their context and reused. Plot Continuity Consistency of the characteristics of persons, plot, objects, places and events seen by the viewer.
A single linear focused plot is highly continuous.
A truly random plot is highly discontinuous. Romance Romance describes a story that deals with love between two or more characters typically also having an optimistic ending. Romance is also a difficulty encountered when creating a harem. School Life Since a large part of the anime audience still takes part in school life or is visiting college, it is only natural to choose a setting the audience can identify with, be it elementary, middle, or high school. For the older viewers a college setting with more mature real-life problems is appropriate. And since clubs take up so much time in the lives of students, these are obviously also important. Slapstick Slapstick humour is generally recognized by lots of physical abuse, horseplay and practical jokes. Also often seen are impossible situations, using sounds to illustrate impossible stunts that aren`t shown on-screen and to create tension for audience anticipation. Stereotypes Then there is the question of the character set presentation. Is it completely original, or is it your usual stereotypical character cast. Both choices have their merit, for example it would not really make much sense to reinvent the wheel for a harem anime. Fans of that genre come to expect their favourite stereotype protagonists. Super Deformed A caricature style often seen in anime when the character shows extreme emotions, like fear, anger, happiness, surprise, or shame. Seen as cute, as part of humorous comedy. The character`s face suddenly turns into a simplified version, the body will usually also deform into that of a small child (oversized head, short limbs, extra-large tears). Super Power Be it an ancient Greek Heracles, a cybernetic muscle-man, or a fourteen year-old girl in a mini-skirted sailor suit. As long as they have super powers, they`re in the show. Time: Present Somewhere between past and future Twisted Twisted indicates more than one abrupt change in plot or story. This derivation from strict linear storytelling usually makes these anime hard to follow, and at times even very confusing when several parallel plots intertwine. United States The United States of America (commonly referred to as the United States, the U.S., the USA, or America) is a federal constitutional republic comprising fifty states and a federal district.

bullying classmates Out of sheer spite or because one of the main characters is different in some way ("conformity über alles") several classmates will keep on picking on the protagonist. This can go right up to physical violence — despicable!
Technically this would be considered extremely bad manners and a grave lack of upbringing in Japanese society, but then again humans are humans. Christmas This anime is about Christmas or has an episode relating to Christmas, often including the decoration of the Christmas tree, the shopping for and the handing out of presents, and an extra special opulent dinner (a Christmas party). No Christmas is complete without the falling of snow — for those romantic moments. clone One or more genetic duplicates of sentient beings, usually of humans, appear in the show. confession Someone confesses his/her love to someone else.
In a school setting it will usually be a boy confessing his love to a girl, though the more modern Japanese girls in anime will do quite a bit of confessing as well.
Since this is anime, girl/girl (shoujo ai) or boy/boy (shounen ai) confessions also happen. cooking episode no description set yet faito! A comedy element: Japanese pronunciation of the English word "fight" (also spelled "fighto" or "fight-o"). Initially called out to start off some martial arts 1-on-1 battle.
The term now is very popular with the (usually female) high school students in anime. Used as an exclamation of encouragement to a fellow student.
Example: A girl may want to confess her love to a boy, her female friends will then spur her on with a "faito".
This can — at times — be quite amusing, when the encouragement is used in situations where a strong will to persevere will certainly not help. E.g. a female student comments on a friend`s flat-chested-ness, wanting to encourage bust growth: "Faito!" flashback The characters remember things from their past triggering a flashback. The anime either repeats scenes from previous episodes (danger of too many "fillers"), or actually shows new footage from very old memories. following one`s dream No matter what the hardships may be, at least one of the protagonists in this anime is following her/his dream.
Examples: To become a professional athlete, or a musician, or a painter. ghost girl As the name suggests it refers to that the anime in question have one or more female ghost or ghostlike creatures in it. Ghost girls are often found in anime with a darker theme or in special episodes that are meant to be scary, this is however not always the case, since it is not uncommon for a ghost to be a comical character or just a cute sidekick. girl running with toast in mouth For no apparent reason, other than as a comedy element, one of the female characters in the show runs around with a toast in her mouth.
Probably hints at the protagonist`s difficulty to get up on time, thus having to leave the dormitory/house in a haste to get to school. great animation The anime sports exceptionally well made (smooth, detailed, beautiful) animation. I gotta crush on you It happens when a person develops an interest in someone that seems mysterious, smart, sexy, cute, fun, etc. Basically just someone you would like to spend more time with. Crushes are usually one sided and they happen more frequently among middle and high school students.
A person with a crush usually has a hard time expressing or conveying his/her feelings to that other person. That other person is usually clueless of the situation. Sometimes that person knows about the crush, but feels annoyed or embarrassed by it for some reason.
Having a crush on someone does not mean you are in love with that person, at least not yet. Depending on the situation crushes could develop differently (for better or worse):
1) Larger scale interactions (love).
2) Dating relationships.
3) Scary obsession or stalker type situations.
4) Disappear over time or distance. parental abandonment In Japan it is a common custom for parents to leave their children alone at home and embark on a lifelong trip around the world once they hit the tender age of 14, sometimes even earlier. rock-paper-scissors Whenever a decision has to be made in anime, the Japanese protagonists seem to be awfully fond of playing rock-paper-scissors (or jan-ken-pon) to determine the outcome. sakura Sakura is the Japanese name for cherry trees, and their blossoms.
Sakura is an omen of good fortune and is also an emblem of love, affection and represents spring. Cherry blossoms are richly symbolic, they are an enduring metaphor for the fleeting nature of life, and as such are frequently depicted Japanese art, manga, anime, and film.
Sakura are object of the Japanese traditional custom of Hanami or Flower viewing. school excursion True for almost all anime with school setting, there will be a school excursion or field trip. Tokyo and Kyoto seem to be particularly popular as sightseeing destinations. So are hiking excursions into the local mountains. This also is a good excuse to present the prefecture`s / city`s food specialities.
Potential for ecchi moments: Obviously the "boys" will get all sorts of ideas with the "girls" sleeping so close by. schoolgirl A female protagonist who attends school, usually 6 to 18 years of age. sense of foreboding The anime starts off quietly, everything seems to be fine, but from episode to episode the signs that something ominous is about to happen increase. E.g. a typical mystery setting. summer At least one of the episodes takes place in summer. Think oppressively warm weather, summer vacation, summer school, summer festival, or a visit to the beach. summer festival The summer festival is used to show off the female protagonists in traditional Japanese clothing — the yukata — a casual form of kimono.
The festivities include food stalls (cotton candy, candy apples, choco bananas, taiyaki), various games (scoop goldfishes), and a fireworks display. tedious story development The flow of the story is like syrup, it sticks to everything and does not get anywhere. The simplest plot elements are dragged out across many episodes, thus unnecessarily prolonging the story, making the viewing experience tedious. test of courage As part of a summer excursion or festival, an anime with school setting may also have a "test of courage" (or "kimodameshi" in Japanese), where the male and female students are paired up (by lottery) to retrieve a "charm" by passing though a "haunted house" or a scary forest at night. Valentine`s Day The day Japanese girls/women give their "loved ones" chocolate presents.
In a school setting there is quite a difference between receiving honmei-chocolate, and giri-chocolate. The former is a sign of "love" or affection, the latter is simply a "mandatory" sign of compassion towards a friend or college. visually stunning The visuals — i.e. settings, backgrounds, characters — are absolutely breathtakingly beautiful.
This may come as all the more surprising, when a TV series or OVA sports the quality usually only associated with expensive anime movies. watercolour style The anime mainly uses watercolours — usually in faded pastels — for all the backgrounds, giving the show a warm and friendly visual presentation.
