Ouran High School is a school for the extremely wealthy or talented. Haruhi just happens to be more talented than wealthy. Since she had a hair mishap the week before school started and could not afford the school uniform, she was mistaken for a boy.
Wandering into the Third Music Room looking for a quiet place to study, she encounters the school's Host Club — a group of attractive young men who give their time and affections to females, for a fee. After she breaks an ¥8,000,000 vase belonging to the host club, the leader demands that she work off the money by becoming a host. And when they find out Haruhi is not actually a boy, humour ensues.
Categories Asia Asia is the world`s largest and most populous continent. Bishounen Young man whose beauty (and sexual appeal) transcends the boundary of gender or sexual orientation. Clubs Even though school clubs in Japan are not mandatory, there is some pressure from the social grid (e.g. fellow students, teachers) to participate in some kind of after-school activity, be it in sports or arts. Colleges also have clubs. As a comedy element in anime, some students have joined too many clubs, and are thus constantly stressed out. There is also the element of social commentary, making it clear that you have to join a club, if you want to be part of the class. Since self-founded clubs need at least 3 members, the desperate search and advertising for new members can be cause for hilarity in anime. Comedy Anime whose central struggle causes hilarious results. These stories are built upon funny characters, situations and events. A comedy anime is laced with humour and sets out to provoke laughter from the audience. Japanese humour can be a bit strange to westerners, so if you`re new to this type of humour, just bear with it; it`ll most likely grow on you if you`re a fan of other kinds of comedy. Earth That big mud ball that most of us live on. Ecchi Ecchi, or etchi (エッチ), is a common Japanese word meaning “indecent”, “lewd”, “frisky” or “sexy”, while its usage can be compared to the word “naughty”. The term is used when vague sexual content, such as skimpy clothing or nudity, is prominent. High School The upper-secondary education (not compulsory in Japan) covers the grades ten, eleven, and twelve. The students are typically fifteen to eighteen years old. Anime centre on High School settings predominately: Plot/story-wise the coming of age is of interest - the students are almost adults (their bodies have matured, see ecchi anime) with more earnest, real-life problems. Japan Last stronghold for humanity, if Tokyo falls, it`s all over. Tokyo tower will undoubtedly fall anyway. Middle School Also referred to as junior high school (or lower-secondary education; compulsory in Japan) covers the grades seven, eight, and nine. The students are typically twelve to fifteen years old. Anime with school setting centre on Middle School students when younger, possibly more naive and `innocent` (less worldly wise) characters are required. Original Work: Manga Manga is the lifeblood that drives the anime industry. Everything and its mother is based on manga. However! There are exceptions where the manga was not the basis for the anime. It`s common practice to make manga adaptations of many popular anime, there`s a manga based on Evangelion, and two (one shounen and one shoujo) based on each of Escaflowne and Mahou Tsukai Tai. Also it`s quite common to release manga and anime versions of a story in parallel, for instance Nadesico and Shoujo Kakumei Utena. There are also cases where an anime continues in a manga, or reverse, as in the case of Angel Beats! and Angel Beats: Heaven`s Door. Parody Anime that imitate other stories (can be from TV, film, books, historical events, ...) for comic effect by exaggerating the style and changing the content of the original. Also known as spoofs. It can also refer to when whole elements of one work are lifted out of their context and reused. Plot Continuity Consistency of the characteristics of persons, plot, objects, places and events seen by the viewer. A single linear focused plot is highly continuous. A truly random plot is highly discontinuous. Romance Romance describes a story that deals with love between two or more characters typically also having an optimistic ending. Romance is also a difficulty encountered when creating a harem. School Life Since a large part of the anime audience still takes part in school life or is visiting college, it is only natural to choose a setting the audience can identify with, be it elementary, middle, or high school. For the older viewers a college setting with more mature real-life problems is appropriate. And since clubs take up so much time in the lives of students, these are obviously also important. Shoujo A style of anime and manga intended for girls which may have some crossover appeal to boys as well. Shounen Ai Shounen Ai means boys love, and thus explores what happens when two boys (or men) fall in love. This is not to be mistaken for Yaoi which is a hentai genre. This is not. Meaning no graphical sex. Slapstick Slapstick humour is generally recognized by lots of physical abuse, horseplay and practical jokes. Also often seen are impossible situations, using sounds to illustrate impossible stunts that aren`t shown on-screen and to create tension for audience anticipation. Stereotypes Then there is the question of the character set presentation. Is it completely original, or is it your usual stereotypical character cast. Both choices have their merit, for example it would not really make much sense to reinvent the wheel for a harem anime. Fans of that genre come to expect their favourite stereotype protagonists. Sudden Girlfriend Appearance Sudden Girlfriend Appearance anime involve a sudden change in the main character`s life where (s)he suddenly gets confronted with an individual (s)he`s sexually attracted to, the two of them inevitable becoming a couple. Super Deformed A caricature style often seen in anime when the character shows extreme emotions, like fear, anger, happiness, surprise, or shame. Seen as cute, as part of humorous comedy. The character`s face suddenly turns into a simplified version, the body will usually also deform into that of a small child (oversized head, short limbs, extra-large tears). Time: Present Somewhere between past and future Traps A male character often mistaken as a female by other characters and/or the viewer due to his feminine appearance, behaviour, and/or language (regardless of his intention). Yakuza Yakuza, also known as the Japanese Mafia, refers to traditional organized crime groups in Japan and members thereof. They have a hierarchical structure, with the "oyabun", the family head, standing on top. They also have their own code, the "jingi", where loyalty and respect are a way of life. Yakuza members are identifiable for their, often full-body, tattoos and missing fingers, a result of the yubitsume ritual, which is a form of penance or apology. Tags banana peel Used as slapstick comedy element in this anime: At least one of the characters in this anime will slip on a banana peel, leading to humorous or even ecchi situations. beach episode Also known as umi episode. Every anime has to have them, episodes in which the characters for whatever reason end up going to the sea, ocean, random island or the local pond.
Usually used for fanservice purpose as it gives the staff the opportunity to draw the characters in swimsuits and raise the DVD sales.
The cheap version is the pool episode.
Other marginally less used variants of this are the onsen episode and the sentou episode, used when it is too cold for a beach/pool episode. beautiful people club Who needs ugly people, not this show! breaking the fourth wall A situation where the boundary between fictional characters and the audience is broken. A common case where the fourth wall is broken is when a character reveals his or her awareness of the audience. Or when he or she mentions that they have not been in an episode and are now back again. cosplay The act of dressing or disguising oneself as (but not limited to) a character, occupation, animal, or a combination of such things that are non relative to what would be considered natural characteristics of them.
Well known feminine cosplay examples consist of (but not nearly limited to) rare yet honorary or well respected occupations such as nurses, maids or shrine-priestesses. with the most portrayed animal crossover being the infamous cat-girl. Character cosplays consist primarily of characters from anime, manga, or video-games. creepy laugh At least one character in the show inexplicably and repetitively seems to have the urgent need to laugh in a creepy, loud and usually very annoying way.
For male bad guys this seems to be a must, but some of the uppity (rich) female characters use the laugh as part of their condescending attitude as well. cross-dressing Describes a person who takes on the role of their opposite gender, physically involving appearance and clothing only. The cross-dressing person, usually intending to keep their true identity secret for a long duration of time, tends to become well adapt in portraying their disguise, for example in voice, action/reaction, likes/dislikes, movements, etc. dear mother in heaven no description set yet female protagonist These anime have a female protagonist. first kiss The first kiss plays a role in this anime. Especially for the female cast this can be quite an important moment, so that stealing ones first kiss is serious for them. gender bender Term used to refer to a person who takes on the role of their opposite gender. This often only reaches to the extent of cross-dressing (involving physical appearance and clothing only), but in rarer cases, involves a total gender swap (which seems to be more common in anime) - where the willing or unwilling victim receives a body opposite of their original gender (either permanently or temporarily), with all natural parts per their new body fully (or just all-out amply) included.
Example of cross-dressing gender bender: "Maria Holic" Examples of body-swap gender bender: "Kashimashi: Girl meets Girl", "Birdy the Mighty Decode" grandiose displays of wealth Some of the characters in this anime come from very wealthy families. A huge estate with large mansion or castle, a flotilla of expensive cars, private jets or islands, and many servants will impress the viewer profoundly. high-class world Some of the characters in this anime live in a "high-class world". Usually this means that, they are rich and/or quite influential. instant fan club A character is considered so awesome that not only do they have notable admirers, but their fans become organized in such a fashion to have a following that could only be guaranteed in real life by precise and long increments of paparazzi-like stalking.
If the character is sufficiently cool this may happen practically overnight (i.e., within a few episodes of them being introduced), although the subject of admiration typically has mixed feelings about the entire affair. massive debt no description set yet moe Moe refers to characters (most often female) whose cute, innocent mannerisms and flaws, such as clumsiness or insecurity, result in a strong response of adoration and protectiveness from the viewer. Moe characters may be considered sexy by viewers, though that is not a requirement per se. pool episode An episode playing at the pool, mostly in school, sometimes outside of it when the cast does not have a chance for a beach episode.
Usually used for fanservice purpose as it gives the staff the opportunity to draw the characters in swimsuits and raise the DVD sales.
The cheap version of the beach episode.
Other variants are the onsen episode and the sentou episode. reverse harem The reverse harem genre is the obvious counterpart to the regular harem genre, where the harem focuses on a single male being surrounded by several females, the reverse harem focuses on a single female surrounded by several males. reverse trap A girl who dresses in male clothing. rich guy - poor girl Popular plot device, where a pure-hearted financially impoverished female character has to endure many hardships, until she finally stumbles into a — unbeknownst to her — well off character, and usually falls in love. From then on her immediate troubles are over, though other problems may arise.
Example: A typical "Prince Charming" / Cinderella setting.
A more cynical interpretation: "I ain`t saying she`s a gold digger, but she ain`t messing with no broke bro either." self-parody The anime is a parody of itself.
I.e. the authors make fun of the genre they are portraying, and take the actions of their characters and story lightly. slow when it comes to love The main protagonists in this anime have a very hard time trying to express their feelings to each other. They simply will not finally confess their love.
In some cases this romance element is based on unrequited love, or an absurd amount of shyness. strong female lead The lead female character has a strong personality and plays a part that is not the typical damsel-in-distress role.
This is the exact opposite of the “damsel in distress” tag. twins Twin siblings featured in the cast. yaoi subtext Actions between two male characters that could be taken as or misinterpreted as being amorous in nature.
