Based on a manga by Kimura Tahiko serialised in Gangan Wing.
Nagasumi visits his grandmother near the sea during the summer. While visiting, he goes for a swim, and drowns right after entering the water. Fortunately for him he is saved by a young mermaid. Later as he tells the story to his family, a young girl named Sun appears at his home and begs Nagasumi to marry her.
She’s followed by two large thugs and they take both him and his parents to Sun's home under the sea. If that wasn’t strange enough, it turns out Sun's parents are mob bosses. Nagasumi is left with the choice of either death or marrying Sun. He chooses to marry a mermaid.
This would likely be that, except Sun's father and some members of the mob are not exactly thrilled to have Nagasumi courting Sun and are determined to bring an end to their relationship - or him. And there is also the matter of keeping it a secret that Sun is a mermaid.
Categories Action Action anime usually involve a fairly straightforward story of good guys versus bad guys, where most disputes are resolved by using physical force. It often contains a lot of shooting, explosions and fighting. Asia Asia is the world`s largest and most populous continent. Comedy Anime whose central struggle causes hilarious results. These stories are built upon funny characters, situations and events. A comedy anime is laced with humour and sets out to provoke laughter from the audience. Japanese humour can be a bit strange to westerners, so if you`re new to this type of humour, just bear with it; it`ll most likely grow on you if you`re a fan of other kinds of comedy. Coming of Age In the strict sense the Coming of age describes a young person`s transition from adolescence to adulthood. In anime the term is used in a more general sense where the protagonists have to face a challenge, make an important decision in their life, take on responsibility, or learn a lesson, and by overcoming these obstacles they reach a higher level of maturity. Contemporary Fantasy Magic and supernatural beings exist secretly in what is generally regarded as the real world. Such elements may have originated from another world. Stories where a modern-day character travels to an alternate fantasy world are not considered contemporary fantasy. Earth That big mud ball that most of us live on. Fantasy Magic and other supernatural forms are primary elements of plot, theme and/or setting. Distinguished from science fiction and horror by not involving scientific or macabre themes respectively, though the three genres can often overlap each other to some extent. Harem Harem anime is when three or more females that for some reason are in the presence of one male as a central plot element. Generally, both the girls` looks and personalities vary a lot, and most of them are interested in the one guy. Sometimes, none of the girls are really interested at first, so the protagonist has to build relationships with them. Ecchi pretty much can`t be avoided, and it`s typical to see the protagonist stamped as a pervert by some of the girls, whether he is one or not. A lot of harem anime were originally Visual Novels, since most Visual Novels revolve around controlling this one guy, trying to build a relationship with several girls. In a story where there is one female and several good looking males it`s a "reverse harem" or "male harem". Japan Last stronghold for humanity, if Tokyo falls, it`s all over. Tokyo tower will undoubtedly fall anyway. Mafia The Mafia is a secret crime group working in many parts of the world that was created in Italy more than 200 years ago. The mafia make money from crime. They make billions of dollars a year from such crimes as making and selling illegal drugs, money laundering, from stealing, gambling and prostitution. Middle School Also referred to as junior high school (or lower-secondary education; compulsory in Japan) covers the grades seven, eight, and nine. The students are typically twelve to fifteen years old. Anime with school setting centre on Middle School students when younger, possibly more naive and `innocent` (less worldly wise) characters are required. Original Work: Manga Manga is the lifeblood that drives the anime industry. Everything and its mother is based on manga. However! There are exceptions where the manga was not the basis for the anime. It`s common practice to make manga adaptations of many popular anime, there`s a manga based on Evangelion, and two (one shounen and one shoujo) based on each of Escaflowne and Mahou Tsukai Tai. Also it`s quite common to release manga and anime versions of a story in parallel, for instance Nadesico and Shoujo Kakumei Utena. There are also cases where an anime continues in a manga, or reverse, as in the case of Angel Beats! and Angel Beats: Heaven`s Door. Parody Anime that imitate other stories (can be from TV, film, books, historical events, ...) for comic effect by exaggerating the style and changing the content of the original. Also known as spoofs. It can also refer to when whole elements of one work are lifted out of their context and reused. Plot Continuity Consistency of the characteristics of persons, plot, objects, places and events seen by the viewer. A single linear focused plot is highly continuous. A truly random plot is highly discontinuous. Romance Romance describes a story that deals with love between two or more characters typically also having an optimistic ending. Romance is also a difficulty encountered when creating a harem. School Life Since a large part of the anime audience still takes part in school life or is visiting college, it is only natural to choose a setting the audience can identify with, be it elementary, middle, or high school. For the older viewers a college setting with more mature real-life problems is appropriate. And since clubs take up so much time in the lives of students, these are obviously also important. Shounen A style of anime and manga intended for boys, characterized by high-action, often humorous plots featuring male protagonists. The camaraderie between boys or men on sports teams, fighting squads, etc. is often emphasized. Unrealistically attractive female characters are also common (see fanservice), but are not a requirement. The art style of shounen also tends to be less flowery than that of shoujo. Slapstick Slapstick humour is generally recognized by lots of physical abuse, horseplay and practical jokes. Also often seen are impossible situations, using sounds to illustrate impossible stunts that aren`t shown on-screen and to create tension for audience anticipation. Stereotypes Then there is the question of the character set presentation. Is it completely original, or is it your usual stereotypical character cast. Both choices have their merit, for example it would not really make much sense to reinvent the wheel for a harem anime. Fans of that genre come to expect their favourite stereotype protagonists. Sudden Girlfriend Appearance Sudden Girlfriend Appearance anime involve a sudden change in the main character`s life where (s)he suddenly gets confronted with an individual (s)he`s sexually attracted to, the two of them inevitable becoming a couple. Super Deformed A caricature style often seen in anime when the character shows extreme emotions, like fear, anger, happiness, surprise, or shame. Seen as cute, as part of humorous comedy. The character`s face suddenly turns into a simplified version, the body will usually also deform into that of a small child (oversized head, short limbs, extra-large tears). Super Power Be it an ancient Greek Heracles, a cybernetic muscle-man, or a fourteen year-old girl in a mini-skirted sailor suit. As long as they have super powers, they`re in the show. Time: Present Somewhere between past and future Underworld The underworld we talk about here is not to be confused with the place where people are believed to go after they die, but the general term for organized crime. It is a shady world, unknown to most people, where illegal things like murder, smuggling, drug dealing and similar are happening daily. Groups known to be acting in this world are for example the mafia or the yakuza. Yakuza Yakuza, also known as the Japanese Mafia, refers to traditional organized crime groups in Japan and members thereof. They have a hierarchical structure, with the "oyabun", the family head, standing on top. They also have their own code, the "jingi", where loyalty and respect are a way of life. Yakuza members are identifiable for their, often full-body, tattoos and missing fingers, a result of the yubitsume ritual, which is a form of penance or apology. Tags awesome dad Features one or more of the characters having father`s which exceed certain criteria to the point of inspiring a sense of awe and wonder in the viewer, whether through their extremely relaxed and open-minded nature towards sexuality/romantic conquests (specifically in relation to their offspring), or their extreme levels of fighting spirit and sense of justice (again usually in relation to their offspring). awesome monkey A monkey - either as animal side-kick, or a human that looks like one - plays a central role as comic relief, and is kind of awesome, maybe. boobs in your face The protagonists face is pressed into a female`s cleavage. This may be accidental, or actually intended by the female character. cat Independent animal of the feline sort. Not to be confused with dogs. cosplay The act of dressing or disguising oneself as (but not limited to) a character, occupation, animal, or a combination of such things that are non relative to what would be considered natural characteristics of them.
Well known feminine cosplay examples consist of (but not nearly limited to) rare yet honorary or well respected occupations such as nurses, maids or shrine-priestesses. with the most portrayed animal crossover being the infamous cat-girl. Character cosplays consist primarily of characters from anime, manga, or video-games. creative censorship The TV station airing the anime does its best to remove most ecchi parts from the show, using various and original methods. Usually, an uncensored DVD is released later. However, sometimes the censorship is used intentionally to make a scene look more obscene than it actually is. dancing theme "It`s got a good beat and you can dance to it."
The opening and/or ending theme has some form of dancing in it. Feel free to join in. facial distortion The characters face are exaggerated into a misshape, deformed, and almost warped. Used as comedy element to express extreme mood swings.
Differing from "Super Deformed", here only the face changes to an extreme degree, not the whole body of the protagonist. first kiss The first kiss plays a role in this anime. Especially for the female cast this can be quite an important moment, so that stealing ones first kiss is serious for them. funny expressions The facial expressions of the characters may change so quickly or unexpectedly distorted that hilarity will ensue. great teacher The teacher in this anime is not your standard, dreadfully boring, run of the mill teacher, but in some way special, and possibly quite cool.
Example: The teacher is actually a cholerical, short-tempered, and violent Merman Yakuza Boss ("Seto no Hanayome"). hilarious The anime is outrageously funny. instant fan club A character is considered so awesome that not only do they have notable admirers, but their fans become organized in such a fashion to have a following that could only be guaranteed in real life by precise and long increments of paparazzi-like stalking.
If the character is sufficiently cool this may happen practically overnight (i.e., within a few episodes of them being introduced), although the subject of admiration typically has mixed feelings about the entire affair. Kansai-ben The Kansai-ben is a distinct group of related Japanese dialects found in the Kansai region of Japan. They are typified by the speech of Osaka, which is referred to specifically as Osaka-ben. It is characterized as being both more melodic and harsher by speakers of the standard language.
Note: Accent from the Kansai region of Japan, treated similarly to a southern accent in the US. land shark Mythical being - a shark, usually living in the ocean - that can take on human form on land.
Favourite saying: "Can I eat them?" mermaid A mermaid (half human, half fish) appears in the show. mini-girl A tiny female doll-like character appears in the show, height about 20cm. movie parody The anime parodies at least one movie, e.g. Rocky, King Kong, Titanic, Amazon Women on the Moon, Terminator, Blade Runner, Total Recall, etc. school excursion True for almost all anime with school setting, there will be a school excursion or field trip. Tokyo and Kyoto seem to be particularly popular as sightseeing destinations. This also is a good excuse to present the prefecture`s / citie`s specialities (food).
Potential for ecchi moments: Obviously the "boys" will get all sorts of ideas with the "girls" sleeping so close by in the hotel. school sports festival To show off the students in sports clothing — in ecchi anime the female students in particular — a sports festival is quite popular in your typical anime with school setting. Here the protagonists can show their skills in diverse athletic competitions.
Note: This festival may also, though very rarely, take place at a kindergarten or preschool. spacing out A comedy element: The character starts to daydream or fantasize about some topic. The typical complete lack of reality makes the spacing out funny. Especially when the protagonist mumbles to himself / herself and friends hear this. Promptly teasing the possibly lovestruck and very embarrassed protagonist. summer festival The summer festival is used to show off the female protagonists in traditional Japanese clothing — the yukata — a casual form of kimono.
The festivities include food stalls (cotton candy, candy apples, choco bananas, taiyaki), various games (scoop goldfishes), and a fireworks display. Terminator Parody element. Various references to the Terminator franchise. two-faced Pure. Innocent. Beautiful. They are often the type everyone looks up to... too bad she (or he) has a strong negative side hiding under that shiny shell of complexion perfection. under one roof For some flimsy reason the main protagonist (e.g. male in harem / female in reverse-harem) is living together with many other (female/male) characters under the same roof, i.e. apartment, house, or mansion.
