Based on the shounen manga Karin by Kagesaki Yuna serialised in Monthly Dragon Age.
Maaka Karin comes from a family of vampires living in Japan, but she is not a normal vampire. Vampires are normally supposed to drink the blood of their victims... but Karin suffers from a condition that causes her body to produce excessive amounts of blood. About once a month, she has to get rid of the excess blood by giving it to her "victims". But she somehow manages... and goes to school like everyone else her age.
Well, things are about to get more complicated: When a new student, Usui Kenta transfers into Karin's class, she starts producing unusually huge amounts of blood, almost as if in reaction to him. Worse, he happens upon Karin's... true nature...
Categories
Angst A feeling of general discomfort and uneasiness is present due to either trivial or more serious reasons, often accompanied by depression.
Warning: may contain copious amounts of brooding and sighing. Asia Asia is the world`s largest and most populous continent. Bishounen Young man whose beauty (and sexual appeal) transcends the boundary of gender or sexual orientation. Boing The sound breasts make when they bounce. Size may vary, but mainly involves larger breasts in tight or otherwise sexy clothing. Partial or complete exposure may occur, usually emphasizing the boing-effect as they come out. Not capable of bouncing means no boing. Comedy Anime whose central struggle causes hilarious results. These stories are built upon funny characters, situations and events. A comedy anime is laced with humour and sets out to provoke laughter from the audience.
Japanese humour can be a bit strange to westerners, so if you`re new to this type of humour, just bear with it; it`ll most likely grow on you if you`re a fan of other kinds of comedy. Coming of Age In the strict sense the Coming of age describes a young person`s transition from adolescence to adulthood. In anime the term is used in a more general sense where the protagonists have to face a challenge, make an important decision in their life, take on responsibility, or learn a lesson, and by overcoming these obstacles they reach a higher level of maturity. Contemporary Fantasy Magic and supernatural beings exist secretly in what is generally regarded as the real world. Such elements may have originated from another world. Stories where a modern-day character travels to an alternate fantasy world are not considered contemporary fantasy. Daily Life The antics of the protagonists do not take place in some exotic setting or time, but in everyday life. When not "at the job" this means getting up in the morning, making meals, house cleaning, going shopping or out to eat, visiting the bath house or spa, leisure activities in the spare time, etc. The time "on the job" for students is School Life, for others working in their profession. Daily Life is basically a synonym for everything normal, repetitive, and trivial happening to your average person. Earth That big mud ball that most of us live on. Ecchi Ecchi, or etchi (エッチ), is a common Japanese word meaning “indecent”, “lewd”, “frisky” or “sexy”, while its usage can be compared to the word “naughty”. The term is used when vague sexual content, such as skimpy clothing or nudity, is prominent. Fantasy Magic and other supernatural forms are primary elements of plot, theme and/or setting. Distinguished from science fiction and horror by not involving scientific or macabre themes respectively, though the three genres can often overlap each other to some extent. High School The upper-secondary education (not compulsory in Japan) covers the grades ten, eleven, and twelve. The students are typically fifteen to eighteen years old.
Anime centre on High School settings predominately: Plot/story-wise the coming of age is of interest - the students are almost adults (their bodies have matured, see ecchi anime) with more earnest, real-life problems. Japan Last stronghold for humanity, if Tokyo falls, it`s all over. Tokyo tower will undoubtedly fall anyway. Large Breasts Focus on larger than average breasts. Pretty common in anime. Usually involves adolescent girls or fully grown women. Love Polygon A love polygon refers to a romantic relationship involving n people. Although a love triangle is not limited to just heterosexual relationships, in anime, it usually deals with two females liking one male and vice versa. Original Work: Manga Manga is the lifeblood that drives the anime industry. Everything and its mother is based on manga. However! There are exceptions where the manga was not the basis for the anime.
It`s common practice to make manga adaptations of many popular anime, there`s a manga based on Evangelion, and two (one shounen and one shoujo) based on each of Escaflowne and Mahou Tsukai Tai. Also it`s quite common to release manga and anime versions of a story in parallel, for instance Nadesico and Shoujo Kakumei Utena. There are also cases where an anime continues in a manga, or reverse, as in the case of Angel Beats! and Angel Beats: Heaven`s Door. Parody Anime that imitate other stories (can be from TV, film, books, historical events, ...) for comic effect by exaggerating the style and changing the content of the original. Also known as spoofs. It can also refer to when whole elements of one work are lifted out of their context and reused. Plot Continuity Consistency of the characteristics of persons, plot, objects, places and events seen by the viewer.
A single linear focused plot is highly continuous.
A truly random plot is highly discontinuous. Romance Romance describes a story that deals with love between two or more characters typically also having an optimistic ending. Romance is also a difficulty encountered when creating a harem. School Life Since a large part of the anime audience still takes part in school life or is visiting college, it is only natural to choose a setting the audience can identify with, be it elementary, middle, or high school. For the older viewers a college setting with more mature real-life problems is appropriate. And since clubs take up so much time in the lives of students, these are obviously also important. Shounen A style of anime and manga intended for boys, characterized by high-action, often humorous plots featuring male protagonists. The camaraderie between boys or men on sports teams, fighting squads, etc. is often emphasized. Unrealistically attractive female characters are also common (see fanservice), but are not a requirement. The art style of shounen also tends to be less flowery than that of shoujo. Time: Present Somewhere between past and future Tragedy Tragedy is a form of drama characterized by seriousness and dignity, usually involving a conflict between a character and some higher power, such as the law, the gods, fate, or society. Vampires A super-human species, with long fangs used to penetrate the tender neck of young females, to drink blood. Violence Physical force against self or other, compelling action against one`s will on pain of being hurt.

anti-vampire no description set yet awesome grandma no description set yet awesome mom Features one or more of the characters having mother`s which exceed certain criteria to the point of inspiring a sense of awe and wonder in the viewer, whether through their extremely relaxed and open-minded nature towards sexuality/romantic conquests (specifically in relation to their offspring), or their extreme levels of fighting spirit and sense of justice (again usually in relation to their offspring). breast fondling Part of the slapstick comedy in ecchi anime between female characters. E.g. a girl envious of another girl`s bust size may tease the latter via fondling. Usually playful and mischievous, not sexual.
Alas, now the tag can also imply "boob grabbing", where a male character will either accidentally or intentionally touch the breasts of a female. The former is a comedy element, as in "accidental infringement", the latter can be interpreted as a form of harassment. Christmas This anime is about Christmas or has an episode relating to Christmas, often including the decoration of the Christmas tree, the shopping for and the handing out of presents, and an extra special opulent dinner (a Christmas party). No Christmas is complete without the falling of snow — for those romantic moments. cute character At least one of the characters in the anime - probably female - can be termed "cute". doll no description set yet emoticons Used in slapstick comedy: Very large pictograms are placed near the head of the protagonists to better convey their current emotional state.
Examples: A huge sweat drop shows that the character is in some kind of embarrassing pinch (i.e. getting caught while badmouthing someone, or not knowing how to react to an obvious "stupidity" caused by a friend). Another emoticon looks hash-like (#), it represents anger or annoyance. familiar no description set yet furo scene Furo (polite: Ofuro) is Japanese for bath, specifically a type of bath which originated as a short, steep-sided wooden bathtub. Baths of this type are found all over Japan in houses, apartments and traditional Japanese inns (Ryokans).
Furo are part of the Japanese ritual of bathing, not used for washing but for relaxing and warming oneself. Washing is carried out separately outside the furo, and only when completely clean does the bather enter the water. Generally Japanese bathrooms are small, so the bathroom is set up much like a walk-in shower area but containing the ofuro.
The cheapest and shortest way to show naked skin on TV, at least as much as allowed. It usually only takes up few minutes at most and as such it gives the staff the opportunity to draw the characters in the nude and raise the DVD sales while still maintaining a "non-filler" episode.
Compare to the big brothers sentou episode and onsen episode. hand puppet no description set yet hilarious The anime is outrageously funny. indirect kiss Comedy element: Especially in a school setting the character who has fallen for a fellow student, but has not yet confessed his/her love, will be desperate for any sign of "closeness".
The indirect kiss: Anything the adored person touches with his/her lips — e.g. a used glass of lemonade, some half-eaten food, a half-emptied can of soda — the love struck will want to touch with her/his own lips. intact family The main character`s family is a so-called "nuclear family". Wherein both parents are alive and present in his or her life. This is actually relatively rare for anime, where "parental abandonment" is the norm. klutz As part of the slapstick comedy in anime there often is a character (usually female), who is particularly clumsy, i.e. tripping, bumping into objects, or dropping things. This lack of physical coordination is thought of as endearing. lots of blood This anime contains a fair amount of bloody scenes. nosebleed girl Comedy element: One of the female characters — often in a school setting — will show an excessive emotional reaction to something. This form of “excitement” will make her nose bleed.
Examples: Girl sees a bishounen, or when it comes to shoujo ai, sees another girl (bishoujo) in a daring pose.
Usually, boys will show such a reaction when e.g. seeing a pretty girl. In this case the reverse situation is quite rare by comparison. pool episode An episode playing at the pool, mostly in school, sometimes outside of it when the cast does not have a chance for a beach episode.
Usually used for fanservice purpose as it gives the staff the opportunity to draw the characters in swimsuits and raise the DVD sales.
The cheap version of the beach episode.
Other variants are the onsen episode and the sentou episode. school festival The obligatory school festival (or cultural fair) with cosplay cafe, haunted house, theatre performance, and food booths can not be missing in any school setting.
For good measure there may also be an athletics or sports festival in this anime. unfoundedly feared character Due to some strange misunderstanding, or some other unfounded reason the character in the anime is feared by his contemporaries.
Example: A male student with an "evil eye" is mistaken for a delinquent, and thus feared by the students in his class. vampire girl At least one of the female characters is a vampire, a mythological or folkloric un-dead creature able to suck human blood, shapeshift into a bat (sometimes also into a wolf or some fog), and with a strong fear of garlic, flowing water, and sunlight (believed to be deadly for vampires), and holy water and holy symbols.
A human bitten or even scratched by a vampire is typically doomed to die (as if poisoned) and becomes a vampire after death (sometimes becomes a ghoul, a zombie, or some other un-dead, depends on the setting), under the command of the vampire master.
Vampires are granted extra-human strength and senses. They also enjoy an infinite lifespan (until the body is burnt by sunlight, or by fire, or stabbed by some silver weapon, or shot by a silver bullet, or stabbed by an aspen stake).
