Action Action anime usually involve a fairly straightforward story of good guys versus bad guys, where most disputes are resolved by using physical force. It often contains a lot of shooting, explosions and fighting. Aliens An extraterrestrial life-form, possibly intelligent and/or extremely threatening. Aliens come in all shapes and sizes: They may be ethereal beings as in "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within", quite humanoid as most of the female space-faring cast in "Tenchi Muyou! GXP", or totally incomprehensible as in "Gantz". Not the sky is the limit, but the anime author`s imagination. Alternative Present Anime that fit in the alternative present category usually have technology and society that is very similar to ours, but with differences in both, history and culture, which sometimes are blatantly obvious, but sometimes harder to place; this one can at times be very subjective. Androids Androids are robots created to look like humans. A very famous example is Data from Star Trek, but they need not be as human-like as him. Asia Asia is the world`s largest and most populous continent. Comedy Anime whose central struggle causes hilarious results. These stories are built upon funny characters, situations and events. A comedy anime is laced with humour and sets out to provoke laughter from the audience.
Japanese humour can be a bit strange to westerners, so if you`re new to this type of humour, just bear with it; it`ll most likely grow on you if you`re a fan of other kinds of comedy. Coming of Age In the strict sense the Coming of age describes a young person`s transition from adolescence to adulthood. In anime the term is used in a more general sense where the protagonists have to face a challenge, make an important decision in their life, take on responsibility, or learn a lesson, and by overcoming these obstacles they reach a higher level of maturity. Delinquents Every school has them, but not all anime with school setting make delinquents a central topic. There are several versions of these delinquents, though some are grounded on a misunderstanding:
* The student with a really bad image and attitude, based on his real criminal actions outside of the school and is even feared by teachers.
* The primitive "class bully" that pushes around ("clobbers") his classmates for no apparent reason, possibly extorting lunch money.
* The student with an sinister complexion or "evil eye", but is actually a "good" student (unfoundedly feared character).
* The rebellious student, who does not care for studying, but is otherwise docile. Called a "delinquent" as a joke. Earth That big mud ball that most of us live on. Elementary School The primary education (compulsory in Japan) covers the first six grades. The students are typically six to twelve years old.
The small size and energetic / playful antics of the young students make the comedic appeal and cuteness of super deformed "older" characters superfluous. Hilarity ensues when seemingly innocent children comment on the worlds troubles in a sarcastic adult way. Huge potential for heart-warming anime! Japan Last stronghold for humanity, if Tokyo falls, it`s all over. Tokyo tower will undoubtedly fall anyway. Mecha Mecha in Japanese basically means mechanical things; everything from an electric whisk or a car to a spaceship or a robot. Here however we limit it to the more exotic things usually referred to as mecha anime: robots, whether controlled by a human or not, and their ilk. Original Work: New Not based on anything, the story is a new work, usually made up by the people involved in creating the anime. Generally if an original work (原作) credit is given, it will be to the studio, or director, or other members of the production team. Parody Anime that imitate other stories (can be from TV, film, books, historical events, ...) for comic effect by exaggerating the style and changing the content of the original. Also known as spoofs. It can also refer to when whole elements of one work are lifted out of their context and reused. Romance Romance describes a story that deals with love between two or more characters typically also having an optimistic ending. Romance is also a difficulty encountered when creating a harem. School Life Since a large part of the anime audience still takes part in school life or is visiting college, it is only natural to choose a setting the audience can identify with, be it elementary, middle, or high school. For the older viewers a college setting with more mature real-life problems is appropriate. And since clubs take up so much time in the lives of students, these are obviously also important. SciFi Science fiction stories usually focus on how situations could be different in the future when we are more technologically advanced; due to either our own achievements or having met with other civilizations whom we have learned from. Seinen A subset of anime or manga that is generally targeted at a 18 - 25 year old male audience, but the audience can be much older with some manga aimed at businessmen well into their 40s. Slapstick Slapstick humour is generally recognized by lots of physical abuse, horseplay and practical jokes. Also often seen are impossible situations, using sounds to illustrate impossible stunts that aren`t shown on-screen and to create tension for audience anticipation. Time: Present Somewhere between past and future Twisted Twisted indicates more than one abrupt change in plot or story. This derivation from strict linear storytelling usually makes these anime hard to follow, and at times even very confusing when several parallel plots intertwine.

anything can be awesome Sometimes normal just doesn`t cut it, you need to make it awesome, no matter how mundane it is.
Let`s throw in some gripping orchestral music, lighting changes, different camera angles, something! Don`t write like a man, write like an Evil Overlord! Exaggerate your expressions and gestures, speak with excessive intonation, and if all else fails, throw in some close-ups, slow motion, and Ominous Latin Chanting! With practice, even you can turn something like eating chips into an epic battle of light and dark. awesome animation Describes the style of an animation production that deems itself respectfully noteworthy for its impressive uniqueness of appearance and attention, emphasis, or exaggeration to all or specific characteristics, constructions and details that make it so recognizable. baseball episode The anime does not have baseball as a main setting, but for some reason one or more episodes show the protagonists playing baseball. boy meets girl A classical type of plot in story writing, where the story begins with a boy meeting a girl leading to romantic development between the two. More often than not the boy loses the girl later on and has to find her again. breaking the fourth wall A situation where the boundary between fictional characters and the audience is broken. A common case where the fourth wall is broken is when a character reveals his or her awareness of the audience. Or when he or she mentions that they have not been in an episode and are now back again. bullet time Bullet Time refers to a simulation of variable speed (i.e. slow motion, time-lapse…) and is characterized both by its extreme transformation of time and space to show normally imperceptible and un-filmable events, such as flying bullets.
Most infamous scene using that technique, Neo dodging bullets in The Matrix film. bunny costume A costume that resembles a rabbit of which there are two main types. In anime usually encountered is the Playboy Bunny variant. epic Epic is all about scale. Whether it is the vastness of the anime’s universe, the grandeur of the protagonist’s heroic journey, or the anime’s over-the-top, pulse-pounding visual style — when the anime becomes larger than life and draws the viewer in with an overwhelming sense of awe, it can be described simply as Epic. experimental animation This anime uses distinct, alternative animation - much unlike other contemporary anime - either throughout or in individual episodes/sequences. extreme wackiness The anime is not just a bit on the hysterical side, it is totally whacked out and over the top. A large amount of quick dialogues and much slapstick violence move the plot forward at a reckless pace.
All this can be hilarious, but may also make the anime hard to follow and potentially annoying after some time. eyebrows no description set yet fast-paced story no description set yet general lack of common sense Often a desired backdrop to many anime-comedy series, where most happenings are fast paced and senseless for the pure comical enjoyment of viewers.
The lacking of common sense describes a conflicting existence to which some or many people don`t share the majority`s general knowledge of all things, all possible actions and all the logical results of those actions.
In spite of a character`s intelligence (although senselessness may suggest some may be lacking average knowledge), most instances receive illogical results or the events themselves are illogical, therefore the events make just as little sense as the results to follow. great directing no description set yet great ED The ending is pretty well made. It`s nicely presented, artistically and conceptually. It`s usually follow by a catchy song/tune, but it isn`t a norm.
It portrays the series theme perfectly, in other words, it doesn`t feel out of place. great soundtrack The anime soundtrack is noteworthy. over the top Both the characters and the story in this anime are completely over the top. randomness The anime does not follow a predictable storyline. New, strange, obscure, or otherwise unexpected story elements are introduced at a whim. sexual references Dialogue spoken by characters revolves around sexual topics. some weird shit goin` on WTF? strong female lead The lead female character has a strong personality and plays a part that is not the typical damsel-in-distress role.
This is the exact opposite of the “damsel in distress” tag. surreal Refers to things or occurrences that are generally bizarre or dreamlike, with the relentless capability of replacing reality through the eyes of the beholder. Surrealism is boundless, limited only by thought itself. symbolism Representation of a more complex concept by a simple thing. Like a red flower for love or a flag for a nation. unreal no description set yet Vespa An Italian line of scooters manufactured by Piaggio.
